VERDE WINS BASKETBALL CROWN
2010 BB Andino vs Verde
Premier's Markel Andino tries to penatrate Verde defense

VERDE PARK WINS CITY, THEN LEAGUE TITLE

It was another good one.  And a lot at stake.  With player of the year & coach of the year voting the closest in league history, those titles were on the line.

Oh, and there is also a championship at stake.

Verde Park's Kaliffe Gentry's 9 points in the first half gave Verde a 19-18 lead.  James Tillman had 6 and Markel Andino 5.  In the second Hald, Premier came storning back and led 24-23.  Kaliffe Gentry heated up again and marked his fourth 5th pointer as Verde went on a 17-3 run, taking a 40-30 lead at the 2:35 mark of the second half.  The 3's kept on coming, making it impossible for Premier to close the gap.

Verde held on, kept running and won their first league basketball championship 50-41 over Public School League champion Premier, giving them both a football and a basketball championship, coach of the year and an MVP.

2010 HSBB Kaliffe vs Premier
MVP: Kaliffe Gentry saved his best game for last

Tuesday, February 16
IT'S PREMIER VS VERDE PARK FOR THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Last October, these two teams, featuring several of tonites playersplayed in the leagues most exciting playoff game ever, Verde Park came from behind, then held off a hard charging Premier high school in a 20-14 win.

But that was football.

Both are traditional football powerhouses, but it's hoop season and time for the two vastly different programs.

Premier has the leagues best record this year with two of those wins against Verde.  In their last meeting, The Titans big front court dominated the boards as Jamie Throton had an impressive return af an intury.  Hichum Lakdar was aslo trouble for Verde.  Their first matchup was an overtime thriller, but again, Premeirs big men wore down & slowed down Verde and the game was settled from the free throw line.

Verde Park has had its way with most of the other teams and they posses two of the leagues top scorerss in Mike Peru and Kaliffe Gentry, both first team All-AAC candidates.  They also have a banger of their own in Raheem Valasquez, a top rebounder and All-City selectee.

Both teams are full of surprises.  Verde brought up two key players form the leagues top JV squad, as did Premier.  But a key player may be newcomer Sheldon Logan, who after seeing limited action his previous three games, was unleashed.  Teamed with Player Of The Year candidate Markel Andino, they could easily match Verde's speed.

It's Go Time.

CHAMPIONSHIP THURSDAY: GIRLS TOURNAMENT CONTINUES, BOYS PSL & CITY SEMIFINAL TODAY

IT'S GO TIME AS TEAMS VIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

DEFENDING CHAMPION MAYA TAKES ON WESTLAND FOR THE GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

MAYA (6-0) vs WESTLAND (1-6) AT 630pm (at Garcia School: 27th avenue, south of Buckeye)

Unless Westland pulls off an upset, Maya high school's Lady Jaguars can be the fisrt two time Class A League champions by winning their second championship in 3 years.  Led by Margaret Laban, a favorite to win girls player of the year, Maya is unbeaten and has beaten Westland 3 times this season in cluding a 26-13 win two weeks ago.

Westland was winless in the regular season and suffered a few last minute losses, so they are considered far better than their record.  They had better be.  They would have to beat Maya tonite and again next Tuesday to pull off the biggest upset in league history.

AAAC CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

HOPE INTERNATIONAL (5-2) vs VERDE PARK (5-3) 7:10pm (at Garcia School: 27th avenue, south of Buckeye)

These two traditional rivals split the regular season.  In the first game Verde used a balanced scoring effort in a 42-37 win on opening night.  In their January matchup, defending champion Hope upended Verde Park 39-30.  A Hope win would put them in the championship for the second straight year.  Verde, in it's first year in the AAAC for basketball has already won the football crown for 2009.  This one is for the City Championship and the winner plays the Public School League champion on Tuesday night.

AAAC PUBLIC SCHOOL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

PREMIER (5-1) vs MAYA (1-6) 7:55pm  (at Garcia School: 27th avenue, south of Buckeye)

Premier seems to have it's Titans in order att he right time.  Player of the year favorite Markel Andino has proven he can carry the load if he needs to.  Speaking of loads, Premiers James Tillman, Jamie Thorton and Chris Robles seem to be over lingering injuries.  That could be a problem for Maya as these guys take up a lot of space in the pain and according to Coach Andre Nillo, total over 700 pounds.  The Jaguars will, however, counter that size with smart play and athleticism.  Player of the year candidate Warren Everett is the leagues leading rebounder and shot blocker.  Team-mate Robert Horn and Mike Edison are also good defenders and will not back down.  Both the coaches are among the leagues winningest and have won football and girls team titles.  Andre Nillo's boys won the hoop title in 2008.  Maya's Kronstedt took his boys to the championship last year as a bottom seed.  Both are finalist for 2010 Coach Of The Year.

The winner plays the City Champion on Tuesday.

WESTLAND FINALLY WINS ONE, A BIG ONE

GIRLS AAAC CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Westland 23, Premier 15

Westland outscored Premier 16-9 in the second half to avoid elimination and advance to the championship round of the girls 2010 tournament.  Elisa Hernaandez scored 14 points to lead Westland.  Mareshea Brooks had 8 rebounds and Beverly Hansen 6 as the Lady Scorpions dominated the boards.  Westland led 7-6 at the half.  Sabre Hughes led Premier with 8 pints.  Sier White had 5.

MAYA 31, Westland 27

Maya advances to the Public School League championship game after wearing donw a short handed Westland team.  Down 32-21, Westland gained its second win with under 30 seconds left to cut Maya's lead to 4 points.  Too little, too late.  A few fouls later, Maya moves on.

Warren Everett had a game high 17 points.  Eduardo Garnica & Manny Dyer combined for 20 points to lead Westland.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK KICKS OFF WITH GIRLS ELIMINATION ROUND AND PUBLIC SCHOOL LEAGUE BOYS SEMIFINAL

This is it.

All or nothing.  The run for the 2010 AAC crown starts with girls and boys elimination rounds beginning Tuesday night at Garcia school, located on 27th avenue, south of Buckeye road.  Games begin at 630.

Public School League Girls Semifinal

630pm: Westland vs Premier

Westland came to within a shot of an upset last week.  Premier showed some saavy, haging in there with two of their best players on the bench during crunch time.  Sier White got to watch from the bench as her team came through in the clutch last week in the double overtime win over the lady Scorpions.  Deana Brown, Sabre Huughes and Nellie Acosta hung tough and made plays when it counted.  Marshea Brooks had a big night for Westland, but will need help form her team mates if they are to advance.  The winner faces unbeated Maya in the championship game next Tuesday.

Public School League Boys Semifinal

710pm:  Maya vs Westland

Westland seems to have gotten it together as of late and may be peaking at the right time.  Eduardo Garnica & Julian Westmoreland had a chance to show their stuff at the all-star game.  Now they will need to come together with Matt Schatzabal and point guard Manny Dyer or they face an early exit.  Maya wont make it easy.  The Jaguars peaked last year in the playoffs and ended up in the championship game.  Westlands fast front court will face road blocks as Maya's Warren Everett and Robert Horne at shot blocking specialists and rebounding machines.   Val Ruvic and Xehul Destani have become great suooprt players.  If sharp shooting Big Mike Edison is on target, Westland could be in for a long night.  The winner takes on regular season PSL champ Premier on Thursday of the PSL championship.

PLAYOFFS BEGIN TODAY WITH TIPOFF OF GIRLS DOUBLE ELIMINATION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
2010 girls PHS vs WHS

Girls teams from Maya, Westland & Premier high schools match up today for the opening round of the AAAC League Championships.  The double elimination tournament starts with two games tonight at Garcia elementary school, located on 27th avenue, south of Buckeye.

The first game pits the # 2 seeded Premier Lady Titan against the #3 Westland Lady Scorpions.  Although talented with at least 3 returning players, Westland has come close, but has had a tough time posting a win.  Premier on the other hand is looking good and the defending champions hope to repeat.  The winner plays Maya in the second game following the boys All-star game.  The looser will play the looser of the second game. Game time is 6:30pm.

Top seed Maya won the title in 2008.  The Lady Jag's are unbeaten this season and it will be hard to change that.  They also have one of the leagues best scorers and one of the best defenders.

Also, like the boys, interested players will be welcone to join our showcase league following the season.  Workouts will be on Tuesdays, open gym games Thursdays at Kuban school, located on 31st ave & Sherman, a few blocks north of 31st & Buckeye.  Top players will have a chance to play on travel teams this March and possibly over the spring & summer.  See Coach Mo for details.

Hope's Casey Schauszenberger had a career night vs Westland

Tuesday, January 26 2010

6:00pm

Basketball 6:00 PM Verde Park HS JV vs. Maya HS JV
Basketball 6:40 PM Maya vs. Hope International

Hope's Casey Suffenbuger drilled Maya for 21 points last week and his team mates backed him up as they held off a late rally.  Last year's co-player of the year Joe Fields is still a go-to man and a rally killer with his clutch shooting.  Josh Taylor is still lingering and canmake big plays, but he's not the show stopper he one was.  Maya needs this one, going into the PSL tournament.  Remember, the Jaguars went to the championship last year as a bottom seed.  Coach K is working on something here.  Rebounding machine Warren Everett is 24 rebounds away from the league single season mark.

7:30pm Basketball 7:30 PM Westland HS JV vs. Verde Park HS JV
8:10pm

Basketball 8:10 PM Westland vs. Verde Park

Westland uis a mystery team,  They wont give the ball to two of the leagues best players i sure-firse all stars Eduardo Garnica & Julian Westmoreland , and for what?  They could challenge for the PSL, but as in football they dont get it.  Verde is on a mission. They have a legit championship program.  The only way to a title game is through Hope, and blowing by a confused Westland may get them there.

Hope Sweeps Westland & Maya, Suffenbuger scores 30, Maya's Everett a double-double
2010 BB Maya vs Hope 1

HOPE INTERNATIONAL 36, MAYA 31

Hope led most of the game and held off a late Jaguar rally to improve its record to 4-2. Casey Suffenbuger led all with 21 points.  Maya's Warren Everett had another double-double14 rebounds and 11 points.

THURSDAY'S MATCHUPS
2010 BB MAYA Everett
Maya's Warren Everett had 9 blocked shots vs Premier

Basketball 6:00 PM Hope International vs. Westland

Hope edged Westland in their last meeting 42-40.  Westland is fresh off a convincing win over previously unbeaten.  The Scorpions turned loose Julian Westmoreland, who scored at will on his way to a season high 25 point night.  Hope also is coming off a big win, downing rival Verde Park recently.  Casey Suffenbugerger and 2009 Co-players of the year Joe Fields & Josh Taylor seem to be getting in snce with the rest of the Dove's supporting cast.  I big game for both programs.

Basketball 7:00 PM Hope vs. Maya

A test for both.  Two of the leagues more athletic teams face off. Maya looked good until the last shot in their last outing.  They clearly outran Premier, but a buzzer shot took them out in the end.  Before that The Jaguars front court played step for step with the front line of the Titans.  Hope looks to be in sync as this is the last season for most of a group that has been together for 3 to 4 years.  Anything less than a championship would be unacceptable.

