Frequently Asked Questions
Who:
Can girls play football? Can Boys be Cheerleaders?
Yes - there are no "BOYS ONLY" or "GIRLS ONLY" rules with the SaberCats. Girls can play Football - and Boys can be Cheerleaders.
Are there tryouts?
No, not with the SaberCats- But other teams in the Cen-Cal league do have tryouts and cuts, but here it's first come first served. As long as you meet the age and weight requirements/restrictions - once you have signed up and paid your registration fees , and complete the fundraising requirements- you are a member of the SaberCat team!
Is the Sabercats part of Rec League?
No, There are 14 teams in the Cen-Cal league that are all competing to go and win the Superbowl trophy.
Will each child play equally?
No, each player is at a different skill level. As the season goes on, a child will improve and may go from 5 plays a game to playing 50. So encourage your child to always give 100%. The coaches are always watching to see who is improving and giving it their all.
Season:
How long is the SaberCats football season?
Our football season runs from our first official practice - 2009 is July 27th- until the Cen-Cal SuperBowl - which is usually the end of November or beginning of December
How many games will we play?
We start off the season at a round robin scrimmaging a few other teams in our league (usually near the end of August). Games are played each Saturday after that until the the start of playoffs. Each year is subject to change and we will have more definite answers closer to the season starting.
Practices:
When does football practice begin?
Official practices usually start the first Monday of August. We will probably host TWO 4 hour football clinics during the summer - the date will be announced when more information is known. Sometimes other clinics become available to us.. so watch for announcements!
When does Cheerleading practice start?
Cheer practice will start on the same day that football practices start unless otherwise contacted by the cheer coaches. We usually have a few cheer camps during the summer. Dates and times will be announced when more information is known
Where will practices be held?
Practice will be held at the Waterford High School practice field. This is for BOTH Football players AND Cheerleaders. We practice at the same time, at the same place. Our practices will change to the Waterford Baseball fields when lighting becomes an issue. There, we will have use of the field lights.
What days - times do we practice?
For the first 4 weeks - we practice Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. Until 8:00 p.m. This is both Football players AND Cheerleaders. After our first game - our practices cut down to 3 days a week, from 6-8 p.m. And coaches have the option to require an additional day for 1 hour - no pads (football players only)
Are practices mandatory?
Practices are mandatory. Missed practices may result in less playing time or cheerleaders not participating in the halftime performance. It is also required by the Cen-Cal league that all football players have 10 hours of conditioning practice before they are allowed to put on pads and have contact with other players.
Equipment:
What football equipment do I have to buy?
We supply practice pants, game pants, game jersey, pads, socks, helmet, girdle, 1 mouth guard (1st one is free - you can purchase additional ones from the snack bar - or equipment manager for $1. You can also purchase your own from a sports store). You will need to provide yourself with a good pair of football cleats (non-metal cleats) and any other protective gear you feel necessary.
Do I get to keep my game jersey?
We let you keep you game jersey as long as your parents or another family member or friend of your family volunteers FOUR hours. Either at the gate collecting money, in the snack bar, cleaning up before or after the games, or helping in some other way. We will have volunteer sheets circulating at the practices and at all SaberCat functions. Since the football players typically have to be at the games 2 hours before their game starts anyhow - this is the perfect time for the family to log in those volunteer hours.
Fundraising:
Do we have to participate in Team Fundraising?
Short answer: Yes... please!
Long answer: This is what TEAM and TEAMWORK is all about. We have to raise money throughout the year to offset our team costs so that we can keep our registration price down.
Our fundraisers this year will include:
SaberCats Program - We are asking that each football player sell $120 in advertisement spaces for our Football/Cheer program. The programs will be sold at the games for 10 dollars. Mila Romo ( 484-9507 mila@waterfordsabercats.com) and Debi Duron (852-2116 admin@waterfordsabercats.com) will have more information for you.
Cheer leaders have the option of selling candy and cookie dough to help pay for their uniforms.
Thank You!
But I'm a Cheerleader - why do I have to participate in Team Fundraising?
Everyone on the SaberCat team participates in Team Fundraising. Our team consists of Football players and Cheerleaders. Yes - Cheerleaders do have their own fundraising - but that is voluntary and is specifically to offset the cost of their uniforms - no part of that goes towards the team.
Other Sports:
I love playing soccer. Can I be on the Sabercats team and be on a soccer team at the same time?
No... Being a part of the Sabercats team is a big commitment. Your teammates depend on you to be at your best at every practice and every game. Too often soccer and football games/practices have conflicting schedules. It is best to make a choice between the two teams and give one team your all during that season.
Why do you need a copy of my Childs Birth Certificate and Report Card?
Our league requires that we have a copy of each player's government issued (city, state, or country) birthcertificate and most recent report card to prove each child age and grade. This will help resolve possible problems such as dishonest families and teams.
Where can I find a physical form?
