Starting the 2013 Spring Season
The Aiken Attack have begun the 2013 Spring travel season. Play started last weekend (2/23/13) in Lexington in the 11th Annual Spring Kickoff Tournament. Everyone was excited to start the new season and ready to begin working on the team goal, obtain USSSA AAA status. The Attack were very eager to see how they would fair against the other teams as they now have a new look.
We welcome JaMonta'e Martin, Corey Connelly, and Skye Foster as new players to the team.
All Saturday games in the tournament were rained out, however the forcast for Sunday looked much better. Games were on a slight delay, due to the wet soggy fields at Pine Grove Park, however play resumed around 10:15 that morning. The Attack's first opponent was the Columbia Ambush. The Ambush had a record of 15-6 against 12uAA Teams so we new it was going to be a good game. The Attack scored first on a bunt by Ty Perry. But the lead was short lived as the Ambush placed hit after hit. Late in the game the Attack made costly errors which became to tough to overcome and in the end it was the Ambush on top by a score of 9-4.
Game two was against the very familiar Augusta Thunderstixx. It seems like the Attack can't play in a tournament where they do not have to play the Tunderstixx at least once. The Attack jumped out to an early lead as usual, and the Thunderstixx made a late comeback as usual. However throughout the game the Attack would bend but not break. They never gave up the lead, even though the Thunderstixx always kept it close. The Attack finished the game with a 8-5 victory. But by allowing the Thnderstixx to score 5 runs the Attack were pushed out of the Championship game. During the game JaMonta'e let everyone know he was in the park by hitting a MONSTER 300ft+ homerun. The first of what is hopefully many more from him.
Although the Attack finished the weekend at 1-1, they ended the tournament with the highest scoring average of all teams in the tournament at 6 runs per game.