ALL GAMES SCHEDULED THURSDAY THE 22ND BETWEEN PREMIER & MAYA ARE CANCELLED.  NOT PLANS TO RESCHEDULE AT THIS TIME.

WESTLAND 41, PREMIER 25

Westland led 25-17 at the half, then held on to a 39-25 win over Premier.  Westland jumped out in front as Julian Westmoreland (25 points, 10 rebounds) took over the athletically for Westland to start the game and led a 10-0 run to hold off a Titan rally (they closed the score to 27-25 at one point).  Matt Schazabel's 3 pointer at the 3 minute mark started the run and stunned Premier.  Eduardo Garnica scored 10 for Westland.  Markel Andino led Premier with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

POST SEASON APPROACHES: PUBLIC SCHOOL LEAGUE ACTION HEATS UP THIS WEEK

GIRLS TEAMS, JV TEAMS, BOYS VARSITY TAKE OVER GARCIA GYM THE NEXT TWO WEEKS AS THE SEASON WINDS DOWN

GIRLS

Westlands girls, just like the boys, are a shot away from being in the drivers seat.  They have the talent and a few of them have been together the past couple of seasons.  Lindsey Reynolds, Elisa Hernandez and Marcia Brooks are three of the leagues top players.

Maya is unbeaten and led by player of the year candidate Margaret Leban and defensive stopper Shaniqua Everett.  Well coached, they also have the leagues best supporting cast.

Premier is the mystery team as several players have shown flashes of leadership, but the backcourt tandem of Sabre Hughes and Sier White are the teams most consistant players both offensively and defensively.

BOYS

This week and next Thursday school spirit & School Pride on the line as triple-header type schedules pit traditional rivals against each other with a lot at stake.

Playoff Seeding:  In actual league play, as of now, Premier is in first (2-0), Maya 1-1 & Westland 0-2.  A Premier win tonite can clinch at least a share, but its wide open right now.

The Titans are front runners as they are unbeaten (4-0) this year and have won their last two without two of there big guns on the floor.  Swingman Makel Andino has taken a leadership role and the rest of the roster has stepped it up, not to mention they have a loaded JV team.  When Jamie Thorton & James Tillman return, watch out.

Maya has been paced by a similar group and has just as much team speed and height.  More athletic, Maya also hosts a number of shot blockers led by Warren Evrett.  Evrett and Premiers Thorton & Tillman all average around 8 rebounds.  Big Michael Edison, amontg the leagues all-time scorers is a clutch shooter  in his own right.  Like Premier, Maya is rich in JV talent, so the future and the post season looks bright.

Westland, though 0-2/0-4, is no push over and won't be overlooked.  A shot here a,d a free throw there and they are 3-1 or better.  They have super-athletic swingman Julian Westmoreland, who is tough on both sides of the ball and emerging talent in Eduardo Garnecia on one hand and returning leadership in point guard Jamie Dwyer and sharpshooter Matt Shatzabel in the other.  Its time to get it together and gain some momentum before the conference tournement.

HOPE & VERDE PARK

Dr, Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde.  Hoss one & Hoss two.  Cash & Carry.  Run & Gun.  Rain Men.

Depends on who shows up.

Verde Park was a run-away favorite early in the season with an 9 man rotation that kept fresh, talented & fast waves, relentlesssly at unsuspection opponents.  Sharpshooters for three point land kept defenders off balance and a full court press that was suffocating to say the least made our 2009 football champs th eteam to beat.  But recent losses to Premier and defending champ Hope make these guys look more human.  But watch out, they are loaded.  Mike Peru has been tough to guard and is hugh on the boards and as a shot blocker.  Raheem Valesquez is one of the leagues elite rebounders and Kaliffe Gentry one of the top clutch shooters.  In fact, Verde is loaded with clutch shooters and standup defenders.

Hope International.  Midway through the season, the team that called Garcia home for most of the summer looked like they were falling apart.  A big win over Verde has seemingly changed their stride and a better attitude on the court has helped opverall play.  The more they whine, those worse they play, so coach Simpson has taken a "shut & play" approach that has seemed to work.  5th year senior Josh Taylor is still the boss but recent play by Casey Suffenbuger and the steady Joe Fields has the Doves eying another trophy.

One fact remains, one the winner of the city Championsip between Verde & Hopw can advance the the league championship.

Basketball 7:45 PM Westland vs. Premier

Westland has had tough luck this year period.  Two losses by two points, one by 5 and a buzzer shocker last week.  Westland's Julian Westmoreland has emerged as one of the leagues top athletes.  Premier is quietly just getting it done.  Two pivotal players are out with injuries(James Tillman & Jamie Thorton) but Coach Nillo is deep with talent.  Andre Andino, one the football leagues top players is running the show from the point.  He has 18 points in the win over Maya.  Andino and Ed Siqueros combined for 7 three pointers last week.

FIRST QUARTER ROUNDUP/REPORT CARDS

BEST TEAM

Verde Park.  At lest so far.  These guys just keep running.  It's like a track meet.  And then there are the 3's with deadly accuracy.  They force a lot of turnovers that result in multiple fast breaks.   Let see how they do now that everyone has seen them once.  Things change drastically in February.....

GAME ON!

The girls have "upped" their game.  Scoring is up and is at its highest in 5 years.  The skills sets have improved as well as free throw shooting.  The games have never been more enjoyable.  These girls should consider playing as a club team in the spring.  Ladies?  So far,

BIGGEST SURPRISE

After plaing all summer, defending champ Hope International was expected to be head & shoulders above all.  With a core group that has been together for 4 years and a title in hand, this was supposed to be easy.  But then again, their is not a weak link in this the most competetive season yet.

BLUE CHIPS

F or the girls, Premier's Sabre Hughes and Sier White have been a great tandem.  Maya's Margaret Leban is the leagues best ball handler and Shaniqua Everett gets better every week.  Westlands Lindsey Reynolds and Elisa Hernandez have been clutch scorers this season.  With the guys, so far it's been the year of the Big Man.  Verde is loaded and so far they have had multiple high scorers.  Mike Peru has been the leagues most consistant scorer.  Kaliffe Gentry burned teams with 3's and has drwn double coverage as of later. Premier's James Tillman has carried his team and before his injury, Jamie Thorton was the most dominant force in the paint.  Maya's Mike Edison is one of the leagues all-time scorers and has been a clutch shot for the Jaguars and a banger on the boards.  Westland's athletic swingman Julian Westmoreland is so far the top returning player and has carried a tough luck Scorpion that is beeter than it's record.  No one has singled them self out as the leader for Hope, but Josh Taylor came through in the clutch vs Westland.

COMING SOON:  JANAURY PREVIEW

Thursday, December 17
BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

Maya comes back, beats Westland

MAYA 38, WESTLAND 33 (OT)
Behind the play of 6'3 swingman Julian Westmoreland Westland was up 13-5 at the half.  Both teams

In the second half, Maya got its half court game going and jumped out to a 16-15 lead after Oinagi Anderson fed Warren Everett (8 points, 10 rebounds & four blocks) for a layup.  Westland responded and took a 22-18 lead at the 5 minute mark.

westland was up 3 and game over until Maya's Michael Edison sand a 3 putting the game into overtime 31 all.  Maya took over from there outscoring the scorpions 7-0 and led 38-33 with 17 seconds left. Westlands Westmoreland led all with 14 points.  He also had 6 rebounds.  Michael Edison led Maya in scoring with 11 points.

PREMIER  41, VERDE PARK  36 (OT)

Premier has done it from the line all season & they did it again to stay unbeaten in a win over Verde Park as the leagues top programs met.

Bigger, stronger Premier again dominated the boards and slowed run & gun Verde Park, limiting opportunities & shutting down multi 3 op's.

Tied at 26 with 2 minutes left, Premier went up 28-26 with 40 seconds left, then Verde's's #24 sank a 3.  Maya answered but then Verde answered with a clutch layup.  #21 hit a 3 with 4 seconds left to give Premier a 33-31 lead.  Just when it seemed the game was over, Mike Peru made a layup as time expired sending the game into overtime.

With 55 seconds left in overtime, Premier was up 39-36.  James Tillmon sank key free throws with 17 seconds left and secured the win for the Titans.

Thursday, December 17
Tonight's Matchups

All games at Garcia elementary school (27th ave south of Buckeye)

6:30 - MAYA (1-2) VS WESTLAND (0-2)
Maya has suffered both of it's losses to the leagues lead dawgs, Verde Park, but the did beat defending champ Hope International.  The losses to Verde were actually closer than the scores indicated if you consider Verde's unreal 3 point shooting percentage.  The Jaguars are solids, but a work in progress.

Their biggest hurdle vs Westland will be Westlands experience and the fact the Scorpains need a win.  Now.

Westland has lost twoheart breakers but return a nucleus that includes 3 year players Julian Westmoreland, Matt Schatzabel and Jamie Dwyer.  Key to the Scorpians hopes are the teams other talented players buying into the system.  The hunger & effort is there...they just need to finish.

7:15 - PREMIER (2-0) VS VERDE PARK (3-0)
Premier is dominating the boards and Verde has been unstoppable from three point land.  Both are well coached and both play defense.

Opened the season with a come from behind win over Hope.  They also swept football rival Maya.  THe sharp shooters from central Phoenix come ready to play and seem to adapt no matter what the flow.  Before you know it their fast break has taken you out of the game.

Premier can go up tempo also and are the leagues best from the free throw line.  Always big up frnt, they also have a fast & athletic backcourt.  In this battle of unbeatens, it could come down to backcourt play & who can get it done at the free throw line.

NOTES:

Our remaining games will be posted during the Holiday Break.  Our Gymnasiums will be unavailable.  Game nights are Tuesdays & Thursdays.  Any games you schedule on those days will effect what is available to you during the season.  Let Coach Mo know if you have any "blackout" dates due to testing or other school related activities.

The Girls Post Holiday tournament will be played on 11 Janaury

The Boys Holiday tournament will be played on MLK Day, January 18th

Taking off uniforms before shaking hands and unsportsmanlike behavior from the bench will result in ejection and a one game suspention.  Be respectful.  Respect the game.

The All Star game will consist of players chosen from the 3 public school league teams vs the two city league teams from Verde Park & Hope.  A AAC vs celebrities is also under consideration.  Since no one in our league can dunk except for Coach Mo & Coach Chase, we won't have a dunk contest.  Conduct will be weighed heavily in the selection process.

The girls all-stars will be discussed a a later time.  A game vs another league is under consideration as is a coed-all star game featuring girls & JV boys or a girls group vs the first place team. Coaches, I will need your input.

HOPE EDGES WESTLAND
2010 BB hOPE VS Westland

HOPE 44, WESTLAND 42

Back & forth form the tipoff as two teams, better than their winless records, battled to stay out of last place, in this the toughest AAAC season yet.  And it's only December.  Hope was viewed as the faster team, but it was Westland that set the pace early and Hope playing the half court game.  A Jeremy Grant layup gave Hope the lead at the half 28-26.

The game stayed close throughout the night.  In the end, Josha Taylor had two key steals to slow any Scorpion comeacks.  Taylor had 13 points, Joe Field 8, Xavier Twine & Casey Suffenbuger 6 each for Hope.  Julian Westmoreland led all scorers with 14 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs.  Matt Schatzebal had 8 and Ben Silene 7.

