TRYOUT PROCESS EXPLAINED
Agoura High School Girls Soccer is a competitive program, subject to a Tryout process, and the competition between players just to make the Varsity, JV or Frosh/Soph teams will be spirited. The tryout process is designed to be as thorough as possible under CIF rules and, of course, be open and available to everyone who desires to tryout.
Our program begins with Summer Practice/Tryout Sessions conducted over several weeks and all new and returning players are urged to attend. (Specific information as to dates, times, etc., will appear on this website in May, and will be mailed to 8th graders who have indicated an interest in playing soccer for AHS next season.)
Those players who participate in the summer program are evaluated by the coaching staff. Based on performance during the summer practices, many potential Varsity or JV level players will be invited to participate in a 6th Period Physical Education class devoted exclusively to practicing soccer, beginning in the Fall semester. But, NO ONE, AT ANY LEVEL OF SOCCER ABILITY, WILL BE CUT FROM THE GIRLS SOCCER PROGRAM IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE SUMMER PRACTICE PROGRAM, OR AS A RESULT OF THEIR INABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUMMER PROGRAM FOR ANY REASON.
At various times between September and early November, additional Tryout sessions will be held for 9th grade players who are not then enrolled in 6th Period Soccer P.E. Final Tryouts for all three teams will be conducted in mid-November, which is the first official week of the soccer season, and at which time final cuts will be made. Though not everyone who tries out will earn a position on a team, EVERYONE WHO WISHES TO TRYOUT WILL BE GIVEN A THOROUGH AND FAIR EVALUATION BEFORE FINAL CUTS ARE MADE.
It is our policy and practice that no player is required to participate in a Club, AYSO, or other soccer program in order to qualify for a spot on an AHS soccer team, nor does participation in such an outside program guarantee a position on an AHS soccer team. What matters is soccer ability, fitness and attitude.
QUESTIONS ABOUT "CLUB SOCCER" ANSWERED
The question presented by many parents and players is, DOES A PLAYER HAVE TO BE ON A CLUB SOCCER TEAM TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE VARSITY TEAM? The corollary to that question is, IF A PLAYER IS ON A CLUB SOCCER TEAM, DOES THIS ASSURE HER OF MAKING THE VARSITY TEAM?
The answer to both questions is an unqualified, "NO". THE ONLY WAY OF PLAYING ON THE VARSITY TEAM IS TO PLAY THE GAME OF SOCCER AT A VARSITY LEVEL. Of course, soccer is a game where improvement to a Varsity level of play is often best realized with constant practice and constant playing against competitors who also play at a Varsity level. (An athlete's ability tends to advance to the approximate level of their usual competition.) In our area, while not all Club Soccer players are playing Varsity level soccer, still, it is a fact that nearly all Varsity level players are now playing, or have played, Club Soccer. Therefore, while playing on a Club Soccer team is not a pre-requisite to playing on the Varsity team, CLUB SOCCER WILL PROVIDE A PLAYER WITH AN OPPORTUNITY, THOUGH NOT AN ASSURANCE, OF IMPROVING HER GAME TO THE VARSITY LEVEL.
But, to re-state our team policy and practice: A player does not have to play on a Club team to play on the Varsity team. Playing on a Club team does not assure a player of playing on the Varsity team.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN TRYING-OUT FOR A CLUB SOCCER TEAM?
Is club soccer fun? Yes. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it time consuming? Yes. Will it require that you work harder at soccer than you've ever worked before? Yes. Will you have to be an excellent soccer player just to make a club team? Yes. Is it political? Absolutely. Do you have to play club soccer to play on the AHS Varsity team, and does it guarantee you a place on the Varsity team, or guarantee you playing time? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Then, you might be asking yourself, "Why should I bother. Even if I play Club, I may not make the Varsity team?" That is true enough. The answer is that playing on a Club team may assist you in improving your game to the Varsity level. A few individuals will find this reason enough to make the necessary sacrifices. Many will not. If you are interested, check the list below for local Club teams that will be holding try-outs in the immediate future for the upcoming season.
