All good baseball seasons begin in the off-season. It is during this time when the fans have gone home and the ball-players have focused on new things that the success of future seasons takes shape. Such is the case here in Wantagh.

The Junior Varsity field behind the high school has seen many great competitions and countless games throughout the years. Children from the Wantagh Middle School and High School, as well as our own Wantagh Little League, have played on this field. Many of the residents in Wantagh can recall participating in challenging competitions that helped shape their lives. Year after year this field has provided a place where kids have learned about teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication. It has also hosted games where funds were raised for those in need. Constant use, the changing of the seasons, competition, time and weather has taken a toll on it. Flooding, worn out fences and beaten up areas where bases used to sit, is now how the field is remembered by many.

That all changed this month when The Wantagh Little League began its renovation of the field. For three years the Wantagh Little League raised funds through donations and clinics to bring this field back to its former glory. Once those funds were raised, the Wantagh Little League purchased new fences, a backstop, player benches, bleachers, storage sheds and 18 yards of cement! This past October the Board Members of Wantagh Little League dedicated their personal time to dismantling and removing the old backstop, benches and fences, and then erected a new field! The members of the board gave up many days to lay the cement for the new dugouts and build two new storage sheds. Electricity will be extended to the field for pumps to solve the flooding problems, new fencing has been erected and brand new clay is being laid to level the field. This entire renovation, which cost over $35,000 dollars, was done at the expense of the Wantagh Little League with NO COST to the school district.

When the kids take the field to play ball this spring they will do so on a field that is a safe and modern “First Class” facility ready to provide the memories and lessons others have enjoyed. Thank you Wantagh Little League for serving the children of our community in the best way possible, with a safe up to date facility which will serve the community for many years to come.