Tuesday, December 15
VEDER PARK STAYS UNBEATEN, DEFEATS MAYA
2010 BB Verde vs Maya II

VERDE PARK 48, MAYA 36

On the strength of three pointers, Maya was up 18-11 in the first half.  With under 3 minutes left, maya closed the gap and was down only 18-17 at the half.  In the second half, it was much of the same.  Maya kept it close at times, but Verde's 3 pointers and fast breaks made things difficult for the Jaguars.

Kalife Gentry led all scorers with 16 points.  He also had 6 rebounds.  Mike Peru added 14, Gabrial Luhon 9.  Onagi Anderson had 14 for Maya, Michael Edison 9.

JUNIOR VARSITY
VERDE PARK 27, MAYA 9

Spidey Torres scored 14 for Verde, Jordan Jackson & Terrance Gentry added 6 & 5 each.  Elias Rueda led Maya.

Tuesday, December 15
This Tuesday's matchups (click here for the calendar)

Basketball 6:00 PM WESTLAND (0-1) G vs. MAYA (1-0) (G)

Maya's girls got off to a good start, outlasting Premier, who beat Westland by a bucket.  A win puts Maya in the drivers seat and the top seed for the January Girls Holiday tournament when play resumes on the 12th after the break.  Laban and Everett were the scorers last week for Maya, while Westland is probably more balanced.

Basketball 6:40 PM Verde Park HS JV vs. Maya HS JV

A big matchup for a JV game.  Both have players that would start on other teams and will contribute in the playoffs.  Only time these guys wil see each other this season.

Basketball 7:15 PM Maya (0-1) vs. Verde Park (2-0)

Verde rained 3's on Maya last week in the Jag's season opener enrounte to a 58-42 win.  Kalife Gentry had 17 points and 5 of those 3's, most of which were unchallenged.  Mike Peru played well also and all of Verde contributed either by scoring or taking part in it's suffocating defense.  Except for a few glitches, Verde has shown no weaknesses this season.  They all play defense and all can shoot 3 pointers.  And they nver seem to stop running.  Maya is one of the leagues more talented teams.  Big Mike Edison has a presence last week (10 points & 7 rebounds), but the Jaguars offense never recovered for a 12-0 Verde run in the second.  Devonta Wilson 13 points  as well and could be a breakout player for Maya this season.

Basketball 8:15 PM Hope International (0-2 vs. Westland (0-1)

Westland looked good in a triple over time loss to Premier last week.  The bigger Titans simply wore the scorpians down the end.  Poor fast beark execution and free throw shooting didn't help.  One day the will realize they have on eof the leagues best pure shooters in Matt Schazabel and get him the ball at crunch time.  Like Schatzabel, point guard Emmanual Dwyer and Westmoreland have been around long enough to have had enough.  Its go time for Westland.  Like Westland, Hope has been together for a long time, some 5 years, and an 0-2 record is embarrasing for the defending champions.  Josh Taylor is a two time player of the year,   Jon Belford, Jeremy Grant and all the others are league mainstays.  The Doves even played in tournaments all summer.  You wouldn't know though the way they've been bickering & complaining while opponents run up & down the court.  0-3 would be two much to overcome.  Hey, somebody has to win tonite, huh?

Tuesday, December 8
PREMIER DOMINTATES BOARDS IN WIN OVER HOPE

PREMIER 44, HOPE 26

After a Jamie Thorton 3 point play, Premeir led 16-7 at the 6 minute mark.  Josh Taylor and Hope creeped back but James Tilman helped Premier keep a comfprtable 24-13 lead heading into the half.

The second half was all Premier.  The Titans went on a 11-0 run toi start the half.  The Trio of Hickam Lakdar, Thorton & Tillman dominated the boards and guard Markel Adino simply frustrated Hope Defenders.

Thorton led all scorers with 13 points, Andino added 12, Edwards Signeveros7 and Tillman 5.

Tuesday, December 8
LADY AAC & JV SCORES
2010 BB Maya vs Premier grils

MAYA 10, PREMIER 6

Laban and Everett did all the scoring for Maya.  Hughes & Martinez led Premier.

MAYA JV 8, PREMIER JV 7

Maya's Xavier Ybarra led all scorers with 5 points.  John Garner also played well. Mike Perez and Elias Rueda led Premier.

Tuesday, December 8
VERDE ROLLS ON, TAKES OUT MAYA
2010 BB Maya vs Verde jump ball

VERDE PARK 58, MAYA 42

Up 24-22 after a tight first half, Verde Park outgunned Maya 31-16 in the second half in Tuesday nights win over the Jaguars.  Both teams opened with pressing defenses, but Verde kept the half court press throughtout the game, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on fast break opportunities.  Verde was also hot from the three point territory.

Kalife Gentry hit a league record tying 5 three pointers and led all scorers with 17 points.  Mike Peru added 16 points and Jose Rojas 12 for Verde.  Waren Everett led Maya with 13 points, Mike Edison had 10, Roberet Horne 9.

Monday, December 7
Tuesdays Games
2010 BB Premier Girls line up
Next? Premier's girls take on Maya this Tuesday

MAYA VS VERDE PARK (1-0) at 6:15

Verde's football program has asserted itself as a league power, now they want in on basketball.  They got off to a good start beating defending league champion Hope International.  Coach Crossin's team is deep on talent, disciplined and battle tested.  Uli Luhon was solid in the win over Hope.  Gabrial Luhon, Madrid Lopez and other team mates contributed offensively and defensively.

Maya's Coach K returns 5 from last years team, including Big Mike Edison, footballs outstanding lineman and one heck of a post player.  Ray Vest, one of the leagues best ever rebounders, is also back. This is the season opener for Maya.

(LADY HOOPS) PREMIER (1-0) VS MAYA

Premier opened with a win over Westland.  Sabre Hughes and Seir White played well against a pesky Westland team.  Maya will be just as disciplined.

PREMIER (1-0) VS HOPE INTERNATIONAL (0-1)

Premier faces a Hope team that has something to prove after an opening night loss against rival Verde Park.  The Titans are once again loaded with talent and according to Coach Nillo, they have a front line that weighs around 700 plus pounds accross the front.  Headlined by football prospects Markel Andino, Jamie Thorton & Big James Tillman (Defensive player of the year), the Titans are deep all the way around.  They dominated the boards and at the free throw line against a talented Westland team in a triple overtime thriller.  They will have their work cut out for them against a fast, Hope International.

Hope has a nucleus that has been together for at least three years and a 5th year man in two time player of the year Josh Taylor.  His average has dropped significantly since his sophomore year, but that may be attributed to the accumulation of talent and maturity of his team- mates.  The Doves had a let down witht he game in hand vs Verde.  They can't a afford another vs a seemingly more talented Premier.

After a Jose Ross 3 pointer, Verde came out the second half and outscored  the Doves 9-3 in the first 7 minutes.

At the 4:39 mark it got interesting.    Kalife Gentry and Caey Swuaserberger traded 3's as the pace quikened.  Hope led 37-33.

At the 1:36 mark Madrd Lopez came off the bench, hit a 3 and Verde regained the lead 38-37.  Another big three pointer, Verde held on for the  42-47 win.  Uli Luhon led all scorers with 14 points.  Madrid Lopez and Gabrial Luhon added 8.  Casey Sshaufelberger led Hope with 8 points.

Note: Door fee is $3/adults, $1 for students & kids.  Questions?  contact us at coachmo@coachmo.com

Defending champion Hope International, playing as an Independent, tips off against fellow Independent Verde Park, home of the 2009 football champions.  These two go back a ways & this will be a great start to the season as independents, only one will qualify for march madness.  Hope played all summer, so a lot is expected.  Verde is known for its pressing defense and fast break offense.

Girls tip off at 7pm with Westland & Premier.  Westland returns key players for last years disappointing season as they were favored to win it all.  This year, Westland is in the same situation, and with returning starters, they have something to prove.  Premier is the defending champion and is always competetive.  Located down Indian school from each other, these two teams are natural rivals.

The last varsity game of the night involves Westland & Premier's boys teams.  Westlands season came to an abrupt end as they failed to score on the last possesion.  Most of these guys are back and are looking forward to turning things around this season.  With key returnees in Emannual Dyer and sharp shooting Matt Schatzabel, the Scorpions return their deepest squad yet.  Led by key returnee James Tillman, perennial contender Premier will be right back in the hunt.  Coach Nillo's squad may be deeper & faster than last season.  They will be tested tonite.

BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON OUTLOOK

BOYS

HOPE INTERNATIONAL: Pre-Season AAC Favorite.  Playing as a non-conference, independent this year.  They should be, some of these guys have been together for 5 years.  One problem, they have to get past Verde to qualify.

PREMIER:  Public school league favorite.  Coach Nillo isn't tipping hi hand, but we saw a 6'5" freshman enrolling recently and he returns a talented group that includes football's defensive player of the year James Tillmon.

VERDE PARK: Made the transition from Class B to Class A in football with phenominal results.  An Independent, like traditional rival Hope.  Football Coach of the Year Rodney Crosslin runs a great defense.  Says his team has put up 80 a game in Class B play.

MAYA:  Coach K has his Lou Holz woe with me hat on, but we know better.  These guys have a lot of talent and at least 5 returning players.

WESTLAND:  Fast & athletic.  Most of last years team is back.  That could be very good or very bad.

VERDE PARK WINS CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP

VERDE PARK 18, MAYA 16

In one of the leagues more exciting title games, Verde Park wins it's first Class A championship in a 18-16 win at La Parada Park, Maya's home field.  In what has become a huge rivalry, Verde Park mad key plays in a two minute 12-0 span they put them in the drivers seat after halftime.  The score was tied at 6 at the half.

Maya made two drives late in the second half, but dropped passes on well thrown balls runined any big gains.  Verde went into ball control and burned valuable time off the clock.

Maya won the Public School League regular season title for the second staight year.  Last season the Jaguars beat Verde in a thriller to win it's first championship.  Verde Park, a perennial Class B power for year, last won a championship in 2005.  Since then, they lost championship games in 2006 (loosing to PSL small school Jess Schwartz) & 2008.  They have played in the championship game in each of their two years in Class A.

Thu 11/5/09 4:45pm Maya (4-0-2) vs. Verde Park (4-1-1) La Parada Park (39th ave and Glendale Avenue)

2009 AAAC Championship

It's Maya vs Verde Park in a rematch of the 2008 title game.  Last year, Maya beat Verde in a double overtime thriller to win it's first championship.  After 3 city titles and a championship in 2005 (lost title games in 2006 & 2008), Verde Park is in its second year of Class A football and have been in the championship game both years.

Maya, in it's 4th title game, finished the season 4-0-2, pitching 3 shutouts, and only gave up 3 touchdowns this season.  After a tie in the season opener, the Jaguars dominated Verde and Verde Park 19-0.

Both teams have steadily improved since that matchup and have similar teams for the most part.  Both coaches are also well respected and are loaded with talent.  Both programs are perennial championship contenders.  This should be a good one.

MAYA SHUTS OUT WESTLAND, HEADING BACK TO TITLE GAME

MAYA 22, WESTLAND 0

On 2 of the first 3 plays Maya's Edgar Roldan sacked the Westland QB and on 4th down big Michael Edison got to him for a safety.  Maya then got the ball and moved the ball down field running and throwing until Alex DeLeon hit Raymond Vest for a 25 yard touchdown reception.

