Patriots Win Fourth, Look At Body Of Work
Freshman Quarterback Cory Cooper threw a perfect strike to Junior wide out Jay Starks with 5:45 remaining in the fourth quarter to push the Allen County-Scottsville Patriot football team ahead 6-0.
Okay, so maybe that was only counting the fourth quarter and maybe it was against the Purples JV and maybe the powerful Purples 49 points over the prior three quarters left the final 49-6. But as the first playoff game in 4 years for the Patriots came to a close, there was reason to, of course, learn from the negative, but mostly to accentuate the positive and look at the body of work for 2006. And a nice piece of work it was.
It seemed bad luck when rain poured and Meet The Patriots and the unveiling of a new coach had to be moved into the gymnasium. But bad luck turned into an amazing football atmosphere with one side of the bleachers packed with the present and future of the Patriot program. The band played loud and the fans were worked into a frenzy by announcer Carver. And the fun began.
But the fun was just a continuation for the Patriot squad. Work started in the spring and continued before and after the dead period. Weight lifting, passing leagues, and a good lineman camp in Owensboro and the groundwork was laid for what was to be a winning season.
New recruits joined the squad and experienced coaches joined the staff. New coach Brad Hood, who was born and raised into a football atmosphere, looked at home in the headset, at least when it stayed on his head, that is.
And the new general quickly became a mentor. That was evident as the team knelt around Hood on the Bowling Green grass as the season ended. When Hood proclaimed to the 13 seniors that he would be there for them if needed in the future, there wasn't a shadow of a doubt that he can and will fulfill that promise.
Hey, let's be honest, winning is fun, but good leadership, no matter the wins, is invaluable. Hood got off on the right foot in that area.
Hood said at Meet The Patriots that he wasn't sure if the Patriots could win a game, but he guarenteed that "we would get after everybody" and play hard. That guarentee was delivered by a good group of young men and, if truth be known, Hood was playing possum on us and was confident the victories would come. And six times they did.
As for the Purples, they march on. Good luck to Steelman, Hibbitt, Johnson and Coach Wallace as they barrel toward a trip to Papa John's Stadium on the first day of December. They are a tremendously talented team that might rank as high, or higher, than any of the other great Purple squads. But every member of the Patriot team should hold their head high and be proud of who they are and of what they have accomplished, because indeed much was accomplished in 2006.
Week Ten
Patriots Win In Mother Nature Bowl
Fullback Flint Lich pounded the soaked turf 23 times for 97 yards and the Patriots survived a long, rainy, windy, cold trip to Breckinridge County with an 8-6 win. Throw in a lightning delay and Mother Nature came with some of her best.
But the elements overshadowed what was otherwise an outstanding performance by a winless Tiger squad and a heroic effort by the Patriot defense with the two-point difference a result of some good high school football drama.
The pivotal moments began as the Tigers, led outstandingly by the air attack of Quarterback Tate Glasscock, drove the ball early in the second quarter to the Patriot 2 yard line and threatened to break a scoreless tie. The Tigers were looking not only for their first lead of the game, but for their first lead of the year. But a streak of lightning put the Tiger drive on hold at second down and goal from the two and both teams retired to the safety of dry dressing rooms.
The delay allowed Coach Brad Hood to hold what some people in the south might describe as a "Come To Jesus" meeting. The conversion to more intensity was obvious when the delay ended and the Patriot defense shut down the Tigers on three straight plays, handing the AC-S offense the ball with 98 yards between them and paydirt.
Lich, tailback Andy Caldwell, and Quarterback Cory Cooper proceded to chew up the second quarter clock advancing the ball 97 of those yards to the Tiger one with one minute and fifteen seconds to play in the half. But the Tiger defense answered with a tremendous goal line stand as they denied Caldwell on fourth and one.
The difference maker came next when Taylor Berry shot through the line and downed Glasscock in the end zone for a safety. And on a night when the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals, some two hundred miles to the west, were in the process of nailing down their 10th World Series championship, the Tigers and the Patriots went to halftime with a baseball-like tally of 2-0.
