AND THE WINNER OF THE BATTLE OF ALBERTA IS....
First, a recap!
From the minute the Calgary team stepped onto their full sized greyhound bus (!) bound for Red Deer, they felt confident. However, some of their confidence waned when they came across their young Edmonton opponents. They thought they had stumbled upon a midget team in the dressing room until they saw the beer being consumed. Were these guys even old enough to drink?
(Maybe, but were they too old enough to be covering buses in toilet paper?)
Once that moment passed, both teams stepped out on the ice, going strong during the first of three 20 minute stopped periods. Calgary got up 5 - 2, feeling like this could be a cake walk - until they got tired. Edmonton tied the game 5 - 5. Calgary went ahead 6 - 5. Edmonton came back again making it 6 - 6. But with just over two minutes left in the game, Calgary got the last goal, making the final score 7 - 6.
Edmonton played hard until the end, even illegally placing 7 men on the ice for the last minute and a half. Obviously, Calgary was too tired to count players at this point. However, boys will be boys and the requisite hockey scuffle broke near the end of the game. Maybe this was the work of Derrek Wong - the token "bruiser" on the Calgary team who racked up three penalties during the game. While very skilled, he brings new meaning to the word "contact" in contact sport.
Your ING Three Stars:
Mike Hammel - 5 points (3 goals and 2 assists) Kyle Mack - 5 points (2 goals and 3 assists) Blake Romain - 3 points (3 goals). Blake was the "Ringer" from the Edmonton team - brought in last minute by mom Carol Romain-Enders.
We should also give special mention to Anne-Marie Chasse, the lone woman who stepped up to prepare the Calgary men for Wednesday night's game against the Women's X-treme team at the Olympic Oval.
And special thanks to:
Carol Romain-Enders - for not only sending her son in there, but for keeping score along with another friend (name not known at press time).
Darren Godfrey - although he didn't say a word, his presence on the bench was motivating enough. (?) Keith Jerke - even with a hurt knee, he knew Calgary would be too focused to count players on the ice at the end of the game Spectators - thanks for coming out!
