BB06 Succes vs Estrella Dec
Outhustled: Estrella surrounded the boards and ran the floor vs Success
Estrella 31, Success 21

Led by Carl Crayton's 14 points, a smaller but athletic Estrella dominated the boards but missed their first six shots before taking a 6-0 lead into the 9 minute mark. Success battled back, but at 4 minute mark Estrella went on another 8-0 scoring spree on the strength of 4 straight fast break layups to take a 18-5 lead into the half.

Success came out motivated in the second half but poor free throw shooting, turnovers and the fact that a smaller, faster, Estrella team had multiple second and third shots on goal proved too much to overcome. Alex Escobedo and Adrienne Leonne each had a game high 7 rebounds each, Ray Almanew added 5 for Estrella. Success was led by Lamont Blevins' season high 7 steals and 7 points. Victor Delgado added 6 points and four steals.   Malik Hennix had 9 rebounds.

BB06 Adrienne Leon
Estrella's Adrienne Leon had a breakout game against Ocotillo
6:30 PM
ESTRELLA 46, OCOTILLO 32
After a slow start, Ocotillo took the lead after a Justin Kromrie layup and led 11-6 at the 7 minute mark. Ocotillo slowed the usually up tempo Rattlers and led 15-6 after a Max Sellers shot. Ocotillo's ability to slow the game down to their liking, a half court pace was the key in the first half. Estrella managed to speed the game up and cut into ocotillo's lead, but a slimmed down Sellers cut through the middle seemingly at will as Ocotillo led 21-15 with under a minute left in the half. The Rattlers came storming back, picking up the pace and went on a 5-0 run capped by a Adrienne Leon 3 point play closing it to 21-20 at the half.

In the second half, Ocotillo's half court game was halted as Estrella came out running and deploying a full court press and led 36-25 at the 8 minute mark. Soon after that, Max Sellers fouled out and Estrella outscored and outrebounded Ocotillo the rest of the way for the win.

Adrienne Leone scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Estrella. Alex Escobedo (10), Andre Deniels (9) and Carl Crayton (7) aslo contributed. Ocotillo scoring leaders were Tyrone bruno (11), Justin Kromrie (10) and Max Sellers (9).

7:30 PM
SUMMITT 24, PEORIA ACCELERATED 16
Summit Didn't agree with the fact that Peoria came out the blocks ranked #2. They took it personally and did something about it. This one got off to a slow start, 6 minutes until the first bucket. Summit led 6-2 at the 5 minute mark and seemed to be taking control as both teams slowed their pace. A Danny Saucedo jumper at the 2 minute mark made the score 10-2. Accelerated's Marc Washington answered with a 3 pointer closing it to 10-5.

Summitt led 13-5 at the half.
In the second hald both ersecond half, both teams settled down. Summit led 22-14 at the 3 minte mark but a Billy Ferraro jumper made it 22-16. Summit hung on to win and stay alive in the Leona conference race. Peoria lost their seond straight game. Danny Saucedo led all scorers with 9 points.

8:30 PM
West Phoenix (1-4) 29 vs. Maya (0-3) 20

LEONA CONFERENCE PREVIEW
BB06 Ocotillo coaches huddle 450
Defending champion Ocotillo High School huddles up
Here's a look at the 2007 Leona Conference and it's players, of course in no particular order.

OCOTILLO: A perennial power, the Gecko's are the defending champions and like last year, they are going to have to take the long road to earn their respect. Well coached, Ocotillo is one of the leagues first schools to actually get serious and scout their opponents. They also have player of the year canidate Tyrone Bruno. Krumrie & Berdica have to step it up on offense if the Ocotillo is to contend.

Top Players: Tyrone Bruno is a tough rebounder and great on defense. Bruce Berdica, Levi Lottis, Dante Medina and Justin Kromrie have all shown flashes of potential. Danny Thomas is tough on the boards.

They can win the Conference if: Like last year, peak at the right time, Bruno gets on a roll and Abel Muzzie makes his annual treck down from the hills and enrolls before the roster MLK cutoff date.

They won't win the conference if: They can't get by Estrella or keep giving up easy lay ups.

THE BIG GAME: A showdown with #1 Estrella to open their conference season. Just what the doctor ordered.

ESTRELLA: We knew they would be good, but not this good. They play a swarming defense and pound the boards like no one else. They just seem to keep coming from everywhere. Well coached & well diciplined. If they have a fault, they miss too many layups, but on the flip, they usually get their own boards.

Top Players: Carl Crayton has slashed though defenders with ease. Football's player of the year Andre Daniels is dominating in yet another sport. Fellow gridders Alex Escabedo, Ray Almaguer, and Adrienne Leon are all dominating the boards and playing great on defense.

They will win the conference if: They can stay on their current pace and stay focused...or if a football game breaks out.

They won't win if: They loose focus and forget about team play.