The rest of the scoring came within a seventeen second span in the third quarter when Cooper culminated a 10 play, 5 minute, 45 second, 53 yard drive with a sneak from the one at the 1:02 mark and Tiger kick returner James Young returned the ensueing kickoff 80 yards. Glasscock's pass failed on the pivotal two-point conversion and the Patriots took what would be the final score into the fourth quarter.
The Patriot defense was once again tested late in the fourth as the Tigers drove the ball to the enemy 18. But Glassock was sacked twice and the Patriots took over with just under two minutes to go. The ground attack, which totaled 200 yards for AC-S, moved the chains twice and Cooper took two kneel-downs to run out the clock.
Despite the sloppy conditions Glasscock was 8-17 for 107 yards and the Tigers did not turn the ball over. The Patriots only turnover was a first-half ending interception by Cooper. The Patriots end the regular season with a +14 turnover differiential.
Berry led the Patriot defense with 2 tackles, 2 sacks, one tackle for a loss, and of course the big tackle for a safety. Jonathan Crowe and Jon Ed Taylor each had a sack. Justin Fox had a very important rugby-style punt that was downed inside the Breckinridge 10.
Week Nine
Patriots Shutout Trojans On Emotional Senior Night
The clock had ticked to zero and the Patriots had recorded shutout number two over a Barren County team this year. After defeating Glasgow 21-0 in September, a relentless Patriot defense and a 343-yard ground attack had white-washed the Barren County Trojans 40-0 at Patriot Field.
Coach Bradley Hood had just missed getting doused by the water bucket and had finsihed huddling at midfield with his troops. It was a sweet and fulfilling way for the 13 Patriot Seniors to play their final contest on the Patriot bermuda. But Zach Cooke, Sam Mooney, Andy Caldwell, Patrick Arterburn and the rest of the Seniors could not leave the field. Cooke and others sprawled out at the 50 yard line and reflected upon the finality of it all and surely re-lived many moments from Little League to Middle School to Junior Varsity to this night.
Surely reflecting upon the times that forever will link this bunch that proudly strolled from the field hand in hand. Linked not just one year from now, nor 20 years from now, but forever. Even as Josh Bewley and Tim Maynard and Drew Anderson sit around a ritzy retirement village some 60 years from now and play checkers, they will be forever linked. Linked to two-a-days, maybe a vomit or two, and other memories that only they know.
And we fans will link them to the year that the Patriot program was turned around. The year these Seniors led a young squad of underclassmen that were pressed into service and asked to grow up quickly. The year that a young, excited, already football-savvy coach followed the bloodlines into a coaching career. A young coach smart enough and confident enough to surround himself with high quality, veteran assistants. The year that will be looked back on as a crossroad.
Flint Lich ran for 111 and a touchdown, Caldwell for 78 and a touchdown, Corey Shockley 68 and a touchdown, Brett Boards 39 and paydirt, and Mooney intercepted his sixth pass of the year, returning it for his second pick touchdown of the year. Freshman Casey Napier plunged in from the one on his first carry of the year and Arterburn was all over the field recording two sacks. The Trojans mustered only 50 total yards with 78 of that in the air and minus 28 on the ground.
Those are some of the particulars of October 20th, and there is still work to do, but consider this night, this 40-0 win an ending, yet one in the series of great beginings for this football program. Jump on, it should be a fun ride.
Week Eight
Patriots Drop Decison To Purples Despite Good Peformance
A moral victory always translate into a loss. And for a young program on the rise, soon such will not be acceptable. However, the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots can claim such a victory after dropping a 36-6 district tilt to the Bowling Green Purples on Friday night.
