Oshawa Kicks Tournament - Finalists By A Goal
Oshawa Kicks
The Oshawa Kicks tournament is now complete and the Thunder battled hard but came up on the short by a goal in the championship final versus the host team. The games were as follows:

Game 1 vs. Oshawa Turul - Well, our first official game of the season started out with a strange deflection goal against.  However, the Thunder bounced back with a goal of their own shortly after and that is how the game ended 1-1.

Game 2 vs. Richmond Hill Raiders - The girls seemed to be more 'warmed up' for Game 2 and played a strong game with several chances.  They carried a 2-0 lead through most of the game, with the Raiders scoring late to make the final score 2-1.

Game 3 vs. Ajax United Avalanche - After dominating the play for the majority of the game, the Thunder scored to win 1-0

Game 4 vs. Oshawa Kicks - Although this championship preview game did not count for anything but pride, it was an exciting contest with neither team able to score (0-0).  You knew the championship would be great!

Championship - Playing their 3rd game of the day, the Thunder gave it their all but had difficulty beating a keeper who was having the game of her (short) career.  Congratulations to the Oshawa Kicks for winning 2-1 and hosting a great tournament!  We look forward to some great games between these teams throughout the season.

All the scores can be found on the tournament website.  See the photo album for pictures.

Whitby Iroquois Cup Tournament - Thunder Finalists After Shootout
Whitby Iroquois Soccer Club Logo
The Whitby tournament is now over.  The Thunder played the four other teams in our division with three games Saturday and one Sunday.  The winner from each of the two divisions played in the Championship Game.  Thunder games were as follows:

Game 1 vs. Scarborough Blizzard Red - The Thunder had some early chances but could not capitalize.  The Blizzard then began to gather some confidence and also have some good chances.  The first half finished tied 1-1. In the second half the Thunder made some good passing plays to put a couple home and ended up with the win 3-1.  Although we gained the much coveted win in the first game of the tournament through constant rain, we look forward to a stronger showing in game 2.

Game 2 vs. Pickering Warriors - The Thunder played a much better team game in this one.  Once again through heavy rains the team put forth a strong effort with everyone contributing well.  Final was Thunder 3 and Warriors 0.

Game 3 vs. Whitby Stingers - The Stingers battled hard and some very good saves by the Whitby keeper kept this one close.  It was not until later in the game that the Thunder were able to get one past the keeper.  A second for insurance helped the Thunder fans (and coaches) relax a little. Once again through the rain, the Thunder came out on top 2-0.  Maybe we should hope for rain tomorrow!?

Game 4 vs. Whitby Roadrunners - Although the Thunder had already clinched a berth in the Championship Game, the Roadrunners battled hard to make for another fun game.  By far the Thunder's best team game of the tournament as the passing was great.  Final score was 3-0 for the Thunder sending them to the Championship with a perfect 4-0 record.

Championship vs. Whitby Attack - What a battle.....Also finishing with a perfect 4-0 record, the Whitby Attack made for a great showdown.  They Attacked hard in the early part of the game and before the Thunder knew what hit them the Attack were up 2-0.  Showing a great amount of character and composure, the Thunder quickly showed everyone that they were not about to roll over quit.  The Thunder rebounded with two of their own, including one off an Attack player in front of the net from a corner kick.  The half ended dead locked at two.  A great second half ended at 2-2 after some good chances at both ends......on to overtime.  Once again, two ten minute overtime halves ended, only to show that these teams are a very even match.....on to a shootout.  After four shooters the game was over as the Attack had scored two goals and the Thunder none.

Congratulations to the girls and coaching staff on this great accomplishment of finishing as finalists in both tournaments so far....we look forward to building on this success at our home tournament in July.  Further congratulations to the Whitby Attack on their tournament win and to all the Whitby teams for hosting a great tournament.  Also, many thanks to Coach Mario & Manager Roxanne for hosting a great team BBQ & pool party!  Check out the tounament and party photos (including two videos!) in the Album.

Ajax Canada Cup - Thunder Took on the Club's U10 Challenge
Ajax Soccer Club Logo - Burgandy
The Ajax Canada Cup Tournament is now complete.  The club placed the Thunder up one age category resulting in us playing in the U10 division.  The games are as follows:

Whitby Warriors - After a difficult start the Thunder settled down to play a better 2nd half.  Whitby wins 4-0.

Barrie Spirit - Thunder battled hard, created some good chances (see video below), and played two strong halves.  Although competitive all game, we could not put one in and fell to the favoured Barrie team 3-0.

Ajax Arrows - Thunder came out wanting a win badly resulting in two goals in the first half, but the Arrows fought back with two of their own in the second half...final 2-2.  A great accomplishment

Ajax Cobras - Feeling the heat and being the second game of the day, a tired Thunder team didn't give up but came up short 3-0.

Way to take on the U10 challenge Thunder...you should be proud!

Oakville Regional Tournament - Thunder Win 5 Straight to Take Championship!!!
Oakville Blue Devils Logo
The Thunder had a great first day at the Oakville Tournament winning all three round robin games and thereby winning Group A of the eight team U9 division.  The Thunder dominated their opponents allowing very few shots with only one going in.

After an evening of fun at Tuckers Marketplace and the hotel, the Thunder came ready to play on Sunday.  The semi-final was played against the Ancaster Titans, but once again the Thunder played the majority of the game in the Ancaster end finally beating the strong keeper late in the game resulting in a 1-0 win...on to the final!

The team came out firing in the final taking an early lead against the Flamborough Flames and not looking back.  A strong performance by all the girls allowed the Thunder to take the championship with a convincing 5-0 victory.

It was a great weekend with plenty of good times, not to mention capping it off with a championship title.  It appears the girls are playing some of the best soccer of the season as they look forward to the upcoming DGSL Cup Tournament.

Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff.  Thanks to Oakville for hosting a great tournament.  For the complete results of all the U9 games...click here.  See Julie's photos in the album.

Durham Girls Soccer League Cup Tournament and League Championship
The much anticipated DGSL Cup Tournament was held Aug 27th & 28th marking the conclusion of the 2006 soccer season. The warm-up video below did not seem to be a good way to warm up and practice skills for the tournament after all!  The Thunder seemed to be "off in the distance" to start the tournament resulting in a loss to the Ajax Hornets.  The next game versus the Pickering Power Girls was not much better, but the Thunder squeaked out a 1-0 win.

After game 2, and definitely the highlight of day 1, was the presentation of the Division A League Championship to the Thunder.  With one regular season game remaining, the Thunder have nearly completed the season with only one loss.  Congratulations on a great accomplishment Thunder!!

With the receipt of the trophy possibly reminding them of their ability, game 3 finally saw the Thunder play to their potential with a 4-0 win over the Ajax United Avalanche.  This set the stage for an interesting 4th game for all teams in our division.

However, it was not to be this year as the Thunder tied the Pickering Strikers 1-1 in game 4 while the Ajax Hornets went on to win their 4th game .  As a result, the Thunder do not defend their Cup championship from last season but will no doubt be back next year vying to regain the title.

That ends another great season of Thunder soccer.  In addition to DGSL A League Champions, you can see all our tournament successes on the 'News' page.  Great players, great coaching staff and a supportive parent group results in a fantastic 'team'.  Thanks to all and see you at the field next season!
