GLBA NO LONGER OPERATING
The Great Lakes Basketball Association is NO LONGER IN OPERATION due to illness.

Bob Fillmore, the Founding President of the Great Lakes Basketball and a lifelong diabetic has started having complications from his diabetes in the last three years.

  • In 2007 Bob Fillmore was through the emergency room 20 times and admitted 7 times.
  • In 2008 Bob Fillmore was through the emergency room 4 times and admitted 3 times.
  • As of July 18th, 2009, Bob Fillmore has been through the emergency room

The diabetes has affected his stomach's ability to digest food, vision problems, and kidney failure.

Presently Bob Fillmore is a patient of Harper Hospital, part of the Detroit Medical Center, where he is trying to get on a transplant list for a new kidney and new pancreas. However, that in itself is a very difficult road. Social workers at Harper Hospital are strongly encouraging donations to Fillmore as well as fundraisers to help offset pre-transplant as well as post-transplant costs.

WHAT IS SEMI-PRO?
Semi-professional is a cross between the adult Y-Center type leagues and the professional level leagues.

Everybody involved retains their amateur status, with little to no pay being received. From this aspect it is not any different than the Y-Center or city recreation type leagues. IT IS A HOBBY!

While a hobby, even for ownership, each franchise is a legally registered business that is owned and operated seperate from their league (the GLBA).

The estimated cost of doing business for a semi-pro organization is $50,000-$75,000 per year for basketball.

To offset the costs of doing business each franchise will attract fans to their games, sell tickets for admission, sell advertising & sponsorship options, sell game programs, sell souveirs, sell 50/50 tickets, etc.. From this aspect it is no different than the professional level.