The score is not pretty until you consider the opponent. The Purples came into the contest ranked number one in the state in AAA. The Purples haven't lost a regular season game to a public school since October of 2002 and they sport numerous post-high school players, including quite a few potential Division One players led namely by Kentucky Mr. Football candidate Avery Hibbitt. The Purples had shelled district opponents by a total of 173-7 this year with 8 shutouts in the last 9 district games. In short, the Purples are loaded with talented athletes that a coaching staff handles well.
But the young Patriots showed a little swagger of their own. After the Purples had scored on their first play from scrimmage on a hook and ladder that Anthony Davis took in from 32 yards out, the Patriots proceded to engineer an outstanding 75 yard, 10 play drive that Sophomore Fullback Flint Lich culminated with a one yard plunge. Lich had 8 carries for 50 yards on the drive.
The Purples answered one minute and five seconds later as Hibbitt went a scintilating 37 yards for a score on his first carry of the night. Davis scored again on a one yard run with 2:36 in the first and Hibbitt found paydirt at the 11:30 mark of the 2nd and the Purples were rolling 27-6.
But the Patriot defense adjusted, getting better pressure on Steelman, and the Patriot offense ball controlled as they have much of the year, and the next 28 minutes plus of the game saw only a safety recorded by the Purples. Hibbitt scored for the third time with 6:26 to go to end the scoring.
Patriot Coach Bradley Hood was proud the way his young troops played in the second half.
"In the second half we came out and competed," Hood said. "We laid it on the line, we didn't have anything to lose.....and the kids played hard. It made for an interesting second half."
Hibbitt led all rushers with 122 yards on 15 carries and Lich led the Patriots with 74 yards on 21 carries. Davis led all receivers with 4 catches for 93 yards. Steelman was 11-19 for 157 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Patriot Cory Cooper was 1-7 for seven yards.
Andy Caldwell led the Patriot defense with seven solo tackles and 4 assisted take downs while linebackers Taylor Berry and Corey Shockley recorded 6 and 5 tackles, respectively.
The Patriot defense had a seven game turnover streak ended as the Purples did not give it away and the Patriots turned the ball over once on a fumble. The Patriots still have a +12 turnover differential on the year.
Week Seven
Patriots Take Big District Game at Adair County
Patriot Quarterback Cory Cooper scored twice and Senior Sam Mooney had two return touchdowns as the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots downed Adair County 33-14 on Friday night. The win evened the Patriots district record at 2-2 and was a huge step in securing a playoff spot. A win against either Bowling Green or Breckinridge County would put the Patriots in the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
The two teams broke in the new Adair County facility in exciting fashion in the first quarter as both combined on 5 touchdowns in a 3:22 stretch with three being scored in the final 12 seconds. Cooper started the flurry of points with a 12 yard run with 3:22 to go. Mooney intercepted Indians Quarterback Joseph Willis and followed a line of blockers for 57 yards to give the Patriots a 13-0 lead at the 1:34 mark. Adair County fullback Jonathan Williams plunged over from the 3 with 12 seconds to go and the track meet was on.
On the ensueing kickoff, Mooney raced 72 yards for a touchdown with one tick left on the clock. However, Oba Thompson answered for the Indians with a 76 yard touchdown return of his own and the Patriots led 21-14 as the quarter expired.
That ended the scoring frenzy as the two teams battled to two scoreless periods in the second and third. Cooper gave the Patriots breathing room with 11:57 to go in the fourth with a one yard dive and Andy Caldwell sealed the game with a nine yard dash to the endzone with 2:36 remaining.
Caldwell led Patriot rushers with 82 yards on 13 carries with Flint Lich contributed 49 from his fullback spot. Senior Brett Boards had three big fourth quarter carries for 35 yards. Cooper was 6-15 for 69 yards.
Taylor Berry led the Patriot defense once again with 7 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles and three tackles for a loss. Mooney had 5 solo tackles and two interceptions to give him a team leading 5 picks on the year. Logan Russell also had an interception. The Indians could only muster 149 total yards against the stingy Patriot defense. The Patriots had 181 yards on the ground.
