Hero of the Day by Metallica
Friday, July 31
This is it. The final event of the season, the Tri County Championships. The Whales winter swim, practice and practice, perfecting starts and turns looking to earn a Whale Tail, a special swim cap and the title “Tri-County Qualifier”.
This season 19 Whales qualified in 43 events. Twelve Whale relays are qualified to compete in the championship on Saturday. The Girls 8&U Free & Medley and the Boys 8&U Free & Medley Relays will swim on Sunday in Session 3. Keep in mind that there is no “swimming up” in the championship meet.
Perspective: 36 teams compete in the championship. The top 12 spots will be fought over and typically filled by the “A” and “B” Division clubs. Places 13 through 18 are where the “C” and “D” Division teams will do battle. Since 2003, the Whales have been right in there fighting for their piece of the “second tier”. We have several events where there are TWO, THREE and even FOUR Whales competing in the same event! That’s exciting because more Whales in more lanes means …more POINTS! And so the Whales will be gunning for their rightful spot in the teens.

The number of 2009 qualifiers compares favorably to last year when the Whales qualified 26 swimmers in 46 events. The consistency in qualifying times testifies to the quality of our swim team program. Winter swimming, active parent involvement, a thriving Turtle Program and an experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic coaching staff all contribute to the Whales continued success. At the high school level, Whales now proudly swim for East, West, Eustace, and Cherokee. Whales have been selected to captain their high school teams. Let’s keep building the program, creating success, and supporting our team. Go Whales!