Maya converted on the 2 point conversion on a pass to RJ Lovett.

Both teams played stingy defense to finish the half.  10-0  Maya started with the ball in the second half and moved the ball down to the Westland 30 yard line when ALex DeLeon streaked down the sideline for a touchdown to make the score 16-0.

Maya then got the ball on downs and again moved it down field into territory and finished it off with an 30 RJ Lovett run.  Score 22-0.

Maya then got the ball on downs and moved it to the westland 40 when Alex DeLeon hit Aldo Acosta for a 40 yd touchdown pass.  28-0.

On the final Westland posession Ricardo Mendoza intercepted a pass for his 3rd of the year.

VERDE PARK COMES BACK, THEN HOLDS OFF PREMIER

VERDE PARK 20, PREMIER 14

In the leagues most exciting playoff game ever, Verde Park came from behind, then held off a hard charging Premier high school in a 20-14 win.  Down 7-6 at the half, Verde Park capitalized on turnvovers by turning them into two touchdowns.  A Late rally by Premier, led by Markel Adino, fell short.

The win puts Verde in the Class A championship for the 2nd straight year and for the 3rd time in 4 years including losses last year to Maya and in 2006 to Jess Schwartz.  Verde won the Class B championship in 2005.  The also appeared in Class B championship games in 2001& 2002.

Verde will play the winner of Monday's Maya vs Westland game for the league championship.

Saturday, October 24
Mon 11/2/09 4:45pm Maya vs. Westland La Parada Park (39th ave and Glendale Avenue)

Westland has nothing to loose, dangerous for a loaded Maya team that dares not look ahead to next week's championship game.

Maya thumped the Scorpions last week 34-0 and show no signs of slowing down.  The defending camps have the leagues best line and a trio of back including player of the year candidate RJ Lovette.  Lovette is the leagues top rusher, leading scorer and has had at least one 50+ yard TD run in each of Maya's game, probably a record there.  Mike Edison may be one of the leagues best linemen and his name has come up as a plyer of the year candate also as he dominates the line on both sides of the ball.  he even threw a 50 yard pass as a backup QB.

Quarterback Alex DeLeon as been superb since being handed the reigns a few weeks ago and has several good targets to aim at including Nick DeLeon, Eddie Sanchez, Devonte Wilson, Manny Dyer and Raymond Vest.  Westland is in a rebuilding year, obviously, but anything can happen at playoff time.

The winner has to face the winner or Verde vs Premier Thursday.

Saturday, October 24
Thu 10/29/09 4:45pm Verde Park vs. Premier Verde Park

Last week, Verde & Premier met for an anticipated slugfest, but it was Premier that was taken, 26-0.

Loaded with talent, Premier was the early season favorite.  The Titans won the championship in 2007 and looked to be headed that way again in 2009.  For some reason, player of the year candidate Markel Andino has shown no intrest in playing quarterback and the offense has sputtered.  With at least two blue chips at each position, Premier looks like the league sbest team on paper, but they were clearly outclassed by the smaller, younger and maybe faster Verde Park players.

Nothing has changed at Verde.  daring you to astop them, they run the same plays they've run the past 10 years and will only take what you give them in the air.  And yes, they can pass the ball.  Well rounded & well coached, another return to the championship will onlu add to the reputation they brought with them from small school Class B....perennail contenders.

VERDE PARK 26, PREMIER 0

at Verde Vark

In what was not a shock or surprise to Verde Park, was the upset of one of the top teams with an explosive offense, Premier. Verde behind QB Carlos Sanchez ran the ball as well as passed against Premier. For the second week in a row, Premier was shut down and did not score a point. Premier’s offense & defense struggled even with the return of their captain James “Too Tall” Tillmon as well as Markelle "Michael Vicks" Andino. Tre Sessions also tried to assist in stopping Verde Park’s offense.

Verde would jump on the board with an intersection returned for Touchdown by Rakim Gentry. 6-0. Later Verde would extend that lead with a TD pass from Carlos Sanchez to a diving Leo DeVarro. Two points conversion, good. 14-0. Verde would again add to its commanding lead by Carlos Sanchez TD to Sergio Torres after the fact that the play before Carlos Sanchez would find Leo DeVarro on a deep reception.

At halftime, Premier would find themselves in a hole again. 20-0. Markelle Andino would do his best to get his offense back into the game, finding target Xavier Ybarra several times as well as scrambling to get yards. But Verde would cease Markelle Andino’s efforts by stopping the speedster on a key 4th down play where Markelle tried to scamble for a 1st down & was caught by Leo DeVarro.

The second half was all Verde Park, again intersecting Premier, this time by Carlos Sanchez and returning 50 yards for a TD. Two points conversion was picked off by Markelle Andino. 26-0. The game would end with the defeat of Verde Park over Premier 26-0.

Verde behind its soft- spoken offensive line leader James Barnett would protect Carlos Sanchez the second half and not allow any sacks. O- Line proved to be the game’s MVPs… Rakim Gentry, James Barnett, Hector Nunoz.

After the game, Verde’s Coach Rodney had this to say…”The team came ready to work and to put pressure on the QB.” At the half he stressed not to let up and Verde did just that. Verde coach continued to say for the second half, “It was all about running the clock, like Premier, we are a good second half team too, also we just made simple passes.” Verde will be ready for the playoffs, Verde’s coach Rodney will prepare his team by his motto that has carried them this far…”Practice hard every game.”

Both teams meet again next week at Verde in the playoffs.

Thu 10/22/09 4:35pm Verde Park vs. Premier Verde Park

This one is for home field advantage.  Last year it was Verde that exposed Premier's weaknesses going into the playoff.  They played the Titans tough on the road two weeks ago, a win today will give them a home game for the first round, probably against Premier....again.

Verde, looking for a 3rd title appearance in 4 years, looked good last week vs an improving Westland.  The running game looks intact and their passing game is just as good as Premier's.

Premier has a bad game vs Maya last week.  Back to back lack luster performances, at home, has their season in jeopardy, so pride is on the line.  The Titans have a size advantage, a bit more team speed and they are simply older than Verde.

It's go time.

Thu 10/22/09 4:45pm Westland vs. Maya St. Paul Lutheran Church "THE DITCH"

These teams will more than likely play each other next week in the playoff's, so they will either play loose or go for it.

Westland is winless, but the playoffs will be like a second season and for the past few years, we've had at least one underdog in the championship.  Last year Verde was a longshot.

The Scorpions are playing the finale at home, always dangerous for a top seed like Maya.  Both teams ar eon opposite specrums of the standings.  Maya can have it's second unbeated regular season in 3 years.  Westland is trying to win it's first.

"The most anticipated game of the Year"
Premier...Maya.
Before the game, I talked with both coaches, Premier's Andre Nillo and Maya's John Kronstedt. Coach Nillo emphased his offense as his strong point while Coach Kronstedt confidence lies with his defense. As Coach
Kronstedt would joke " If Premier scores 21 points, I'll be scared."
The match up was set up "Offense vs Defense." Both teams features some future stars in the likes of Markelle "Michael Vicks" Andino, Alex " Smooth Brees" DeLeon, Ramond Vest, Xavier Ybarra, R.J. "Loves To Move" Lovett, Jacob Maestas and Michael "The Inventor" Edison. James "Too Tall" Tillmon was out with the flu.
Premier's Coach Nillo asked his team to focus for 1 hour and that hour never got started... Maya's QB "Smooth Brees" DeLeon started in on Premier's defense who was missing their captain "Too Tall" Tillmon who was out with the flu, with running all over the defense. "LOM" Lovett showcased why Maya needs to involve him more with his quick abilities to allude defenders. Lovett had a run where he shook so many defenders, they had to tackle the speedster. Maya would strike first with a TD pass from DeLeon. Extra point no good.
Premier's would start Xavier Ybarra at QB. Ybarra has played QB before and felt he could lead the once potent offense behind Andino to victory with the home crowd behind him. Maya's most pride possession, their defense proved otherwise. Maya's defense lead by its shy leader Michael "The Inventor" Edison. Edison would share with teammates Devonte Wilson and Carlos Perez his latest invention sacking Premier's QB a combined 6 times.
Premier's change at QB proved to detrimental to the team's chemistry. Premier's offense never got going. Ybarra spent most of the game running and not looking for his open receivers. While Maya's offense would strike again, this time by the feet of DeLeon who would take page out of Lovett's book, scrambling for a TD. Extra point no good.
Maya's defense showed they are ready to hold the number 1 seed into the playoffs and defense the title. Maya came complete by defensively frustrating Premier's offense and offensively pushing Premier's defense around.
Final score 12- 0, Maya.
Premier after the games show poor sportsmanship not to their opponent but to themselves. Being frustrated by the loss, started arguing and fighting amongst one another. Had Premier displayed the emotions they showed after the game, during the game, maybe I would be writing a different story.
To all the players of Premier, I say this to you. You have to learn to deal with adversity not only as a player but as a TEAM.
My advice to the players of Premier is simply, first, apologize to your family, your team and your coaches for your actions that were displayed. Secondly, learn what it means to be a team and not a bunch of individuals. Lastly, remember this, Winners don't wait for chances, They Take Them!!
Until next time, see you on "Any Given Thursday."

VERDE PARK 19, WESTLAND 0

Verde Park shuts out Westland in the Ditch to set up a big game vs Premier for home field advantage in the playoffs.

Wednesday, October 14
Thu 10/15/09 4:45pm Premier (2-0-2) vs. Maya (2-0-2) Nillo Park (Western Area Regional Park) 83rd Avenue and Bethany

Except for tie games with each other and Verde, both teams are unbeaten.  Maya beat Verde Park easily, Premier had problems with them.  On film and on paper, Premier looked like the class of the league, until last week.  A smaller, stubborn Verde team gave them problems on both sides of the ball.  Premier did manage to shut down the running game, and that is what kept Verde from moving the ball into scoring position twice in the second half.  The Titans may also have the most depth in skill positions players and linemen along with a pretty good mobile quarterback.  They also have great team speed.

Maya has only lost 1 of it's last 15 regular season games.  Maya handles most of it's business on the ground.  They may have the leagues best tandem at running back and a player of the year Canidate in RJ Lovette.  He's been consistant and is probably the leagues top breakaway runner.  Like Premier, Maya is also deep at the skill positions and can throw the ball if they want to.  The Jaguars have a deep line that seems to wear teams down, forcing teams to make mistakes late in the game where Maya ends up with a win or a tie.  Or another championship.

Wednesday, October 14
Thu 10/15/09 4:45pm Westland (0-4) vs. Verde Park (1-1-2) St. Paul Lutheran Church "THE DITCH"

On the outside it looks like two second tier teams are just playing for pride, but on the other side of the coin, there is a lot at stake here.

Its evident that once a league power, Westland has fallen on hard times, but opposing coaches have praised the effort of their line play.  The Scorpions usuually start well, but wear down as the game goes on mostly because the defense is on the field too long.  However, according to Coach K from Maya, they have recently shown signs of life and that can be dangerous for foes as they head into the playoffs as a talented team with nothing to loose.  Plus they are at home for their last two games.

