26th Mississauga International Tournament

The Thunder opened the 2009 season at the Mississauga International Tournament on May 16-18.  The Thunder played preliminary round matches versus the North Mississauga Panthers, Lakeshore (Quebec) and the NorWest Knockouts.  Click here for the tournament details, including results.

Game 1 vs North Mississauga -  The Thunder came out in the first game and started slow, but still managed to get the first goal.  After the first half the score was 2-2 and everyone knew the next goal would be crucial.  Unfortately, it was not a Thunder goal and the Panthers would add to their lead, ending up winning 4-2.  The girls controlled the play at times, but not consistently to get the win.

Game 2 vs Lakeshore (Quebec) - The battle of Ontario vs Quebec was a tough loss as the Quebec team was definitely a team we could beat.  The Thunder played well but some 'unlucky' plays resulted in the Thunder being down early and they could not overcome the deficit with the game ending in a 4-1 win for Quebec.

Game 3 vs NorWest -  Having no chance to advance, the Thunder played this one for pure fun and pride.  The result was a 6-0 win to finish the tournament.

Bring on the regular season and our next tournament in Unionville!!

Unionville-Milliken Challenge Cup - Finalists!!!
Unionville-Milliken Logo

The 2nd Thunder tournament of the season, the Unionville-Milliken Challenge Cup, was held on June 6/7th.  The U12 division had five teams and each team played 4 games on Saturday to decide which two teams will advance to the final on Sunday.  See the tournament website for further details, including all the results.

Game 1 vs North Mississauga - The Thunder started the tournament strong and played a solid game.  They outshot their opponent by a large margin, but could only net one goal.  However, that's all they would need as they win the opener 1-0.

Game 2 vs Unionville-Milliken White - A great display of passing in this game as the Thunder easily won 5-0.

Game 3 vs Unionville-Milliken Red - As it turns out, this game was a preview of the final tomorrow as these teams will advance.  U-M scored first, but the Thunder pressed hard and tied it up for a 1-1 final.

Game 4 vs Brams United - The best offensive performance of the tournament so far resulted in a 7-0 win.  Well done girls on finishing the preliminary round undefeated!

Final vs Unionville-Milliken Red - After a tie in preliminary round play between these two teams, the expectations were high for an entertaining final.  Well, the teams did not disappoint as this was a back & forth battle from start to finish.  There was a great display of skill, but neither team could score and it appeared the game would go into penalty kicks.  However, with mere seconds remaining in the game the Strikers scored.  A heart-breaking defeat, but the Thunder played well and went away holding their head high knowing they could easily been on the winning end.

Congrat's to the players and staff on finishing as finalists!  Thanks to Unionville-Milliken for hosting a good tournament and congratulations on the win.

Heart of York Summer Classic Tournament - Thunder are CHAMPIONS (again)!!!
Heart of York Logo

The Heart of York Summer Classic Tournament was held in Newmarket on Aug 8th & 9th.  There were 12 teams in the U12 division.  The Thunder played in a pool with Aurora, Lake Simcoe and Toronto High Park.  See the tournament website for all the details, including the scores but the following is our game summary:

Game 1 vs Aurora - At the start it appeared the game may be competitive, but then the Thunder picked up their play.  After numerous shots, the Thunder finally found the back of the net and were winning 1-0 after the first half.  Despite many more chances, in the end the Thunder settled for the one goal and the win.

Game 2 vs Lake Simcoe - A similar game to Game 1, but the Thunder were able to net a few more goals.  The final was 4-0.

Game 3 vs Toronto High Park - A new day brings new challenges....needing a win to ensure they would advance, you could cut the tension (and air!) with a knife.  You could see why Toronto High Park was undefeated in league play this season as they put up a good fight against the Thunder.  However, the Thunder would hang on to a one goal lead to advance to the semi-finals!!  An entertaining game filled with excitement, drama and controversy!

Semi-Final vs South Simcoe - Another big win versus the Simcoe teams....Thunder took this one easily 6-0 giving them a berth in the final.

Final vs Toronto Eagles - The final started with a slow pace, but in the end turned into another entertaining game.  The Thunder scored the only goal and were once again crowned tournament champions!!

Despite some threatening weather, the tournament was enjoyable and well organized.  Thanks to Newmarket for hosting.  Congratulations to the players and coaches....a great display of team play throughout the weekend.

CGSL Cup Champions - The Icing on a Very Successful Season!!!
2009 CGSL Cup Champions

After winning the League Championship, the Thunder went into the Cup Championship Weekend of the 2009 season looking for the 'Double Crown'.  The Thunder played the Cup semi-final versus Etobicoke and with a convincing 7-0 win earned a berth in the Cup final.  Knowing they were playing Barrie, one of only 2 teams to beat the Thunder in league play, the Thunder had to bring their best game.  Well they did not disappoint and ended up winning 3-1.   A great accomplishment to put the icing on a great season!!!

Congratulations to the players and team staff on a season filled with success and enjoyment!!  The many, many hours dedicated to the development of the team over the past winter, spring and summer clearly paid off.  On behalf of the parents, our thanks to Mario, Norm, Roxanne and Tanja.  Thanks also to all the others who contributed in many different ways, but especially Margot for her efforts leading our fundraising.

For our final words of the 2009 season, here is Coach Mario.....

Hello everyone,

First of all, I would like to congratulate the girls this past weekend in winning the CGSL league cup. They played great in both games Saturday and Sunday and were very deserving of the win.

Just a quick recap for the season:
  • CGSL U12L4P League Champions
  • CGSL U12L4P League Cup Champions
  • Unionville Tournament Finalists
  • Greece Cobra Tournament Champions
  • Newmarket HOY Tournament Champions
  • Promoted to CGSL U13 Level 3 (top division) for next season
This has been a very successful season for the team and they whole heartedly deserved it. They worked very hard all year with 3 practices and 1 game per week, 4 tournaments and a full week of soccer camp to boot...not to mention goalie camps all summer for both keepers. It was a tough schedule but paid great dividends as the outcome was better than expected. I want to thank all of you for your patience and dedication to this team as it would not have been successful without your support.

Having said that, the regular season has come to an end and we must begin our journey in moving forward for next season. We look forward to having the girls out for our 2010 tryouts.

Thanks again,

Coach Mario