Week Six
O-Line Responds To Challenge, Patriots Upend Logan
Patriot head coach Bradley Hood had challenged his offensive line this week to produce a 100-yard rusher. They did him one better. Sophomore Fullback Flint Lich rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries and Senior Tailback Andy Caldwell notched 100 yards on 15 carries as the Patriots won an important district matchup 26-14 over Logan County at Patriot Field on Friday night. The game was a tale of momentum swings.
The Patriots scored on the initial possession of the game with a 12 play, five minute, forty second drive that was capped with Wide Receiver Sam Mooney taking a reverse pitch from Quarterback Cory Cooper and sprinting 25 yards to the end zone. The extra point was missed.
The Patriots scored again at the 5:13 mark in the second quarter after a Taylor Berry blitz and sack caused a Logan fumble. Lineman Jonathan Crowe returned the fumble two yards to the Cougar 10 where Caldwell scored on the first play. A two-point conversion try failed and the Patriots led 12-0 at the half.
The momentum of the first half for the Patriots was partially squelched by a long lightning delay at half time, and the Cougars came out with a lot of energy driving the ball 66 yards in five minutes and fifty seconds with Senior tailback Jeffrey Sydnor finishing the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. The snap on the extra point was botched however holder Blake Meacham picked the ball up and threw to a wide open Sydnor for the two point conversion.
Momentum continued to be on Logan's side as they forced the Patriot's into a punt, however linebacker Corey Shockley came up with a big interception at the 5:56 mark and Caldwell scored again, this time from the one, with 2:16 reamaining in the third to stretch the lead to 18-8. The two point conversion attempt failed.
The teams swapped possessions early in the fourth quarter until Logan went o n a 74 yard drive that Quarterback Alex Graves capped by scrambling 13 yards into the end zone. The extra point failed and AC-S led by four.
Patriot Fullback Flint Lich fumbled on the first play of the subsequent drive and Logan had the ball with 3:37 to go at their own 38 yard line. However, as he has been doing all year, linebacker Taylor Berry came up with a big defensive play by intercepting Graves at the Patriot 40 yard line.
The offensive line responded to that momentum swinger and the Patriots drove the ball on the ground with authority and Lich surpassed the century mark rushing for an 18 yard touchdown to guarentee the victory. The scoring was finished when Patrick Arterburn sacked Graves in the end zone for a safety.
Week Five
Rushers Power Wildcats Over Patriots
Sophomore Quarterback Courtney Dalcourt ran for 115 yards on 15 carries while Junior tailback Jereece Payne tallied 104 yards on 25 carries as the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats defeated the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots 21-7 at Shadetree Mathews Stadium on Friday.
The Wildcats broke the game open with two middle of the third quarter scores. Dalcourt went 52 yards for a score on second and long at the 6:34 mark and Wildcat Zack Herrington, only one minute and 46 seconds later, returned a punt 74 yards for a score.
The Wildcats had taken a 7-0 lead with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter on a nine play, 54 yard drive that was capped by a Dalcourt to Robert Kennedy touchdown pass with kicker Will Allen driving home the extra point.
As has been the case for much of the year, the Patriot offense had opportunities. The Patriots kept the ball seven minutes and 10 seconds on a 14 play drive that stalled at the Wildcat two yard line when the defense stiffened.
The Wildcats then went on a march of their own only to come up empty. A 12 play drive spanning 5:59 saw the Wildcats take the ball to the Patriot 8 yard line but a subsequent turnover gave the Patriots the ball back with only seconds to play in the half and Frankin-Simpson took the touchdown lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Patriots attempted a feverish come back in the fourth quarter after a botched handoff on a Wildcat reverse was recovered by lineman Johnathan Crowe. The Patriots drove the ball 50 yards on 7 plays in 2 minutes and 51 seconds with Patriot Senior Captain Andy Caldwell taking a pitch from Quarterback Cory Cooper and sprinting 17 yards to the end zone.