Verde Park has played .500 ball since moving up a class and went to the championship game in their first year of league play.  Not enough in Verde land as they dominated Class B and made several title appearance in the past 7 years.  Only championships count here.  A young team with a quick line, they will be a player if the looser of Maya vs Premier falters down the stretch.  Verde played well against first place Premierlast week with a decent passing game but had a hard time running the ball once they crossed midfield.  Westland presents a similar problem with a large line and athletes in the secondary.  This team can't get caught looking ahead to next week.

VERDE PARK 6, PREMIER 6

On paper, Premier appeared to be too much for Verde Park to match up. Premier featured Markelle Andino at quarterback. M. Andino early on displayed his abilities to run and pass against Verde's defense. Scoring on a pass to another talented youngster who needs no introduction, James "Too Tall" Tillmon. Extra point no good. The two would later switch roles when Tillmon went to the wildcat style offense and hit M. Andino on a deep pass.

Premier defense looked good and sharp behind a newly added player Michael Eshevarria with, count them 4 sacks! Tillmon would get in the action as well adding 1 of his 2 sacks on the day.

Just when you thought the momentum was all Premier, here came Verde Park. Guillermo Barreras picked off M. Andino and Verde offense lead by quarterback Carlos Sanchez would run using rising prospect Jonathan Montoya with his quick feet, contributed to keeping pressure off Verde's quarterback Carlos Sanchez. C Sanchez has established a new target in WR Michael Peru, hitting the WR for a touchdown mid-way through the 1st half of play. Extra point was no go.

Premier and Verde Park rolled into the half tied 6-6.

Verde Park tried to kick the second half off with trickery by running a reverse that fell short of a gain. Later "Too Tall" Tillmon would blitz for a surprise sack, coming from the corner position to showcase his speed to Verde Park's qb C. Sanchez.

Both teams for most of the game was a stand- still battle with both sides unable to get an advantage on the other. With less than 2 minutes to play, Verde Park's G. Barreras would get a key defensive stop by getting M. Andino before getting a 1st down on a 4th down play. Verde Park defense managed to contained M. Andino most of the second half, sacking him 3 times and hurried him to several incomplete passes. While Premier's defense in the final minute struggle to contain a now mobile Verde Park's C. Sanchez who scrambled to get several key yards or hit his favorite target M. Peru. C. Sanchez showed great poise by utilizing the sideline and stopping the clock.

In the end, Premier's defense would wake up and lock down Verde Park's attempt to upset the favored team in the match up, ending the game deadlocked at 6-6. Both teams battled yesterday and proved "Any Given Thursday" can be anyone's game.

Coach Nillo: This is the fastest team I've ever had".

Premier is loaded.  At least 5 guys canmake plays at the skill positions and the leagues hottest quarterback in Markel Andino.  Big James Tillmon, Angel Carbajal, Jamie Thorton, Johnny Garner and Trey Sessions have all made multiple big plays this season.  All also play defense.  The line is anchored by Tillmon, Michael Echeverria, Jacob Maestas and a strong supporting cast and just as deep as the skill positions.  It's also their home opener.

Verde has to shake off an embassasing home loss to Maya.  Getting shut out at home is almost unheard of at Verde, but they are still in the hunt for a middle seed at the least.  Guillermo Barreras had 189 passing for two td's vs Westland, but none of that vs Maya, seemed to be developing at quarterback. Jordan Jackson Sergio Torres, Michael Peru, Gabrial Luhon & Terrance Gentry are their top play makers.  They also have a solid pass rush led by Rhakim Gentry, James Barnett and Juan Sandavol.  A good showing at Premier is mandatory as Verde will not sneak up on anyone this season.

MAYA DEFEATS WESTLAND

MAYA 36, WESTLAND 6

Maya rolls on in home victory or visiting Westland.  Maya Coach K says "Watch out, this team is getting better and they are better than the score".  Maya improves to 2-0-2 and has a hold on second place and an eye on a second straight top seed.

Westland's Coach, Diana Martin agreed, adding that "Manny Dyer ran about 50 yards.  Raul Hernandez did a great job at quarter back.  Our line also improved...."

Westlands defensive line is their strong suit

Tuesday nite football.  It's mid season and both teams are trying to set themselves up for the playoffs.  It's the first meeting of the year between these two and there is a lot at stake.

An improving Westland is hoping it's passing game can come together.  They have a good defensive line and a tenacious pass rush, battale tested after chasing around Premier's Andino twice this season.  Playing for pride, Westland needs a god showing because it could that they would see Maya in the playoffs first round.

Maya defense came up big at Verde Park last week and Alex Deleon had a big day with a TD pass and a key interception.  Nick DeLeon had a good game at running back and Carlos Perez had two big sacks.  Second place Maya needs this win to have a shot at the regular season title and a first seed.

PREMIER 32, WESTLAND 0

Talented and fast, Premier goes up 21-0 at the half and cruises to victory.  The game was deadlocked until midway through the first half as Westland's defensive line gave Premier fits.  The Titans returned the favor as their line made life touch on Westland quarterbacks.  Two Adino touchdown passes and a 50 yard run off tackle put Premier up.Premier hosts Verde Park next week, then a rematch with Maya at home on the 15th.  Westland is at Maya next week.

MAYA 19, VERDE PARK 0

Maya goes into Verde Park and spanks last years runners upon the road. Verde never recovered from early turnovers and it was downhill from there in a rare home losss.  Maya is at Westland next week.  Verde travels to first place Premier.

The last time these two teams met the game was filled with dropped passes & hugh defensives stops, the game would altimately end in dead lock, 6-6.
This time both team showed up, ready to play..
Verde won the coin toss & that was as far as it went. Maya went in a different direction for their quarterback & introducted Alex "the showstopper" De Leon. He displayed great abilities to alude the skills defense of Verde. De Leon scrambled through out the game & one occasion found his target Aldo Acosta for the game's first score. Later in the second, once again De Leon was on the loose & threw a strike to receiver Ray Vest who spinted to the endzone for another Maya score.. Brother Nick De Leon took a page from his brother's book & shook & spun his way 50 yards for another Maya's score.
Just when you seen enough of  Alex De Leon, noope. He once again stopped the show by making a key interception on Verde that helped along with Carlos Perez impressive 2 sacks on Verde's quarterback to cap an impressive win & believe it will help to make a statment this season, here on out, they will come to play.

09 FF Maya Verde 1 Verde O WR
Ready: Verde's offense tuned up against Westland

Here we go again.

Verde-Maya "5".

Maya makes its first trip to Verde Park.  In what has become one of the leagues best rivalries, a game at Verde will dictate if it's a rivalry or just a stop or another trip to the championship for both teams.

Maya is is fresh off yet another tie game.  So far their stingy defense and experience line has sustained them.  Brealaway back RJ Lovette averages over 100 yards on the ground.  He's also scored twice from 60 yards out.  The Jaguar passing game is still a work in progress, but the talent is there.  Defensively, they have a great balance as they have one of the leagues best pas rushers in Michael Edison and a smart secondary.  They definitely showed and proved against explosive Premier.

Verde Park wants to restore the mystique they once had.  A place where they can't be beat.  It's been a while, but now would be the time.  As usual, they run inside & out and their passing game opened up last week against Westland.  They have two good quarterbacks, but last week, they were at their best, looking sharper than ever. Playing Verde Football.

This should be a good one.

Saturday, September 26
Thu 10/1/09 4:45pm Westland vs. Premier At the park on 83rd & Camelback (Address to the park on 83rd & Camelback pending)

These two met at "The Ditch" for the past few years, but Premier has moved on.  On their way, they did manage to beat Westland 26-0 as a going away gift.  Westland would like nothing better to return the favor at Premier's home opener.

This is a tale of two teams.  Westland is obviously rebuilding, but it's on the job training and the players see to be progressing.  Athletic and talented enough, the Scorpians hope to get it together starting now and carry on to the playoffs, much like a slow starting Verde Park did in 2008.

Premier is once again loaded.  With a revamped weight room and a reloaded roster, this may be Coach Nillo's fastest team ever.  Maybe the leagues fastest?  Nah, that would be Estrella's team of 2007.  But The Titans do boast one of the leagues best running games and the top quarterback in this early season.

Showtime starts at 4:45.

VERDE PARK BEATS WESTLAND

VERDE PARK 20, WESTLAND 0

Jordan Jackson's interception & return 50 yards deep in to Westland territory broke a deadlock, sparking Verde to a scoring drive and a shutout win over Westland.  Defenses dominated earlier, but after the interception the home team (Verde) began to separate themselves.

Play By Play

Verde Park having won the coin toss decided to begin the game playing defense and quickly dispensed of Westland’s first possession with  aggressive defense. On Verde Parks'

first two possessions no yards were gained, but on third and twenty QB- Guillermo quickly hit Jordan Jackson on the left side of the field for 10yds which he turned into a 40yd gain

giving them a new set of downs, Westland tighten their defense and forces fourth down, QB Guillermo hit Sergio Taurus for a deep pass of 45yds and he took it all the way for a

quick touchdown. Verde's Guillermo found Terrance for the one point conversion. Westland took over down a touchdown but Verde defensive line was quick and J. Sandoval sacked

the QB for a loss of 7yds and with three minutes to the half Westland took a timeout to try and get things going with their last possession of the half.  However, Verde Park continued

to apply quick, persistent defense and returned the ball to their offense with time management the half ended with Verde 7 vs Westland 0.

After Verde Park first possession being a sack of 8yds by Westland’s #23, QB Guillermo began to move the offense with a pass of 11yds to Gabriel, QB keeper of 15yds finding

themselves at first and goal.  On second and goal Verde Parks Guillermo was sacked by Westland’s Red for a loss of 11yds, which turned the ball over to Westland. For the next three

possessions the ball went back and forth with out either team finding the end zone but a lot of time coming off the clock. With 3:10 left to the end of the game Verde Park stepped it up

and on first and twenty QB Jonathan on keeper ran for 18yds setting up a short second and twenty.  QB Guillermo hit Gabriel on the right sideline for another 17yds and a new set of

downs. Starting to find a connection with his WR's Guillermo hit Michael Peru on the left sideline for another 12yd gain and with an open midfield found Terrance 9 more yds and on a

slant hit a streaking Michael Peru for a touchdown, but could not convert. Westland with 1;11 left could not score nor keep the ball out of Verde Parks hands and Verde took advantage

and with :20 left, Gabriel Lahan hit Leo for a 60yd touchdown and Guillermo found Jordan Jackson for the two point conversion. Verde Park (21) vs Westland (0).

MAYA & VERDE TIE ON OPENING DAY
09FF Maya Verde 1 Maya QB drops back

MAYA 6, VERDE PARK 6

The first AAC Kickoff classic between last seasons championship rivals Verde Park & Maya ends in a tie.  Both teams running games were in sync as both return key members from their lines and experienced quarterbacks.  On the other hand, recievers & defensive backs were a little rusty, dropping several passes & interceptions.

Until the last 3 minutes of the game & like last years championship, most of the battle took place between the 20s as both teams had problems getting into the red zone.  That changed in the last minites of the games as both teams responded and scored after turnovers.

Highlights

Verde began with the first possession of the game the QB Sanchez caught Maya sleeping on an option and found 18yds but on the third possession Maya's Edison sacked

Sanchez for a loss of 11yds, turning the ball over to Maya's QB - AJ for their first possession of the season.  It was clear Maya had speed on the outside and planned on using it.

