Thursday, December 20 HAPPY HOLIDAYS
As this holiday season approaches, I would like to take a few moments to reflect on the past year. There were HRC runners in virtually every main running event held in the DC metropolitan area and beyond. We are a diverse and dynamic group of people with great talent. We ran marathons from coast to coast, with some runners completing as many as three marathons this year alone. We also had runners that won races throughout the metro area. Our teams trained hard and won their events. These are all awesome accomplishments and should not go without recognition. Everyone should give themselves a huge pat on the back for their individual accomplishments. Some of the events include: George Washington Birthday Classic 10K Williamsburg Colonial Half Marathon Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Miler LaSalle Bank Chicago International Marathon George Washington Parkway Classic 10M Army Ten Miler Berlin Marathon Kiawah Island Marathon Philadelphia Distance Run Veteran’s Day 10K Marine Corps Marathon Annapolis 10M Baltimore Marathon Arlington Fire and Rescue Memorial 9-11 5K Navy Birthday 5 Miler ROCKS 5 Miler Capital Hill 10K Classic HRC Fall River Run Sallie Mae 10K Reston 5K Saint Patrick’s Day 10K Van Metre 5 Miler Hampton Half Marathon Louisville Ironman Kona Ironman … and many many others! As we look forward to the upcoming year, we should set our goals slightly higher to better our times from this year. We should also aspire to add new events to our race line up. I would like to THANK each of you for your hard work and participation in all of the events you have taken part in this year. I would like to charge each of you with the resolve of bringing one new person to the sport of running. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and the most festive of New Years!
Thursday, December 20 WINTER RUNNING
Now that the fall marathon season is almost over, don’t hang up your running shoes just yet! I have selected a few winter races that are sure to keep you in great form for next spring and summer running season. Many runners tend to wind down for the winter and holiday season. Well, I like to buck trends. Past years, I ran a series of races that really challenged me. Along the way, I learned a few things that really helped my running for the upcoming summer. I will share with you the races I ran (and plan to run this year as well) and some of the lessons I learned. If my experiences help one person achieve a new awareness, then my job is done. During the holiday season, I plan to with the thought that I was going to run a half marathon. The race I have in mind is the Colonial Williamsburg Half Marathon in Williamsburg Virginia. In my search for training runs, I discovered several other races that came of interest. Colonial Williamsburg Half Marathon (February), Williamsburg, VA George Washington Birthday Classic 10K (February), Alexandria, VA Saint Patrick's Day 8K (March), Washington, DC Van Metre 5 Miler (March), Ashburn, VA Wirefly Marathon and Half Marathon (March), Washington, DC Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M (April), Washington, DC George Washington Parkway Classic 10M (April), Alexandria, VA Capital Hill 10K Classic, (May), Washington, DC Winter running can be challenging in many ways. It is especially difficult if you run alone. The lack of daylight to complete your runs and the cold temperatures also present challenges. I used a couple of novel concepts to overcome many of those challenges. During the coldest part of my training, I reluctantly ran many boring miles on the treadmill. I know most of you that know me are shocked, but during those cold dark mornings and evenings in winter, the warm bright solitude of a well-lit gym is golden. My biggest challenge was to keep a fresh supply of AA batteries to power my MP3 player as I pound out mile after mile on the moving sidewalk. I also ran during lunchtime (warmest part of the day). I was able to dress down a little for my runs. Running during this time is also great for those of you who are light sensitive and need a certain amount of daylight during the winter months to prevent from feeling depressed or lethargic, but then again, maybe it’s just me. The end result of my sacrifice was a cool one hour, twenty-two minute half-marathon. I finished 39th overall and 4th in my age category. I also went on to run 65 minutes in the Cherry Blossom 10M and 64 in the GW Parkway Classic 10M. You may find more information about these races on the team’s calendar. If you are interested in more information about the course or support first-hand, just let me know. I will be happy to share any of my experiences with you. Friday, June 8 FEATURED RUNNER: William (Bill) Taylor