On the ensuing kickoff, Senior Zach Cooke executed a perfect two hop onside kick that bounded off a Wildcat front line return man but, unfortunately for the Patriots, the ball caromed out of bounds and the Wildcats had possession.
The Wildcats turned the ball over, the Patriots punted, and the Wildcats turned the ball over again with one minute and 48 seconds left. The Patriots drove the ball to the Wildcat one yard line but was stuffed on 3rd and 4th down plays and the Wildcats ran out the clock.
Fullback Flint Lich led Patriot rushers with 68 yards on 16 carries. Cooper was 6-18 for 87 yards and one interception. Mooney had three catches for 63 yards. Lich led all tacklers with 5 solo's and 5 assisted as well as recording a fumble recovery. Junior Sam Fowler had a good night with 5 solo tackles and 3 assisted.
Week Four
Raider Machine Too Much For Patriots
The Warren East Raiders used numerous weapons in rolling up 418 yards in total offense as they hammered the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots 42-6 on Friday night at Patriot Field.
Junior Quarterback Jordan Ellis was the focal point of the Raider machine as he hit on 12 of 19 passes for 180 yards with the ground game anchored by speedy Sophomore Shenard Holton who rushed for 106 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
The Raiders scored on their first two possessions with the initial score coming at the 5:01 mark of the first quarter when fullback Aaron Murphy went off left tackle on third and one for a 49 yard score. The Raiders completed a 4 minute, 44 second, 44 yard drive when Holton dove in from the one with 10:06 remaining in the first half. The drive was highlighted by an 18-yard strike from Ellis to wideout Kyle McGuffey.
The Patriots had a chance to get back into the game after recovering two Raider fumbles, one recovered by Sophomore Patrick Arterburn on the Raider 16. The Patriots had driven to the Raider 5 on the previous possession but AC-S could not punch in a score on either opportunity. Patriot defensive back Sam Mooney intercepted a pass in the end zone with seven seconds to go in the first half to keep the score at 14-0.
The Raider scoring machine struck on the first play from scrimmage in the second half when Holton took the ball around left end and raced 71 yards for a score. That was the start of a 21 point third quarter for the Raiders.
The Patriots were able to put together a nice drive of their own marching 75 yards on 8 plays culminating as Patriot Quarterback Cory Cooper hit Mooney for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 4:56 remaining in the third. Ellis scored from 6 yards out with 1:12 remaining in the third and Antonious Owens capped the Raider scoring with a two yard run in the fourth quarter.
Senior fullback Aaron Murphy scored twice while rushing for 61 yards on 5 carries as well as grabbing two tosses for 48 yards. Fullback Flint Lich led the Patriots in rushing with 50 yards on 13 carries. Cooper was 7-17 for 115 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. One bright spot for the Patriots was the play of Junior Wide Receiver Jay Starks. Starks hauled in two nice catches for 50 yards.
Week Three
Patriots Shutout Scotties
Junior Linebacker Taylor Berry had 7 solo tackles, 5 assissted tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, two blocked kicks and one sack in leading Allen County-Scottsville to a 21-0 shutout of the Glasgow Scotties on Friday. The Patriot defense limited the Scotties to only 90 yards on the ground and 25 through the air while forcing four turnovers.
Freshman Quarterback Cory Cooper made his first varsity start and guided a Patriot offense that, while not spectacular, controlled the ball and played almost mistake free.
The Patriots got on the board at the 2:55 mark in the first quarter after the Scotties had turned the ball over at the ACS 49. Patriot fullback Flint Lich capped a 6 minute, 22 second, 11 play drive with a one yard plunge.
The Scotties best scoring chance came in the second quarter as they drove the ball inside the Patriot 30 but the Patriot defense stiffened and Berry broke through the line to block a 44-yard field goal attempt by outstanding Scottie kicker Drew Kuzma.
