27th Annual Mississauga International Tournament - Thunder Take Home the 'FALCON'!!!

The Thunder's opening tournament of the 2010 season was the Mississauga International on May 22nd-24th and it will not soon be forgotten!  The U13 division included 11 teams, with the Thunder playing in a pool with Monteiul Devils (QC), the Erin Mills Eagles and the host Mississauga Falcons A.  Despite playing in arguably the toughest pool, the thunder came out on top of their pool with a 5-0 win over Monteiul, 3-1 win over Mississauga, and a 0-0 tie with Erin Mills.

In the semi-final, the Thunder had a re-match against the Lakeshore team from Quebec who beat the Thunder in last year's tournament.  This game had a lot in common to last year, however, as the saying goes “Cooler heads shall prevail”, and the Thunder did just that against a very physical Quebec team. The girls played extremely well, remained focused, used there own team strengths and still managed to keep their cool with a positive outcome winning 3-1.

In the final, the Thunder were matched up against a big strong North Mississauga Panthers team.  The Panthers showed their strength early as they dominated the beginning of the game and scored the first goal.  However, as was evident throughout the weekend, this Thunder team does not quit until the final whistle and this game was no exception.  Despite several injured players, the Thunder continued to battle, tied the game and continued to press to the end.  However, these evenly matched teams would finish a highly entertaining game with a tie resulting in the need for a 5 player shoot-out.  The teams traded goals but also had some shots miss the net and saved.  After 5 shooters it was still tied and the game required an extra shooter where the Thunder scored but the Panther shot was stopped by the keeper resulting in the Ajax Thunder taking home the coveted 'FALCON'!

A storybook start to the 2010 season as the 26th ranked Thunder won the tournament over the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 19th & 22nd ranked Ontario teams (see 2009 Final TERRA Power Rankings), along with one of the top teams from Quebec.  The Ajax Thunder proved they will compete with any team!

On September 13th, the lights went out (figuratively & literally) on another season of Ajax Thunder soccer.  As the team walked off the field arm in arm, you could barely make out their faces as they had played the final minutes of the game in near darkness.  However, they held on to a 2-1 lead to capture an impressive 2nd place finish in the U13 Level 3 division.  This is truly a remarkable accomplishment given this was their first season in Level 3 after being  promoted at the end of last year.

The season started on a high by winning "The Falcon" in the Mississauga International Tournament in May against some strong competition. The league play then commenced and the Thunder went 9 games undefeated in Level 3 play to start the season.  They then travelled to the USA and returned with the Championship from the Greece Cobras Tournament in Rochester NY.  In the Ontario Cup they won the Preliminary Round but were defeated in the Quarter-Finals.  The Thunder then pushed hard to the end of the season and finished with a 2nd place finish in Level 3, with a league record of 10 wins, 3 losses and 3 tiesAs a result, the primary goal of the season was reached as the Thunder were promoted to the elite U14 OYSL for the 2011 season.  If that was not enough, throughout the season the Thunder remained in the top 4 of the TERRA Power Rankings, including as of the September 5th release.

In all 33 games this season, the Thunder finished with a record of 23 wins, 5 losses, 5 ties, 102 goals for, and 36 goals against.  An incredible journey yet again as it seems this team always reaches, and in many cases exceeds, the season goals put forth by the coach.  Congratulations to the girls and staff!  Thanks to all who participated in making this season a success both on and off the field, but primarily Coach Mario and Manager Roxanne for their leadership and dedication!!!

Some final words from Coach Mario.....

I'd like to congratulate all the girls on a very successful season. The girls started the year off with a bang, made some noise around the league early, continued their success until the very end, and never looked back. The end result is a second place finish as runners up in the CGSL L3 division and a well deserved promotion into the elite OYSL for next season. Wow, what an accomplishment over a two year span after finishing first in CGSL L4P play in only the previous year. Not sure any other team has ever done this before. I am very proud of all the girls and their commitment and dedication to this team over the course of the season.   "We came, we saw, we conquered!"
