Baseball isn't the only sport knee-deep in tournaments right now. Little League softball is also in full swing, and Wells-Ogunquit has a few teams getting involved.
The 11-12 year old All-Star team begins play in the District IV tournament on July 7 at 7:30 in Saco against the winner of a game between Lebanon and Sanford.
Chuck Tufts has coached some girls on the team for four summers in a row now, and he has a pretty good feel for where they stand.
"I think they're pretty good," Tufts said. "I've got a mixture of 12-year olds and some youth."
The team includes Chelsea Arabia, Reilly Boyle, Sydnie Bridges, Alison Duplisea, Julianne Fitzpatrick, Allison Furness, Sophie Lamb, Kelly Leger, Maddie Taylor, Kaitlyn Tufts, Nodine Webster, Amanda Woods and Stephanie Woods.
The team is managed by Chuck Tufts, and coached by Shannon Bridges and Skip Tuttle.
The squad has good experience. Seven of the 13 girls on the roster are 12-year olds and four of them have been playing for Chuck Tufts since they were 9. Those four are Tufts, Lamb, Arabia and Webster.
The pitching is deep. Chuck Tufts said he has four pitchers he can use. Last year, the team went 1-2 in the District IV tournament.
"Our pitching is a lot stronger this year than last year," Chuck Tufts said.
The top two in the rotation are Webster and Stephanie Woods, who is coming off a knee injury. They will be backed in the field by a solid team.
"I think I have good pitching plus really good defense," Chuck Tufts said.
In the field, Lamb calls a good game at catcher and Kaitlyn Tufts is strong at shortstop.
With the pitching and defense under control, it might come down to how the offense performs.
"It's a matter of if we can hit the other teams' fast pitchers," Chuck Tufts said.
One thing that might benefit the team, according to Chuck Tufts, is that some members of the squad also play soccer and basketball together. Those teams did well in their respective tournaments, and he hopes that carries over into the softball tournament.
"They all do well," Chuck Tufts said. "They all come with a smile and play hard."
There is also a 9-10 year old All-Star team. That roster includes Anna Furness, Takara McDermott, Sara Ring, Natalie Thurber, Alayna Iriana, Allyson O'brien, Taryn Lambert, Hannah Moody, Elizabeth Curtis, Keigan Drysdale, Hope Wolterbeek, Elizabeth Gilpatrick, Casi Haye and Sarah Strange.
The team is managed by Kelly O'brien. The squad's first game is July 9 in Biddeford against Shaker Valley.