The Patriots second score came at the 2:24 mark in the third quarter on a nine yard drive that was set up by Berry pushing his blocker into an attempted punt. The Patriots recovered at the nine and Cooper scored from the one 3 plays later. Andy Caldwell scored from 56 yards on a punt return with 8:01 in the fourth to cap the scoring. Senior Zach Cooke knocked home all three extra point attempts.
Lich had 51 yards on 14 carries while Blake Perkins led the Scotties with 43 yards on the ground. Caldwell had 36 yards rushing and Cooper had 22. Cooper was 3-9 through the air with no interceptions. The Patriots turned the ball over only once while the Scotties gave it up 4 times. John Ed Taylor had two fumble recoveries while Logan Russell had one. Caldwell recorded an interception.
The victory for the Patriots was the first over the Scotties since 1995.
Week Two
Patriots Clip Falcons
Patriot fullback Flint Lich pounded out 84 yards on 18 carries and Freshman Cory Cooper tossed his first career touchdown pass as Allen County-Scottsville defeated Monroe County 20-6. The win also secured the first career win for Patriot head man Brad Hood.
After a scoreless first quarter, Patriot senior Andy Caldwell accounted for the only score in the first half as he plunged in from the three with 10:59 remaining in the second quarter. The Falcons mounted a late half drive that ended with a Logan Russell interception as time ran out.
The Patriots scored on the first possession of the second half as Lich and Caldwell slammed into the line for short gains leading to a Cooper play action, 44 yard roll out strike to Sophomore Allen Witcher. With the Falcons biting on the ball fake, Witcher came wide open down the sideline , Cooper hit him and the Patriots led 14-0 after a successful two point conversion.
The Patriots played relatively mistake free football until the 6:47 mark of the third quarter when a holding penalty interrupted a drive inside the Falcons twenty. The Falcons recovered a Cooper fumble on the next play and scored a little over a minute later when Falcon Quarterback Seth Graves hit Kayle Tarter for a 21 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked by Taylor Berry and the Patriots held on to a 14-6 lead.
After the Falcons had stuffed the Patriots on the next drive, punter Justin Fox pinned the Falcons deep in their own territory. On third and long, Senior Sam Mooney recorded one of his two interceptions on the night and returned the ball to the Falcon 5 yard line. Caldwell scored on 4th and goal from the one to end the scoring.
Caldwell had 35 yards on 12 carries and Sopomore Quarterback Jake Marr had 18 yards on 3 carries including an impressive 13 yard scramble. Fox and Lich led the defense with 6 solo tackles each and Mooney recovered a fumble to go with his two picks. Berry also had fumble recovery to go with his blocked kick.
Cooper was 2-2 for 47 yards while Marr completed 2 passes in three attempts for 7 yards. The Patriots had 233 totals yards while the Falcons amassed 162.
Week One
Eagles Shutout Patriots In Opener
Westmoreland QB Matt Madison threw for two scores and ran for another as the visiting Eagles defeated the Patriots 35-0 on friday night.
The Senior Madison hooked up with Evan Bohanan for 64 yards with 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead and hit Kyle Rippy for a 50 yard bomb at the 10:11 mark of the second quarter. After a running into the kicker penalty gave the Eagles another chance, Madison scampered 84 yards for the Eagles final score with 10:49 to go in the game. Eagle fullback Jake Johnson got things going for the Eagles with a one yard plunge with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter.
The Patriots offense turned the ball over on their first three possessions and, despite having the ball inside Eagle territory 8 times in the second half could not punch in a score. A throw from Patriot Senior QB Zach Cooke was dropped in the endzone just before the first half and the Patriot ground game could not muster a consistent threat.
Cooke was 2-10 for 32 yards while Freshman Cory Cooper went 3-8 for 23 yards in an inspiring varsity debut. Cooper was picked once and sacked twice but showed outstanding poise. Captain Andy Caldwell led the Patriot rushing attack with 42 yards while Sophomore fullback Flint Lich gained 27 yards. Two late game rushes by promising Freshman Jerry Ward notched him 24 yards.