First possession was a pitch right to RJ Lovette for 5yds, next pitch to RJ gained an additional 22yds given Maya the first first down of the new season.  Verde tightened up the defense

and began putting pressure on the offensive line of Maya quickly turning the ball back over to Verde's QB C. Sanchez. Verde having problems with the snap and quick defense of Maya

once again went four and out. Maya QB AJ from shotgun being chased by the tenacious defense of Verde hit #3 RJ Lovette for a long 22yds, and on third and 11 behind a determined

Maya offensive line RJ pushed ahead for 11yds and another first down.  On the next down AJ looking down field tried to hit a receiver and was picked off and returned for 12yds.

With the ball and :55 left to the half, Verde QB Sanchez from the shotgun tried to hit a wide receiver 30yds out and was intercepted by A. Delhome, he returned it for 18yds.

Maya had :38 and one time out before the half but could not put a score on the board.

Second half Maya started in I formation run behind strong blocking found 8yds, but two plays later Verde Park lulled Maya AJ into a seemingly open receiver 30yds

down field. By quickly jumping his route and intercepting the pass.  Verde Park after being pressure by Maya's defense line handed the ball back to Maya - QB AJ with an open

mid field tried to hit #32; who tipped it and it was caught by Edison for a gain of 42yds and a first down.  On the second possession AJ pitched left to RJ Lovette who ran it in for

a touchdown.  Maya couldn’t connect for the conversion.  Verde QB Sanchez feeling the pressure of time and defense at 4:30 left on fourth down hit WR for 45yds to keep them alive.

On first and goal QB C. Sanchez on play action rolled left and ran 11yds for Verde Parks tying touchdown, and they could not convert the extra point. With the ball being returned

back and forth for the next 4 minutes and neither team scoring the end of the game found both teams tied 6-6.

Hope Academy overcame a sluggish start and a tough Maya Jaguars team to win it's first league championships.  Unbeaten, and the regular season champs, Hope's athleticisim and timely shooting overcame any shortcommings

Tied at 13 in the second half, the teams were still stalemated until a timely three pointer by Maya out them up 18-15.  Maya held a 21-16 lead at one point until Hope stormed back to tied it behind 4 staight points from Josh Taylor.  Wilmont's corner shot put Hope up at the 2 minute mark and and he hit another to put Hope up 27-21.

Hope vs Maya in the boys championship game

6:45 at Garcia School

Top seed and unbeaten Hope Academy advanced to their first league title with a win over defending champion Premier.  A perennial contender and always stocked with talent, Premier went though the season without a loss.  Led by the leagues all-time leading scorer, Josh Taylor (leagues all time leading scorer) and Jasper Jones, the team has a deep supporting cast. The front line is extremely talented and 5 deep.  The back court is big and just as fast.  At times Taylor and Jones rotate at the point or shooter, creating mismatches.

Maya, younger, advanced after holding off a late charging Westland.  Maya flew below the radar most of the season and then, playing inspired basketball made their move in the playoffs.   Senior Thomas Martinez, an all-league football player, is the veteran leader of the group.  He can score and cover the oppositions best player.  Vest, Acost and Jimenez play supporting roles but are equally as important.

At one point, Hope seemed unbeatable and Maya was in the cellar.  Now it's go time!!

Maya vs Hope

Both teams lost close games last week.  Maya treed to come back but came up short vs Premier.  Hope lost a heart breaker to Westland, but rebounded in a win over Summit.  Both teams match up well with similar height and speed.

Premier vs Westland

Both teams are located just down the road from each other and this is one of the leagues top rivaliers.  Westland has a few player back from last year including three point specialist Matt Schatzabel.  Premier, as usual, is loaded with talent.  Center James Tillman was a beast on the boards last week and had 14 points.

Premier's James Tillman and Thomas Sykes combined for 20 points and 12 rebounds

The 2008 AAAC Boy's season got off to an interesting start.  Premier, looking more athletic and faster than ever held off a late charging Maya.  Westland beat Hope on a free throw.  Hope outlasted Summitt in the nightcap.  In all, it was one of our better opening nights.

WESTLAND 29, HOPE INTERNATIONAL 28

Manny Dyer's free throw with no time left on the clock kept Westland out of over time in a win over Hope.  Matt Shatzabel, one of the league all-time three point shooter, made 3 and scored  11 points for the Scorpions.  Matt also had a game high 5 rebounds.  Dyer was 4 of 7 at the free throw line and finished with 7 points.  Levi Hill led Hope with 10 points and 4 rebounds, Josh Taylor had  7 points and 3 steals.

Maya Wins 2008 Football Title
FF08 Martinez returns
Mr. Clutch:Thomas Martinez, second from left, returns one of his 5 interceptions

MAYA 6, VERDE PARK 0

3 time All-AAC defensive back Thomas Martinez had 5 interceptions and the scored the game winning touchdown in the thhird overtime, as Maya wins it's first AAC football championship.   Quarterback Jay Jay Tuafano stepped in and fired a 10 yard scoring toss on the games final play.  Martizez also had his hands on two more passes, but came up short, but Maya held off a relentless Verde Park team 6-0.

Fourth times the charm.  Maya had loss three other championship games.  Verde Park has played in 5, last winning in 2005.

As in last weeks semifinal, it was the secondaries that dictated the flow of the game, and it was a far fetched idea that the game would be won on a pass play.  Maya had 6 interceptions (Omar Acosta had won and nearly ran it back) and Verde Park had 6.  Both teams had decent running games, but defenses stiffened in the red zone, as both offenses were turned away at least twice on red zone scoring drives.

At the end of the second half, all-AAC running back Roy Grigsby appeared to be wearing down Verde's defense.  He ran for well over 100 yards, gaining most in the second half.  Verde's equalizer was a tremendous pass rush that shut down Maya's passing games.

Maya vs Verde at La Parada Park For The 2008 Title
Rodney 08
Coach Crosslin and Verde won a title in 2005

Maya 's Jaguar's, the regular season league champs take on Verde Park in the AAC's 6th championships game.  It's winner take all, a nice trophy and some neat medals... for the champion.  Whoever it may be.

Maya ran through the league with ease for the most part, to include a 14-6 win over Verde.  That was pretty much a different look for both teams.  Maya has used several different quaterbacks since.  Verde, has pretty much had a stable lineup and is vastly inproved since that October first meeting.

Maya has been in the championship before, last season and two years ago.  Verde went on a title run from 2004-2006, winning the Class B title in 2005.  They won 3 of 5 city championship appearances.

No former Class B Team has ever won a Class A championship.

Maya abd Verde both are loaded with Talent.  Verde uses two backs mainly with a young fullback.  All run well.  Verde also has the leagues best pair of recievers in Jordan Jackson & Gabrial Luhon.  Quarterback Guillermo Barrelas is the leagues top passer by far and leads in votes for player of the year.  Jackson & Luhon also give Verde a pretty tough secondary.  Maya is led by Roy Grigsby, easily the leagues leading rusher and another MVP canidate.  Skill players Omar Acosta, Joe Rodriquez and returning all AAC player Thomas Martinez are al staunch defenders and make up the leagues best secondary.  They effectively shut down the Verde air attack last month.

It will pretty much come down to the war in the trenches, just like last weeks semifinal. All-league nominees James Crosslin (Verde Park), Jose Romos (Verde Park), Chris Colburn (Maya) Rakim Gentry (Verde Park), Michael Edison (Maya) & Marcos Lopez (Verde Park) will all get a chance to prove who is all league on the line on Wednesday.

Word has it that scouts from the Copper League (Spring Adult Tackle Footbal) will be on hand to look for talent.

Arizona Cardinals starting guard Duece Lutui got his start as a amateur player before moving on to Scottsdale college, USC and the NFL.

VERDE ADVANCES

At "The Ditch"

VERDE PARK 7, WESTLAND 0

It was a hard fought win.  But it was a win.  In an old school "3 yards and a cloud of dust" run dominated semifinal, Verde Park scored on a reciever screen to advance to the championship game next week.

With two of the league best secondaries and the leagues top two defensive backs on patrol, neither team had much success tring to throw the ball.  Verde did, however, have an advantage in the passing game, but penalties nullified any significant gains.

In the end, both teams stood their groud and the defensive line on both squads determined the outcome.  A 50 yard sideline screen was the difference.

TEAMS GEAR UP FOR CHAMPIONSHIP RUN

Wed 11/3/08 430pm Verde Park (2-3) vs. Westland (2-2-1) At "The Ditch"

With Premier out of the picture, it comes down to a showdown at the Ditch and the winner gets to face regular season champion and top seed Maya.  Westland has had it's way in two wins with a combined scored of 36-18, a shut out and an embarrasing spanking of Verde in their own back yard.  The scorpians are looking for their first championship appearance since the 2006 loss to Thunderbird.  They have a good line and talented skill players on offense and defense with several players back from last year.

Verde has shown improvement from it's opening games and now are a legit contender, based on the fact that they have been to 4 championships, winning three.  They are also stacked with skill players includung the leagues top passer, running back and receiving tandem.  Add to that a good blocking scheme and  a scary pass rush.  Coach Crossin also has the leagues longest tenure as a head coach.

VERDE PARK 14, PREMIER 6

Highlights, big plays....

Premier won the toss and elected to start off on offense. While neither team could move the ball on two possessions each, Verde Park methodically came at Premier with the quarterback using  hard counts and running straight at the confused defense of Premier wearing them down until the fourth possession and 4 1/2 minutes left to the half.  Verde Park began to strike with the quarterback handing off for runs up the middle of 3yds, 3yds and once the defense was softened Verde passed for 16yds and a lot of clock time keeping themselves alive and the ball moving. Once Premier adjusted to the passing game, Verde's QB kept the ball and found effective runs of 7yds, 5yds and 8yds with 2min left in double I formation Verde QB handed off to the running back twice straight at defense for  6yds each time then Verde's QB over the middle found a receiver for the first touchdown of the game, then they proceeded to convert for an extra point.  Premier's QB receiving the ball with 1:19 left decided to pull the ball down and scrambled in the flat for 4yds, on the next play Premier's QB hit #69 - Cameron Carter midfield for a break away touchdown, but they failed to complete the conversion. Verde Park(7) vs. Premier(6)

At the beginning of the second half Verde Park picked up where they had left off, with the QB handing off and keeping the ball pushing a confused Premier team to scramble and adjust. Premier received the ball on turnovers but with consecutive bad snaps for a loss of 11yds the ball quickly returned to Verde.  It wasn't until the third possession of the second half that Verde once again used its patience and wore down and confused Premier for another touchdown and 1 point conversion. In a desperate move Premier QB launched the ball 28yds and was intercepted for the second time in the game.  This gave the ball back to Verde with 1:25 left and they used the clock to their advantage

Wed 10/22/08 430pm Verde Park (1-3) vs. Premier (2-2) at "The Ditch" (65th ave & Indian School)

Verde Park beat Premier at home 18-6 two weeks ago.  Now they must go on the road to takeon the Titans.  Premier, playing without oneof it's best players, beat Maya last week on the road, so they come in with some momentum and a motivated defense.  Verde lost a rare home game after being up 18-6, they fell to Westland for the second time this season.  A must win game for both as the looser could end up as the last seed when the bottom seed when the playoffs start in November.