By: Robb Denmark Sometimes in our lives, we meet people that inspire us. They awaken all that is good and well-meaning within us. Well our next featured runner is such a person. William (Bill) Taylor has had a very colorful running history. He is no stranger to hard training work-outs as his honorable 31 year military career has prepared him well for the ups and downs of a runner’s life. Bill began running as most Soldiers did, during the course of normal Army PT. He began running competitively at the age of 35 by entering occasional local races at Fort Benning, Georgia between 1981 and 1985. Bill was first assigned to the Army Human Resources Command (HRC) in 1986. During that time he ran the organization day Fall River Run 10K and the infamous Army Ten Miler. He also ran his first marathon in 1987; followed closely by his second marathon in 1988. Upon leaving HRC in 1990, Bill remained fit, but did not race again for 6 years. In 1996, Bill returned to HRC as the Chief of Assignments, Colonels Division, Deputy Director of the Officer Personnel Management Directorate and then HRC’s Chief of Staff. Leading by example, Bill organized and participated on the HRC Army Ten Mile Team. He was always one of the fastest runners of the team. All Army Ten Mile team trophies won by HRC were won during his tenure at HRC or whereby he was a member of the team. Bill has also racked up quite a few individual trophies at the Army Ten Mile race. He has the following standing records: Best over 50 time for the Army Ten-Miler: 60:09 Best over 55 time for the Army Ten-Miler: 61:35 (Done in 2006, age 57; best in category for 2006). Bill’s accomplishments don’t end there. At the age of 52, he ran the 2000 Richmond Sun Trust Marathon in a blazing 3:00:35. Bill was recently ranked first in his category by the Washington Running Report for the 2006 Winter Running Season. He is currently ranked fifth. Bill’s running career has generally been centered on his assignments at HRC. He enjoys running and more importantly, he enjoys training and competing with the high caliber of runners here at HRC. Look for more great results from Bill. He’s just warming up! Wednesday, June 6 HRC Repeats Win as Cross Country Champions
HRC's cross country team took first place for the second time in as many years on Wednesday at the Fort Belvoir Intramurals Cross Country Championship. The event, part of Fort Belvoir's Commmander's Cup competition was held on the fort's North 36 Golf Course. The course was a challenging 3.4 mile hilly point-to-point course. There were 7 teams and more than 150 runners total. HRC had 29 runners. In addition to the first place team trophy, HRC also took home, first place men's open, first place veterans men's, second place veterans men's, first place women's open and second place veterans women's. HRC was already in the lead for the Fort Belvoir Commander's Cup Trophy, however, this win further widens the gap between first and second place units. Friday, May 12 HRC Team Places 1st at Intramural Event
HRC fielded a coed team for the Fort Belvoir Intramural Formation Run on Friday, May 11, 2007. The run began at 0700 on the track at Pullen Field near the base's PXtra. There were nine teams total and each began the run at two minute intervals. Each team received 5 points for each runner that crossed the finish line for a possible 110 points. The team also received points for their finish time. HRC's team crossed the finish line with a time of 44:01 and received 40 points. HRC's score total was 150 which placed them as the number 1 team. Way to go team!!!! Wednesday, April 4 HRC Team Places Second at Cherry Blossom Ten Miler
An HRC team placed second at this year's Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile race on Sunday, April 1, 2007. This years race was also the Road Runner's Club of America's US Championship. HRC fielded three teams in the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler. The teams were AHRC Patriots Red, AHRC Patriots White and AHRC Patriots Blue. Team were scored based on the finishing time of the first two male runners and the fist female runner. Maximum number of runners per team was 5. HRC's Red Team took second in the Government Agency Category with a combined time of 3:24:57. HRC's Blue team was 11th and the White team was 15th. The weather was perfect for a 10 mile race and everyone took great advantage of it. More than half of HRC's runners ran faster than their Army Ten Mile time of last October. This fact made team captain, Robb Denmark very happy as he expects great things from them for this year's Army Ten Miler.
