Friday, May 15 MAY 14th--Senior Night Win Wraps Up The Regular Season With Kingo's Best Record The Falcons beat Roosevelt 7-2 on Senior Night. Ironically, the big hit was sophomore Katie's three-run triple in the fourth that broke open a 2-0 ball game, extending our lead to 5-0. Kaaren's typically solid pitching was backed with some nifty defense, including a nice running catch by Jennell in right, an ultra-quick shovel toss off a grounder by Maggie for a force at second, and a back-breaking double play the Falcons turned when Roosevelt tried to score a runner from second on a bunt----with runners on first and second and nobody out, Taylor jumped on the bunt up the first base line, whirled and threw a strike to Cat covering first to get the bunter, and Cat in turn nailed the lead runner at the plate for the double play. The win closed the books on the regular season with a 14-2 league record, 16-3 overall, both tops in Kingco 4A, and a perfect 10-0 record on our home field. It seems strange to recall now that as the season began, the word around Kingco was that WHS would be "rebuilding" this year. The Falcons "rebuilt" by outscoring their opponents 121 to 32 overall, with an average victory margin of almost 6 runs, and with all three losses coming by one run. Our pitching and defense rang up 6 shut-outs, held 4 other foes to 1 run, and held another 4 teams to 2 runs. Our offense, meanwhile, scored more than 5 runs in 12 of 19 games and as a matter of fact: 4 of the 5 games in which our opponants scored more than 2 runs were Falcon wins. After a 3-2 start we won 13 of our last 14 games. Now we know: The Falcons weren't "rebuilding"; they were RELOADING. After the game we honored the Class of '09: Kaaren Hatlen; Jennell Lottinville; Lindsay Sullivan; Zoe Thieman; Maggie Wagner.
These five young ladies put together an outstanding three-year record of achievement. Each lettered all three years and three of them were in the starting lineup every game they ever played at Woodinville High School. Through last night's game they had been part of 72 Falcon softball games and prevailed in 60 of them, a winning percentage of .886! They did not lose a game on their home field their senior season. As sophomores, they were part of a team that placed fifth at the state tournament. They made another trip to State last season as juniors, and of course have high hopes for a third straight trip this season. Their underclass team-mates honored them with gag gifts in a post-game presentation packed with laughs and tears. The booster club unveiled a permanent monument to ALL Woodinville Seniors, past, present and future, a "booster" poster that will hang forever in the right field corner, saying: WOODINVILLE SENIORS FOREVER FALCONS The class of '09 became the first of what will be many seniors to sign the poster, thus leaving a bit of themselves on the field to watch over future Woodinville ballclubs from "SENIOR CORNER". THANK YOU KAAREN, JENNELL, SULLY, ZO AND MAGS! ON TO STATE! GO FALCONS!
Wednesday, May 13 May 12th--Late Game Heroics Beat Lead Falcons Over Inglemoor The Falcons completed a season sweep over Inglemoor with a tough 3-0 win, all the runs coming in our last at-bat. Maria threw another gem, shutting out Inglemoor and striking out 10. Still, Inglemoor's pitcher had us shut out as well, at least heading into the top of the 7th. Katie's rbi single scored Lindsay and Jennell's two-out, two-run double iced it for us. Inglemoor went down in order in the bottom of the 7th and we had the win. Monday, May 11 May 11th---WE CLINCH THE DIVISION! On a blustery day at Lower Woodland Park, the Falcons' 7-2 win over Ballard clinched the Crown Division title with two games remaining in the regular season. Kaaren dominated the overmatched Ballard batters, yielding no earned runs and striking out 13. Zoe keyed a 4-run second inning with a 2-run single, and Katie drove in 2 more with a crush job triple in the fifth. Lindsay hit a 210-foot bomb directly into a stiff wind for a sacrifice fly in the 6th inning to add another run. It was obvious early that we would win the game, and some of the Falcon faithful diverted their attention to the adjacent field, where Roosevelt was battling Bothell to a standstill. When Roosevelt scored the walk-off game winner in the bottom of the seventh for the upset, the game-ending out against Ballard made Woodinville the CHAMPION of the Kingco 4A Crown Division. After completing the regular season this week, we'll play the champion of the Crest Division in a winner-to-State playoff. GO FALCONS! Saturday, May 9 MAY 8---FALCONS PREVAIL ON MOM'S NIGHT IN THE SEASON'S BIGGEST GAME On a warm Spring Friday evening in front of the season's largest crowd, celebrating Moms Appreciation Night, the Falcons pulled out the biggest, toughest, grittiest and most satisfying game of the season so far, beating Bothell 1-0. An estimated 300 people watched Maria's beautiful one-hit shutout make the victory possible. No Bothell baserunner got to third base and only one made it to second. Maria struck out 10 and walked only one. Bothell's only threat ended with two outs in the fifth and a runner on second, when Lindsay made a great stop of a hard grounder to her left, and ended the inning with a perfect throw to first. Meanwhile, Bothell's excellent pitcher was spinning her own three-hitter, with a perfect game through three innings. Cat broke up the perfect game and the no-no with a single in the 4th, and in the 5th Kaaren led off with a bomb double to the fence in right center. An out later, Maria got her over to third with a sharp grounder to the right side, and with two outs and the game on the line Jennell stepped in. After a six-pitch battle, Jennell used her great speed to easily beat out an infield hit to short, while Kaaren scored what turned out to the the game winner. Maria completely shut down Bothell the last two innings and the game was ours, allowing the Falcon Faithful to collectively exhale for the first time in two hours. Happy Mother's Day!
