In the finals the Lightning girls played a very entertaining game, with an effective passing game to win 3 - 0 over the Georgetown Eagles.

Although the Lightning team dominated the game, they were unable to get the ball past the Aurora keeper. But with 2 minutes left in overtime, the Lighting team finally got a goal off of a beautiful corner kick to caputre the CAN-AM Cup. The Aurora girls were heartbroken and in tears after the game, but unfortunately there has to be a winner and there has to be a loser. After speaking with one of the Aurora coaches, his comment was "good teams find a way to get it done", which is what happened in Aurora.

Lightning U9-1 Finalists - Win battle but Lose War
Ajax tourn
The Ajax United U9-1 team entered the Ajax Soccer Club Tournament on July 17 - 18. During the round of Robin they faced the #1 team from York Region, Newmarket Hurricanes and defeated them 3 - 0. They went on to to defeat Oshawa Kicks 3 - 0 and then finished the day by defeating Peterborough 9 - 0. After scoring 15 goals and allowing none, the Lightning team advanced to the semi finals against BRAMS UNITED 'A', a team which has not lost a game in over 1 year.

The Lightning girls were facing a tough battle in the semi-final game as BRAMS UNITED was determined to defend their crown from last year. Well it was a very exciting game as Brampton scored early to take a 1 - 0 lead. But the Lightning girls battled hard and fought back to win 2 - 1, with goals by Madeline Iozzi and Nadia Ben Hamoud.

The Lightning girls advanced to the finals against Waterloo, another team that seem to have fate on their side. The Lighting girls outplayed them for the most part with the play being in Waterloo's end for approximately 75% of the game. Waterloo had 2 shots on net,
one of them was an unlucky break for the Lightning team, as the ball got by our goalie. The Lightning girls continued to fight back, created several opportunities, but just could'nt get one in the back of the net, and after 40 minutes of play time had run out and Waterloo had handed the Lightning team their first defeat to a U9 team in the 2004 season. But that's the way it goes sometimes.

In the end the Lightning girls had won the battle against Brampton, but lost the war by not being able to take home the championship.

Nevertheless there was nothing to feel ashamed about.
So keep the hard work up Lightning girls.

Ajax United U9-2 Semi Finalists at West Rouge Tournament
The Ajax United Lightning U9-2 put in outstanding effort on Saturday at the West Rouge Tournament. They won their division and advanced to the Semi finals against North Mississagua. The Lightning team a late entry in the tournament were down to 9 players on Sunday.
North Mississauga scored the first 2 goals and although the Lightning girls battled back with one goal, they continued to apply trememdous pressure on the panthers defence, but in the end it wasn't enough as the Lightning girls had to settle for semi-finalists.

The following were the scores:

Round of Robin:
Lightning 6       Newmarket Grypons 0
Lightning 3       Pickering         0
Lightning 11       West Rouge       0

Semi - Finals:
Lightning 1       North Mississauga 2

Good work girls!!!!

Lightning U9-1 Roll over the West to Win Tournament
The Ajax United Lightning girls travelled to the quiet town of Caledon East to particpate in the Caledon tournament. There were several big club teams participating which the Lightning girls had not faced in 2004, including,  Oakville,  Mississauga,  Erin Mills and  North Mississauga.

After being placed in a tough group with the following teams:
 Erin Mills
The Lighting girls were determined to over-come the heart-breaking loss a week ago.
They opened their first game against North Mississauga by scoring in the first minute and never looked back, cruising to a 12 - 0 victory over North Mississauga.

In their second game they faced a big and physical Erin Mills Eagles. The Eagles tried to use their size and aggressiveness to defeat the Lighting team, but good ball movement and decision making was too much for the Erin Mills team to handle, with the Lightning girls dominating and getting a 4-0 victory.
On Sunday, the Lightning team returned to face an energetic Cambridge team, unfortunately the energy could'nt keep up with the Lightning fire power and stellar defence, as the Lighting girls got the win with an 11 - 0 score.

The next game was against Oakville Blast from the biggest soccer club in Ontario and who were also boasting 2 tournament championships in 2004. Oakville was watching the Lightning team very closely at the tournament and thought they had the Lightning girls figured out. The Oakville parents with some arrogance thought they could handle the Lightning attack and penetrate the Lightning defence ??? The Lightning girls dominated the game for the first 11 minutes but could'nt find the back of the net. Eventually the Lightning girls errupted for 2 quick goals and did'nt look back as they defeated Oakville 5 - 0.
With a 4-0 record in the round of robin, the Lightning girls advanced to the final against BRAMS. The day belonged to Ajax as they went on to win 14 - 0 and win the tournament. The following is a summary of scores:
 Lightning 12       North Mississauga 0
 Lightning  4        Erin Mills               0
 Lightning 11       Cambridge            0
Lightning   5        Oakville                0

Lightning 14 Brams 0

Congratulations Lightning girls !!!!!! A special thanks to all the parents, families and friends for their continued support and encouragement throughout the tournament!!!!

CANADA’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM IS ON A MISSION… To win the most important women’s soccer tournament on the planet – the Women’s World Cup. But history is against them. In 75 years of international soccer, no Canadian team men or women, has ever won a single World Cup match. Filmed across Canada and the United States over a six month period, IT’S A GREAT GAME follows the team on and off the field as they gear up for the big tournament.

Part road story, part human drama, the documentary also delves into the lives of several of the players exposing the often tough realities that come with their soccer dreams… from bruising injuries and long hours training to their disjointed family lives and lost teenage years.

Finally at the World Cup, the documents drama and suspense comes to head as the girls play their hearts out in pursuit of gold, making Canadian soccer history in the process.
