Apaches Crush the Rocks!

Tuesday, Oct 5

The Antonian volleyball teams traveled to IWC for a key district match.

The Varsity team was focused to defeat the Shamrocks. Earlier that day the IW girls had been ranked 10th in the city, so the Apaches were primed for an upset. Behind the strong play of the starters and extra efforts from the bench, the loud, but supportive, crowd of fans cheered on the Lady Apaches as the Varsity team took the match in five games. After losing the first game 19-25 the Apaches came back to even the games with a score of 25-19. the Lady Apaches dug even deeper and turned the momentum around by winning the next game 25-23. The Shamrocks then rallied and evened the games again at 2-2 with a close win of 25-23. The final game, a rally up to 15 points was decided by the Apaches by a score of 15-10. Senior Tara Shelton led the team with 18 kills. Her powerful hits were not only well-timed but were huge factors in keeping the games tight. Both teams played intelligently and kept the gym loud and excited with their great plays. Senior Kristyn Gonzales moved the ball around very effectively and led the team with an amazing 41 assists. She led the floor and put the ball where it needed to go, letting her teammates take it from there. The strong combination of the junior starters with the senior captains was a deciding factor in the victory and should make the coaches happy about next year's prospects too. Juniors Lauren Heintzelman, Kayla Cuen and Cortney Anderson teamed with senior Tara Shelton to block many of the Shamrocks hits. Lauren Heintzelman kept the ball alive all night with 25 digs. Great serving also was a key to victory. Freshman Kelly Cuen got the crowd going with a big shot during the match that served notice that the Apaches' future will be bright. It was an awesome display of teamwork and some great individual efforts, when needed, by both teams. With this victory the Lady Apaches are right back in the district race. Thursday's game with Providence will be very important to the overall standings as each team seems to take turns beating each other. Way to go Coach Rod, Hines and the ladies' volleyball teams. Good Luck against Providence!!

State Swim Results

Congratulations to all of our Apache Swim team members. They were awesome at the State Meet. At Regionals they qualified to compete in 12 individual events and 3 relays. The state swim team was made up of:

Andrew Dobson - Soph.
Emily Goodrich - Fr.
Doug Howard - Jr.
Katie Konzal - Soph.
Cate Matlock - Jr.
Heather Matlock - Fr.
Erika Roach - Fr.
Sophie Peterson - Soph.
Kateri Whitley - Fr.

In the Prelim competition every team member achieved a personal best, taking anywhere from .07 to 6.91 seconds off their seed times. The relays all got personal bests too, taking off between .69 up to 2.50 seconds off their seed times. All individuals and relays qualified to finals as either 1st heat or as one of two alternates with these fast times.

In finals only the top 3 finishers are recognized. Erika Roach placed 3rd in the 100 yard butterfly, taking another 1.35 seconds off her seed time.

Good job Apaches!