Game Of The Week Play By Play: Maya beats Westland

MAYA 19, WESTLAND 6

Maya won the toss and deferred to the second half.  But Westland was unable to put together a drive and turned the ball over to Maya , who turned the opportunity into a touchdown by #88 - Aldo. The conversion was not completed and the ball returned again to Westland. Westland's offensive line, with sometimes 5-6 in the box gave the QB- Manny enough time to scramble for an air assaulting 35 yd pass. However, Maya's defensive player # 81 - Albert was able to catch Westland's Manny in the backfield for a loss of 3yds.  Westland trying to loosen the defensive onslaught of Maya tried running up the middle to no avail.  Going back to their passing game Westland's QB - Manny hit #23 - John, who out jumped Maya's defense for another 30yd grab and on 4th & goal Westland was able to tie the game at six, but failed on the conversion to take the lead. Maya received the ball with 2:24 left before halftime and decided to return to their hard running eating up time and taking out several Westland players.  Maya's QB on a swing pass to # 3 - Roy, running behind #11 - Jay Jay clearing the way found green for 25 yds.   On the next down, Westland's defensive player #60 - Luis read the screen and caught Maya after a 2 yd gain.  Maya returned to their passing and QB#11 connected w/# 7 for a 45yd touchdown and again no points on the conversion.  Westland receiving the ball with :53 before halftime, sensing the urgency QB - Manny scrambling hit #23 - John Valez for 18yds down the sideline.  Westland called a quick time out with :33, Westland's QB with a change in signal calling caught Maya's defense off guard and he hit #31 - Roman down the sideline for a quick 7yds but they were not able to beat the clock and time ran out with Maya(12) vs Westland (6).
Maya received the ball at the beginning of the 2nd half and using the brutalizing duo of RB #3 - Roy and #11 -Jay Jay clearing the field for 48yds down the right sideline then the left sideline. Softening up Westland's defense with two powerful runs Maya's QB# 11 found #88 - Aldo for an easy 12yd touchdown starting the half as it began. This time on the extra point attempt #11 hit #88 and found pay dirt and added another point. Westland returning from halftime quickly turned the ball back over to Maya, but Westland stepped up their defense and found themselves with 5min and the ball. Westland changed QB to Matt, who found a hard baptismal by Maya's defensive line, but on the next down moving quickly found a snoozing Maya defense and hit #23 - John down the sideline for 32yds. But with frustration and last effort ditch w/1:12 to go Westland's QB - Matt flung the ball wildly and was picked off by Maya's #3 for 40yds before loosing his flag, which stopped the touchdown.  Maya with :38 left ran the time off and held Westland off to win.. Maya(19) vs Westland(6).

Verde Ball: Verde Sticks To Offense, Beats Premier In Home Opener

VERDE PARK 18, PREMIER 6

Verde Park used it's usual run, pass, play action offense, in their win over Premier high school.  The same offense that helped them win three Class B state championships and 4 city titles.  The same offense that capitalizes on their opponents mistakes.  The same offense that was 0-2 going into this game.

Markel Akino had an interception early in the first half in what looked like a probable mismatch.  The very next play Jordan Jackson picked off his league leading 5th pass for Verde.  Soon afterwards Gabrial Luhan caught a TD pass after a play action fake to put Verde ahead early.

A few plays later, Jiles Austin caught a 30 yard pass after a Verde Player tipped the pass to tie the score.  From that point, both teams threatened a lot, but the both failed to capitalize.  Austin had another 35 yard catch late in the half, but Verde stopped Premier in the red zone.  Verde took control and drove the length of the field and cashed in on another Luhan touchdown catch to go up 12-6.  Verde held on to win 19-6.

WESTLAND AT MAYA

One of our longer rivalries rivalries has Westland (1-1) on the road against unbeaten Maya (2-0).  The teams boast the leagues biggest and most experienced lines.

Maya:  The Jaguars have the leagues best pass protection and return all-AAU quarterback Luis Guerrero and blue chip reciever/defensive back Thomas Martinez.  Add to that a solid running game and you have a team that simply keeps the ball.  An athletic & quick secondary adds balance to a solid defense.

Westland:  The Scorpian line corps gets a chance to show they are just as good, if not better, than Maya's.  Led by big thre year starter Esteban Flores, Westland has a ball control offense of their own.  Quarterback Roman Alvarado has connected in the clutch with tight end Matt Schtzabel and fleet WR/DB John Valez.  Westland's secondary may be the leagues quickest.

PREMIER AT VERDE PARK

This will be interesting as the Verde Park welcoming commitee get a visit from one of their own former stars, Premier quarterback Angel Carbajal.

Premier:  The Titan's lost a heart breaker in the opener against Maya.  Carbajal's relationship with his recievers is getting better.  It needs to, led by Jiles Austin (2007 offensive player of the year), Premier has a great group of fast skill players.  Protecting the quarterback has to be a priority.

Verde Park:  With midseason approaching, it's time for Verde can show that they are in the right league in the first half.  The patended Verde running game by committe has been at best, servicable. if they can get the passing game in gear watch out.  Solid on defense, Verde is always tough at home.

On A Mission: Coach K confers with QB Luis Guerrerro

MAYA 14, VERDE PARK 6

Maya won the toss and opted to receive. It took 2 1/2 minutes of Maya offense to score the first touchdown of the game. Maya using the very effective I-formation most of the game only using two sweeps #11 - Jay Jay of Maya was able to catch Verde's defense and connected w/#83. On the conversion Jay Jay hit #7 - Joe for an extra point. Verde Park received the ball and could not overcome the crushing defense of Maya. Maya's Offensive line was just as strong and protected the quarterback for a Jay Jay to Albert pass of 25 yds midfield which he quickly turned into another touchdown.  Once again #11 - Jay Jay found #7 - Joe for an extra point. Verde tried everything to get their first 1st down, but was no match for the oversized Maya defensive line.  They were caught in the backfield on two of the four possesions.  Making it hard to obtain a first down, the ball was once again turned over to Maya w/2 minutes left they tried to capitalize.  ButJay Jay was intercepted 25 yds down the field, breathing life and hope into Verde Park.  Verde finding the slant route a little effective moved the ball found 10 yds and 9 yds.  But it was not enough and the ball was Maya's once again w/ :06 left on the clock.  14(maya) - 0(verde)

Verde needing a quick strike at the beginning of the half tried running the ball straight at Maya gaining 24 yds and catching #44 - Thomas Verde outran Maya down the sideline for an air assaulting 40 yd touchdown. But was unable to convert the extra point. Maya, stunned was not able to have the same success as the first half as Verde began to see the plays unfolding in front of them and the ball was returned to Verde.  With new life and confidence, Verde Park tried another pass, while looking for an open receiver Verde's QB was steamrolled by Jay Jay of Maya for a loss of 6yds. On a sneak, catching the Maya defense and coaching staff off guard; Verde ran a center keeper ahead for 9 yds. But it ended there and the ball was returned to Maya who moved and controlled the clock for the next 7minutes before a turnover sent the ball back to Verde with :26 left before the end of the game.  Verde Parks quarterback doing what he had been all game scrambling to keep them alive found  receiver 16yds but it was just not enough.  14(maya) - 6(verde)

PREMIER 8, WESTLAND 7

Jiles Austin picked off a Westland pass early in the first hald and returned it 30 yards deep into Scorpion territory, but on the very next play John Velez intercepted a pass intended for Jiles.  These two (maybe the top two athletes in the league early in the season) went at it all game long.

Westland's running game was stalled, but they found gaps in the Titans defense as quarterback Roman Alvarado hit tight end Matt Schatzabel on key pass plays late in the first half.

In the second half, Westland continued to move the ball with short passes to Shatzabel and their slot backs.  Then just when Premier slowed the tight end pass, Alvarado connected with Velez on a 30 yard touchdown pass on a go route.  The extra point was good.

11 minutes into the second half, Premier's defense stiffened and stalled Westland's short passing game.  An interception by Cameron Carter put Premier in scoring position. After a short drive, Austin went 45yards on a run to make the score 7 to 6.  The two point conversion gave The Titans the lead with 7 minutes left.  The conversion, caught by Markel Anbino (from Angel Carbajal) proved to be the difference in the game as Westland was not able to capitalize on opportunities.

Maya's big, fast line was more than a match for Premier.  Now they take on Class A newcomer Verde Park.  Verde proved they could run as they established a decent run game against Westland.  The former Class B power will have to get the passing game going against a veteran Maya team.  No easy task on the road.  Maya is rough and ready.  Led by a a returning 3 year started at quarterback in Luis Guerrerro and an all-league reciever/defensive back Thomas Martinez.

WESTLAND 16, VERDE PARK 0

Westland opened their season with Class A new comer Verde Park, a former Class B power.  The smaller Verde Park team was able to get their running game going early, but in this league you need balance, and their line was outmanned.  Westland has at least 8 returning starters and their experience showed.    Westland was able to better mix run, pass and play action and their defenders stayed home for the most part.  John Velez intercepted a pass and on the next play caught a 25 yard TD pass from Matt Schatzabel.

 Highlights:

Westland:  Jessie Jurillo had a sack.  John Velez had an iterception.

Verde Park:  Jordan Jackson had an interception.

MAYA 8, PREMIER 0

Maya didn't like starting the season on the road, but the defending champs always host the runners up in the season opener.  In the kickoff classic's late game, Maya beat defending champion Premier at Premier's home field.  Both teams return key players but Maya's offensive & defensive lines controlled the game with power and finesse.  The game was pretty much a stalemate until Maya was able to cash in on a rushing touchdown late in the first half.  Another key in Maya's win was thier ability to run at will and run out the clock they did.  Double teaming deep threat Jiles Austin and keeping a steady rush on new Premier QB Angel Carbajal was another key factor.  The two did, however, connect on a 35 yard pass play early in the game, but the drive stalled.

Highlights:

Maya: Grigsby scored on a 5 yard run.  Maya's offensive live provided great pass protection.  The defensive line was relentless in pursuing Premier's quarterback.

Premier: Angel Carbajal had an intereption.

Premier 34, Thomas Jefferson 24

Jefferson jumped out early pressing Premier into costly errors.  The Titans recovered and outscored Jeferson 19-2 after being behind 5-1 and were up 20-9 at the 3 minute mark.  Premier led 22-12 at the half.  Premier refused to let the gap narow in the second half keeping a constant 10 point lead (28-18 with 3:44 remaining) as Jefferson continued to execute poorly, especially shooting and getting into their transition game.  They did however compete to the end of the game.

Rematch: Jefferson looks to complete a dream season vs rival Premier

Until this year, Jefferson had never beaten Premier.  In fact, it was Premier that escorted Jefferson out of the playoffs last season enroute to the I-10 title.  This year was a little different.  Jefferson completed a two year climb from self imposed probation enroute to becoming a top seed in this year's title game.  Led by Super Bowl ring bearer Derek Kennard ('96 Cowboys), Jefferson had played with a passion, especially on defense.

Premier has won more games than any team in league history.  Returning with the leagues most experienced team and fresh from a championship run last year, is one of the league's top basketball programs.  Coached by Andre Nillo, Premier could be the AAC's first school to title sweep as they have have already won the football championship.  Premier seems to have all the advantages with size, speed and saavy, and led by player of the year canidate Ryan Nieto-Whitaker (2007's football player of the year) and fellow football all-stars Stetson White and Giles Austin.

