Oshawa Kicks Spring Classic Tournament - Thunder Finalists for 2nd Year in a Row
Oshawa Kicks
The Oshawa Kicks Frank Sobil Spring Classic Tournament was held May 5th & 6th, with the Thunder competing for the championship versus 7 other teams.  The Thunder played round robin action in the 'B' division which included the Richmond Hill Raiders, Oshawa Kicks Synergy and the Oshawa Turul.  The final results can be found on the tournament website.

The Thunder started the first tournament of the year slowly, with a defeat by Richmond Hill.  Richmond Hill got up early in this one with two goals and held on with the Thunder getting stronger as the game went on.  The Thunder pressed hard but were unable to find the back of net.  With the Thunder continuing to play stronger as the tournament progressed, games 2 and 3 resulted in two wins and clinched their berth in the semi-final.

With memories of last year's Oshawa tournament when the Kicks defeated the Thunder in the final in everyone's minds, the Thunder hit the field for the semi-final versus the Oshawa Kicks Fury.  A great battle was won on the field as the Thunder returned the favour to the host team by defeating them 1-0.  This win allowed the Thunder to go to the 'big show'.

The Thunder anxiously awaited the start of the final as they watched Glen Shields Sun Devils defeat Richmond Hill in a shoot out in the other semi.  Obviously still pumped from the shoot out victory, Glen Shields came out and played a great game versus the Thunder.  Glen Shields proved too tough for the Thunder on this occasion as they went on to win 3-1.

The Thunder congratulate Glen Shields on the championship win, but look forward to a rematch possibility in a future tourmament.  All in all an impressive weekend of soccer for the Thunder... a great start to the 2007 season.  Thanks to Oshawa Kicks for a great tournament.

Mississauga International Tournament - Just Short of Semi-Finals
Mississauga Falcons Logo
The Mississauga International Tournament was held on May 19-21 and the scores are available here.  There were eight teams divided into two pools in the U10 girls division. The Thunder were in a pool with the Burlington Flames, West End Wildcats and the Whitby Attack.

The Inside Soccer tournament and camp guide 2007 April issue rated this tournament as the top club tournament in Ontario last summer. Ratings include: level of competition, number of games, fees, schedule, referee quality, communication, field conditions and accommodations.

The Thunder did not start the tournament versus Burlington the way they had hoped as they quickly got behind by two goals.  There was no quitting as they battled back to tie the game.  However, Burlington added a third to take the win.

Now in a must win situation, the Thunder controlled the play versus the West End Wildcats, but could only net two goals...however enough for the win (2-0).  This set up a deciding game versus the Whitby Attack as a win by either team and that team advanced to the semi-final.  Unfortunately, despite some outstanding goalkeeping by Emily and a great effort by all players, the Attack edged out the Thunder by a score of 1-0, ending the tournament for the Thunder.

Waterloo Tournament - Thunder Defeated in Shootout in Quarter Finals

The Waterloo Tournament was held on June 16 & 17 with the Thunder competing against five other teams in the Rowe Division of the 14 team U10 group.  The Thunder finished preliminary round play with two ties against Newmarket and Niagara Falls.  This set up the quarter final match versus the North Toronto Nitros.  The Thunder led for the majority of the game but the Nitros scored late to tie the game.  After two 5 minute overtime periods, the game was still 1-1.  This set up a shootout where the Thunder suffered an agonizing loss, with the Nitros scoring three times and the Thunder only once after four shooters, resulting in an early departure from the tournament for the Thunder.  The final results can be found here.

CESL Cup - Championship Weekend Ends Early as Hornets Sting Thunder in OT

The Thunder played their first game of the 2007 CESL Cup tournament on Tuesday July 3rd versus the East York Fire.  The game turned out to be a tight contest as both teams battled hard, with the Thunder coming out on top 1-0.  This was the preliminary round game which qualified the Thunder to compete against the Ajax Hornets in the quarter-finals of the Cup tournament on Saturday August 25th.  The two closely matched teams played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time.  In the second half of overtime, the Hornets netted a goal to end the Thunder's run for the 2007 CESL Cup.  Unfortunately, the Hornets went on to lose in overtime of the semi-final, so both Ajax Soccer Club teams were eliminated.  Congratulations to both teams for their showing in this year's Cup tournament.  Click here for the game results.

Oakville Tournament - Thunder Run Halted in Semi's

The Oakville Regional Select/All-Star Tournament held August 18/19 started with the Thunder winning two games and tying one in round robin play.  The one tie was against the Bram's United Select team, which is arguably the best team in the province having not lost a game this season!  Goal differential led to the Bram's team taking first in the pool with the Thunder finishing second. This set up the semi-final match against our very own Ajax Hornets, meaning one of the Ajax teams was guaranteed to be in the final. Unfortunately, the Thunder could not hold off a strong first half attack by the Hornets who netted 3 goals.  The second half showed promise with a goal off a corner kick, but the Thunder could not generate any more goals, ending the semi-final. The complete results are available here.

Thunder CESL East Division Finalists

The 2007 season ended for the Thunder on September 10th when they played their final league game verus the Ajax Hornets.  This game ended up being the deciding game for second place in the CESL East Division.  The Thunder played a strong game and came out on top 2-0.  Although the Hornets and Thunder finished with the same number of points, the 2nd place finish went to the Thunder given their better record in head to head action.  As a result, the Thunder received a trophy for their league play for the 3rd year in a row.  In the words of coach Mario..." Congratulations to all the girls on a a fantastic season, especially in the second half."

Thanks to all the players, team staff and parents for another enjoyable season of Thunder soccer!!
