WHS Team and Individual State Meet History

Under construction..... 21'st century team and individual results...

2000   The first "ever" Woodland High School team since the history of the state cross country championships (1980's) to make it 15thfinished

2001   Women's Varsity Team finishes 10th in D1 at Woodward Park.

11/30/2002   Women's Varsity Team finishes 8th in D1 at Woodward Park on a overcast and coolish (60's) Fall day. Murietta Valley would win the team competition with 61 points while Laguna Creek's local Rachel Bryan would be the individual champion in 17:41. For Woodland and running her best race ever on the State Meet course, Melyndee Butterfield recorded the highest ever finish by a female Wolf at the state championships in 15th place with a time of 18:44 over the mostly flat 5K course. This time would be just 5 seconds shy of Laura Muller's all-time record for the Woodward circuit. Also finding her "peak" when it most counted, fellow junior, Mariya Townswick clocked in just one second behind Butterfield with a 18:45 16th place finish. Completing her third state championships in three years senior Megan Cearley, who had been voted "most valuable female runner in 2002", finished 50th in 19:17. The 4th runner for Woodland had only run in 5 meets over the season but made the state her best of herjunior year as Melissa Garcia finished 61st with a time just 10 seconds off her all time Woodward personal record. Rounding out the team score with 238 points was the 171st finish of sophomore Ana Estrada in 21:47. Freshman Brenda Rodriguez and Cassandra Ely would finish 179th and 192nd respectively to complete the team in times of 22:34 and 24:04. Ironically, Ms. Rodriquez would run her next three years in a Pioneer uniform while Ms. Ely would suffer a runner career ending injury while driving in the Woodland Fair Demolition Derby the following summer.

2003   Individual qualifier Melyndee Butterfield competes in D1 at Woodward Park.

11/26/2005   After not seeing a boys varsity team qualify and run in the Section championships for over 10 years, the squad of Russell Darling, Danny Ponticello, Max Bencomo, Mike Brian, Luke Koushmaro, Zack Gould and Jesse Foster finished 3rd behind winning team Del Campo and 2nd place team Del Oro in a very competitive SJS Championship race. The top two teams would qualify for the state championships. Thus, Russell Darling's 4th place effort give him an individual trip to Woodward Park without the luxury of his teammates. As only a junior, getting state meet experience was the goal and a finish of 79th in the D3 early morning run provided opportunity to run a very respectable time of 16:52 which is still the number 5 performance all time. Russell would not qualify in his senior year due to injury and illness.

2008   Individual Matt Murphy competes in D3 boys and Karen Ramming with Evie Borchard run in the girls D3 race.

2009   This chapter will be written soon!!