Jefferson Gets Back At Heritage

HERITAGE 34, JEFFERSON 29

In a replay of last week's game in which Heritage stopped Jefferson's drive for the regular season title, the two meet again in the second round of the AAC championship tournament.   Jefferson was down early, but a Tim Bellamy 3 pointer made it 6-5 at the 8 minute mark.  Bellamy followed that up with a layup drive and free throw that gave the Patriots the lead 8-6.  Heritage countered and the score was tied at 8 at the 6 minute mark.  Jefferson led by 17-12 at the half as Bellamy hit a 3 pointer as the buzzer sounded.

In the second half, Heritage came out flat while Jefferson applied a full court press as the Patriots took a 25-14 lead.  Heritage came alive late in the game closing the gap to 31-26 with 3 minutes left.   In the end it was too many turnovers and blown opportunities for Heritage, who at one time was down by only three.

Premier And Maya In A Thriller

Premier  45, Maya 42

Premier's taller athletic athletes took on Maya's quick, physical Jaguars in the first playoff game of the evening.  In a battle of two vastly improved teams, the score was tied at 9 at the 5 minute mark in what was up to that time a defensive stalemate.  At the 1:20 Mark, Maya surged ahead scoring 9 unanswered points and led 18-9 at the half.

In the second Half, Premier came stormung back outscoring Maya 15-2 and led by 4 at the 12:24 mark.  Ryan Nieto-Whitaker led the surge and took control as Maya fought back, with a 3 point play followed by a layup as Premier led 29-22 with 9:42 left.   Antoinio Delarosa's 3 pointer at the 7 minute mark closed the gap tp within 4, but Nieto-Whitaker followed with another clutch layup. Premier was up 34-25 with 4:33 to go.  A younger, stubborn Maya closed to within 4 three times and with 15 seconds left were down 41-39.  Premier broke away for an easy layup, but a foul put Antonio Delarosa on the line with three shots.  Keeping the game interesting, he converted all three and the game was a tight one for the duration.

 MAYA (G) vs. PREMIER (G)

Maya beat Premier in a low soring matchup before the break 9-6.  A Premier puts them up half a game.   Premier is fresh off a win over Westland.

Heritage Academy vs. Maya

Heritage is not playing up to their advanced billing, especially with 7 returning players not geting it done.  They will be playing with heavy hearts due to the loss of their school Patriarch and south Phoenix icon Mr. Tilford.  A win tonite and a win over Maya tonite and an upset of Jefferson could give them the league's regular season crown.

Maya is young and not was expected, but they are growing up in a hurry and get two talented players back from academic probation tonite, so this will be a different team, and a good game between two traditional rivals.  The looser win probably have to "play in" to get into the playoffs.

Wednesday, November 7
Premier Wins Football Title

Premier 13, Maya 0

Premier overcame a slow start and disciplinary issues that plagued the offense in the first half  to beat Maya, who suffered from similar issues 13-0.  In the first half, both teams struggled to move the ball by ground and by air.  Both quarterbacks did fair jobs running the ball, but both teams struggled to get past mid field.

Both school benched key players.  Premier disciplined two of it's star players by sitting them in the first half.  Maya had to bench a star player for the game.  That would prove fatal to their quest.

In the second half, Coach Nillo asked star wideout Ryan Nieto Whitaker to stay in and block.  That was truly the turning point of the game.  This gave Saldivar the precious extra time. Also note that two of his horses that sat out the first half came out running in the second.

Stetson White took the first play after halftime, a short pass, 60 yards from Chris Saldivar, for a touchdown as Premier took a 6-0 lead.  Jiles Austin made it 7-0 with an extra point conversion.  The teams traded a couple of possesions highlighted by the scrambling of Maya quarterback Luis Guerrerro.  Saldivar did the same for Premier.  Both had mixed results as both defenses adjusted quickly to the run.

Premier adjusted again.   Saldivar hit Austin on a short out, he turned upfield for a long run and Premier ended up on the Maya 2.  A few plays later, Austin leaped over Maya for his second TD reception from Saldivar to make it 13-0 .  Maya moved the ball well with time running out, actually making into the red zone.  Austin intercepted a deflected pass and it was pretty much over.

Premier and Maya to play for league championship

Premier high takes on Maya high in the AAC championship game Wednesday night at the Ditch.  The winner will take home their first league championship trophy.  It would also be the first boys title for Premier coach Andre Nillo or Maya coach Jon Kronsted.

Premier earned their title shot by going unbeaten this seaso in regular season play.  Along the way, Premier set a new league scoring record (221 points) and had 3 shutouts while giving up only 26 points.  The team is loaded with All-AAC nominees and is led by multi-talented defensive-back/offfensive talents Ryan Nieto-Whitaker, Jiles Austin and Stetson White.  Ad quarterback Chris Saldivar  and tight end/running back Nathaniel Dorsey and it's easy to see while they averaged 31 points per game.  Linemen Mikail Lopez, Zack Christian, Tony Meza, Joseph Johnson and Jacob Pueblo are among the leagues best.

Maya is led by wideout/defensive back Thomas Martinez, one of the leagues best and most reliable defensive backs.  He's also a big play threat at reciever.  Omar Acosta has proven to be just as good, making big plays n both sides of the ball all season.  They have made life easier for quarterback Luis Guerrerro, who struggle att he beginning of the season, but has since shown signs that made him an all league selection last year.  Running back Nathan Thomas gives Maya an added punch as he can also catch the ball.  Linemen Oscar Perez and Chris Colburn lead a younger, smaller, but effective line.

Thursday, November 1
Premier Over Omega, Championship Bound

Premier made it a clean sweep over Omega in a 25-0 win Thursday at "The Ditch".    Stetson White had two touchdown catches, one a spectacular pass-run combination, in a brilliant display on individual effort.   Quarterback Chris Saldivar scored on a 30 yard touchdown run and threw his third touchdown pass of the night to Nathaniel Dorsey.

Maya heads to the championship

Westland hung tough in the first half, but Maya proved too deep in the second as Maya beat Westland 24-6 to advance to the AAC championship game.

Maya opened the scoring with a Luis Gurrerro to Thomas Martinez touchdown pass.  After the teams traded possesions, Maya got a break after a Felix Villalobos interception was returned deep into Maya territory.   Westland quarterback Jayce Whelchel ran in for a score two plays later to tie the score at 6 each.  Maya answered on the very next play with a 80 yard pass play with Gurrerro throwing to Thomas Martinez.  Maya led 13-6 with 40 seconds in the half.  Martinez intercepted a pass, nearly scoring to end the half.

In the second half marching right down the field.  Guerrerro threw his third TD pass of the night to Dausey De'Andrade.  Westlands offens was pretty stagnant in the second half, mostly because of a fierce Maya pass rush.  With two minutes left, Maya locked the game up with a Nate Taylor TD run.

Martinez intercepted two passes for Maya, Acosta had a great day both ways.   Felix Villalobos and Jayce Whelchel had good games on offense and defense for Westland.

Championship Playoff Schedule
Wednesday, 31 October   Maya vs. Westland La Parada Park (39th ave and Glendale)

Maya beat Westland in both battles this season.  Westland was making a move in their last meeting, but miscues took them out of the game.  Maya has had a tough time winning a title in football, they will be focused.

Thursday, November 1   Premier vs. Omega Academy St. Paul Lutheran Church "THE DITCH"

Premier is easily the leagues class act putting up 30 a game and giving up only 4 touchdowns this season.  They are loaded with talent top to bottom.  Omega may be the most dangerous team in the league right now.  They are definitely not the team that lost a combined 83-12 in the first two outings.

Premier Finishes Season Unbeaten, Gets by Maya Again 18-6

The leagues two best teams tangle again and it was pretty much a replay of the prior meeting.  Premier went up early as Ryan Nieto-Whitaker scored on a short touchdown pass from Chris Saldivaro.  Maya answered with a great drive, highlighted by a long run by quarterback Luis Guerrerro, who then threw a short TD pass of his own to Omar Acosta. After that, it was pretty much a standoff.  The score was tied until Premier scored on a Joseph Williams blocked pass intercepted and run in for a touchdown by Mijail Lopez making the score 12-6.  Maya continued to hang in but multiple miscues between the quarterback and center and a series of strategic blitzes by Premier left Maya visibly shaken.  Nieto-Whitaker picked off another pass and wideout Jiles Austin went to work on a couple of big pass-run plays leading to another Premier score a pass from Saldivaro to Nathaniel Dorsey (18-6).  In doing so, Premier set a new league scoring mark with 188 points.

Thursday, October 25
Playoff seeds pretty much set, All AAC, Player of the year & "Dream Team" to be named this weekend

Playoff matchups

Premier vs Omega:  Premier blew Omega away in previous meetings, but this will be a "different O-Dog" they will be facing.  Motivated and vastly approved.  We think.

Maya vs Westland:  The leagues oldest  rivary continues.  Both have been repeat bridesmaids before and are looking for a title.  The game will be at Maya on Wednesday.

Player of the year Candidates:  Ryan Nieto-Whitaker (Premier), Tommy Martinez (Maya),  Jiles Austin (Premier)

Monday, October 22
Premier over Westland

Premier jumped out to a 30-2 halftime lead and cruised to a 39-2 win over Westland.  Premier's secondary proved too talented to allow passed.  Premier coach Andre Nillo admitted that Westland's secondary stepped up in the second half to slow his offense and force him into a ground game.

With the win, Premier set a league scoring record (170 for the season) set last year by Avondale Estrella (164) and they still have a game left.

Regular season finale's moved to Thursday at The Ditch
FF07 Premier postgame Andre

4pm

Westland vs. Omega Academy

Omega has improved by leaps and bounds the past two weeks, last week loosing a heartbreaker to Maya at Maya.  If the offense can catch up with the defense and they erase penaties (they lead the league), they will be tough in their probable playoff matchup vs Premier.  This Omega, Premier has not seen.  But Westland know how good Omega has become.  Westland had a very good secondary, so if Omega has any hope, they will have to keep the game close by running the ball.  The looser will get Premier at The Ditch in the first round.  The winner goes to Maya.

5pm

Premier vs. Maya

Premier has pretty much locked up first place, but Maya can force a statistical tie with an upset.  Premier is looking to be the first team in league history to score 200 points in a season.  Thier 34ppg average says they will.  Though Maya lost 20-6 in their last meeting, they were only down 6-0 in the first half, but Premier did not start quarterback Chris Saldivaro.  Premier's Stetson White, Jiles Austin and Ryan Nieto-Whitaker are the best  Last season Maya shut out Premier twice including a 24-0 win in the semi finals.  This could be a good one.

MAYA GETS BY TOUGHER OMEGA

Maya beats Omega 13-8, and the game was even closer than the score.  Maya's first toughdown was scored on a spectacular catch my Tommy Martinez, in the back of the endzone.  Martizez went on to make a couple of  more great catches but both Maya and Omega struggled on offense when in the other teams territory.  Add to that multiple penalties on both sides.  If not for the miscues, this would have been a high scoring affair.  Both teams will be tough to face in the playoffs.  Omega will probably draw Premier in the first round.