THE BIG GAME: 19 January vs Peoria Accelerated. If they beat Ocotillo, they could wrap up the regular season title early.

PEORIA ACCELERATED: First impressions last, they played as a team and were spectacular on defense in their opener. The Leona conference is deep and they take on Summitt and Ocotillo in league play after the break along with a couple of tournaments. We'll know who they are around King Day....

Top players: Joseph De La Rosa opened with 13 points. Joe Watson, William Ferraro, Rudy Lupercio and Dominick Wetzel played well in the opener.

They will win the conference if: They are better than the team that showed up against West Phoenix.

They won't win if: They can't continue to play swarming defense.

THE BIG GAME: January 12th against Summitt. This is one huge for Peoria.

SUMMITT: They play great, but only when they are behind. Early season favorites become have been torched by JWJ's Josh Taylor, Westland's Jeremy Brown and Estrella's Andree Daniels in games they had chances toin and losses that shook them out of the rankings. Well coached and great defensively.

Key players: Miguel Alcanter is doing it on defense and has great range. Debraun Dixon and Daniel Saucdeo both have game. Erin Scraggins is one of the leagues top rebounders.

They will win the conference if: They can keep from falling apart against top competition.

They won't win if: If they keep amking costly turnovers at crunch time.

THE BIG GAME: 12 January vs Peoria Accelerated. Summitt can't afford to go 0-2 and they can't afford to loose another big one.

MAYA: Like JWJ, these guys are young, very young and will have to grow up yesterday. Getting footballer Joe Tucari has raised hopes as he leads the league in rebounding and is playing well on defense. Team hopes rest on his improvement and their own rapid development. They are in good hands with Coach K.

Key Players: Joe Tucari, Chris Valentine, George Galaviz, Dausey D'Andrade, Angel Madrid-Montes and Thomas Martinez.

They will win the conference if: Estrella and Ocotillo fall apart and all the planets lineup or if we can fast forward to next year.

They won't win if: They don't learn quick, fast and in a hurry.

THE BIG GAME: January 12th vs West Phoenix. Both are winless. A chance toget into the Leona conference race.

WEST PHOENIX: A real project in the works. They have a motivated coach and outstanding school support, but they have to learn to make the easy shots. They have had problems coming out in the second half, but it's something they can overcome. They can only get better.

Key players: Galindo, Richard Moreno

They will win the Leona Conference if: Let's just say it will take a lot, but it's possible.

They won't win if: If they keep on their current pace.

THE BIG GAME: January 12th vs Maya. West needs this one to show they belong.

Predicted order of finish.
1. Estrella
2. Ocotillo
3. Peoria Accelerated
4. Summitt
5. West Phoenix
6. Maya

Pre season all-conference: Tyrone Bruno (Ocotillo), Justin Krumrie (Ocotillo), Levi Leottis (Ocotillo), Carl Crayton (Estrella), Andre Daniels (Estrella), Adrienne Leon (Estrella), Joseph De La Rosa (Peoria Accelerated), Daniel Dial (Peoria Accelerated), Miguel Alcanter (Summitt), Daniel Saucdeo (Summitt), Debrown Dixon (Summitt), Joe Tucari (Maya), Galindo (West Phoenix), Jesus Cuevas (West Phoenix), Richard Moreno (West Phoenix)

(#4) PREMIER (6-2) 31, WESTLAND (2-2) 26

In the second half it was still back and back offensively with Westland leading 23-22 at the 6 minute mark. Poor free throw shooting on Premier's part kept them from taking a bigger lead, but still they led 24-23 at the 4:40 mark. PREMIER GETS BY JEFFERSON
BB06 Bobby Hendrix
Thomas Jefferson's Bobby Hendrix scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds
PREMIER 37, THOMAS JEFFERSON 36
This was a good one. In a battle for first place in the I-10 conference, Premier had to start without two of it's star players, Marciel tarver and Alphonso Lowe. Both teams traded baskets as the score was tied at 11 with 4:30 left in the first half. tarver and Lowe entered the game at that point and Premier jumper out to a 15-11 lead, but Jefferson fought back trailed 14-15 at halftime.

In the second half, Premier broke away twice leading by 3, but Jefferson kept answering back and wer behind 23-20 at the 10 minute mark. With 3 minutes left, Jefferson's #12 tied it at 29 with a jump hook and they took the lead with 26 seconds left, 32-31. Jefferson had a chance to extend their lead, but missed 3 free throws with 19 seconds left. Premier also had probelms at he line missing a chance to tie it with 9 seconds left and # 8 sank a free throw that seemed to roll on the rim forever before it sank as the crowd erupted in cheer. Time expired and the game went into overtime.

In overtime Pat Haney's 3 pointer gave Premier a 35-31 lead. Jefferson's Bobby Hendrix answered with a layup, 35-34 Premier. In the end, Jefferson failed to convert multiple opportunities at the free throw line. Ironically it was Premiers Haney who sealed the win with...... clutch free throws.
