Josh Leininger was at a Waynesboro Tigers reunion in July when the idea hit him like a blitzing linebacker.

Leininger, a 26-year-old graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School, has brought semi-professional football back to Waynesboro after a 32-year layoff.

Leininger's grandfather, Bob Stouffer, played for the Waynesboro Tigers in the early 1970s before the team folded after the 1977 season. When the Tigers got together for a reunion over the summer, Leininger, who plays quarterback for the Chambersburg Cardinals, got the itch.

"I just figured why not?" Leininger said.

The 2009 version of the Tigers, coached by 2002 CASHS graduate Dustin Null, began practice in late November and is set to kick off a 10-game, Saturday night season on March 14 at the Frederick Outlaws. Waynesboro will be playing in the 20-team East Coast Football Association in the Western Division of the American Conference, along with Frederick, the Atlantic Coast Patriots, the Carroll County Cannons and the Valley Tigers.

The Tigers practice at Chambersburg Area Middle School and are currently in talks with Greencastle-Antrim High School and the Quincy Community Center about settling on a home field for games.

"It's a little more difficult than I thought it would be," said Leininger, who in addition to playing quarterback will also serve as offensive coordinator. "We have a $100 team fee to play and we did a ham sandwich

sale to raise umpire and league fees."

The Tigers have also rounded up a few sponsors, including Bob Stouffer's Stouffers Custom Cycles, Bikers Advocate and Graphics Universal.

There are several Tigers, including Leininger, who plan to also play for the Cardinals this year. Waynesboro's last regular season game is in late May, about the same time the Cardinals begin pre-season scrimmages for a season that typically runs July through September.

"I talked to (Cardinals assistant coach) Chad (Fauson) about it and he said it was kind of good, because we'd be getting more playing time and experience and we could use that when we go play for the Cardinals," Leininger said.

The Tigers currently have 33 players and are looking to get at least a dozen more, according to Leininger. Interested players may contact Leininger at 352-2926 or jleininger99@yahoo.com. The Tigers' team Web site is http://www.eteamz.com/waynesborotigers.