Friday, May 8 MAY 7TH---Falcons complete season sweep of Lake Washington As it has all season, Senior Leadership carried the day for the Falcons as they beat very talented Lake Washington for the second time this season, this time by a score of 5-3. SENIOR Kaaren pitched another gem, holding the Roos to 2 runs on 4 hits, with 8 strike outs. SENIOR Maggie singled to lead off our half of the first. SENIOR Zoe then drew a walk, as did Cat behind her to load the bases. SENIOR Lindsay singled to drive in Mags and Zoe, then Kaaren singled in Cat for a 3-0 lead. LW managed to get a run in the second inning, and pulled within one with another in the fifth. But we answered in the bottom of the fifth. Lindsay walked and Katie was hit by a pitch. Maria singled to right and Lindsay held at third, but when the right fielder's throw to second skipped off the fielder's mitt, Linds alertly scooted home. LW scored in the top of the sixth to again pull within one run, but again our seniors answered. Mags singled in the bottom of the inning and stole second. A wild pitch put her on third and Zoe's long sacrifice fly her brought home with an insurance run that let everyone breath just a bit easier. The top of the Roos order led off the last inning for them and their great slapper got on. But the next batter grounded to short, forcing an out at second, and the game ended when Taylor snared a line drive and doubled the runner at first base.
Saturday, May 2 May 1st---Falcons Beat Eastlake 7-1 The Falcons remained in first place in the Kingco Crown Division with a solid 7-1 win over Eastlake. Kaaren had another huge night at the plate with two singles and a homer, good for four RBI. Maggie went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored and Lindsay had a double and triple, a run scored and an RBI. Shelby added a single and a double and scored twice. Maria pitched a dominating game but it remained close until the sixth inning, when Shelby doubled, Maggie doubled, Lindsay tripled and Kaaren homered to put things well out of reach. Saturday, May 2 April 29---Falcons Win Over Garfield The Falcons beat an overmatched but courageous Garfield team 20-3. Linday and Kaaren homered and Dani crushed three hits. Saturday, May 2 April 27th---Falcons Beat Newport 9-0 on Dad's Night When the Falcons lose a game, woe unto their next foe. For the third time this season the Falcons followed a loss with a big win, this time defeating Newport 9-0 on Dad's Appreciation Night. Maria had three hits and three RBI, Maggie had three hits and two runs, and Kaaren had two hits and two runs for the Falcons. Maria gave up only three hits in and struck out 8. Saturday, May 2 April 24th--Falcons Lose 1-0 to Issaquah Two of Kingco's best pitchers locked up in a 10-inning pitching duel that finally ended when Issaquah scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 10th inning. Issaquah's McKenzie Voves held the formidable Falcon lineup to 5 hits in 10 innings, while Kaaren gave up only four hits. Zoe crushed a double to the fence in the first inning, and Maggie, Cat, Katie and Kaaren each had singles at various points, but the Falcons couldn't string anything together. Both teams battled and made some great defensive plays. Saturday, May 2 April 22nd---Falcon Bats Explode Against Lake Washington The Falcons scored 11 runs on 9 hits, including five extra-base knocks, to beat Lake Washington 11-6. After Maggie led off the game by reaching on an error and Zoe beat out an infield single, Cat hit a three-run line shot homer to right to key the Falcons' four-run first. Cat doubled in the second and came in on Lindsay's RBI ground out. Jennell had a two run double in the third and another RBI double in the 7th. Saturday, May 2 April 17th---Falcons Whip Roosevelt On the first truly sunny day of the Spring the Falcons beat Roosevelt 6-0 in a game featuring three Falcon triples. The Falcons scored in the first on a walk to Maggie, a stolen base, and a single by scary-hot Lindsay, who was in the midst of what ended up being a streak of ten consecutive hits. Maria and Zoe singled in the second inning and Maggie drove in Maria. Cat hit the first Falcon triple in the fifth and scored on Lindsay's single. Maggie later tripled in the sixth, adding to her own string of ten hits in twelve at-bats. And Lindsay tripled to lead off the seventh, scoring on Kaaren's second single of the day. Saturday, May 2 April 20th---Falcons Beat Redmond 2-1 The Falcons defeated Redmond 2-1 with another impressive pitching performance by Maria and timely hitting from Katie and Lindsay.
Maggie walked to lead off the first inning. Katie singled her in with two outs for our first run. Maria pitched a complete game and scattered six hits. Saturday, May 2 April 16th---Falcons Defeat Inglemoor The always-feisty Woodinville-Inglemoor rivalry produced another tough game, with the Falcons coming out on top 2-0. Maria pitched a complete-game shut-out, giving up only 3 hits, with 9 strikeouts and no walks. Maggie and Lindsay combined for both Falcon runs. Maggie doubled in the first and Lindsay singled her in. Mags singled in the sixth and Lindsay again knocked her in. Saturday, May 2 April 15th---Falcons Back On Track With Win Over Ballard The Falcons "got well" from the Bothell loss with a 17-0 win over Ballard. Maggie, Kaaren and Lindsay each had three hits. Lindsay drove in four runs, Kaaren drove in three, and Maggie drove in two. Kaaren pitched the complete game, striking out 7 in 5 innings. Saturday, May 2 April 14th---Falcons Lose to Bothell Maria pitched a tremendous game but the Bothell pitcher did likewise, and Falcons ended up losing a heart-breaker, 2-1. Cat drove in the Falcons' only run in the sixth inning with an infield hit that scored Shelby. Bothell scored a run in the fourth on a first-and-third steal of home, and the game winner in the bottom of the sixth.
Saturday, May 2 March 30th--Falcons Edge A Tough Skyline Team Skyline's crafty junkballer kept the Falcons off balance most of the evening, but some timely hitting and tough pitching in the clutch gave us a 4-3 win. The Falcons picked up one run in the first inning with a double by Maggie and an RBI single by Katie. We added another in the second when Kaaren singled and was knocked in by Jennell. In the fifth we added two more when Shelby singled, Maggie walked and Cat reached on an error. With the bases loaded Katie drew a walk to push in one run, then Lindsay hit a long sacrifice fly to score another. Things got tense in the sixth with a two-run bloop single by Skyline brought them within one run. After a stolen base put the tying run on second base, Maria got a soft pop up to second to end the inning. Kaaren and Maria had another solid "split" game, striking out 12 between them. Saturday, May 2 March 27--Tough Game Against Juanita Give the Falcons Their First Loss One pitch and a short fence was the difference as Juanita handed the Falcons their first loss of the season, 5-4. Kaaren got the Falcons off to a great start with a cannon-shot 3-run homer in the first inning. But in the bottom of the first, with two outs and the bases loaded, Juanita's batter hit a high fly ball that landed about 190 feet from home plate. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the right field fence at Juanita is 185 feet. Thus what was likely a long third out on any other field in Kingco became a grand slam for Juanita. The Falcons were able to tie the game late, but in the bottom of six Juanita pushed across the game winner to hand us our first loss of the season.
Saturday, May 2 March 23rd--Falcons Pick Up Second Win over Fife The Falcons beat Fife 8-2 to pick up their second win of the season. Kaaren and Maria combined for another pitching gem, scattering six hits between them and striking out 13. The Falcons split the game wide open with five second-inning runs, keyed by Kyleigh's big two-rbi single. Kaaren stayed hot at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two RBI. Katie went 2 for 4 with two RBI as well, and Maggie went 2 for 3. Saturday, May 2 March 17th--Falcons Beat Monroe in Season Opener The Falcons began their season with a 7-1 win over Monroe. Kaaren and Maria split the pitching duties, and combined for a one-hitter, striking out nine between them. Kaaren hit the first pitch she saw in 2009 over the left field fence in the second inning, for the Falcons' first run. Cat's two-run single spear-headed a six-run Falcon fifth inning that put the game away. Monday, March 16 Falcons 2009 Season Begins with Jamboree Wins
The 2009 Falcons made their season debut in the Jamboree Friday, March 13th, and luck was not a factor in two excellent showings. With lots of incoming talent to help our returning upperclass, the Falcons are hopeful of a solid season. |
