Westford Academy 1/10/2009: The Waltham Boys and Girls Club Youth Wrestling Team’s 2009 season started off better than expected as they competed in their first meet of the season this past Saturday at Westford Academy. With the season expected to be a rebuilding season with 12 of the 18 participants being first year wrestlers, the rookies came in hungry and really impressed the coaching staff of Nick Cacciolfi, and WHS alums Brian Schoener, and Matt Chiem.
Participating in 6 team meet was Watertown, Winchester, Wayland, Waltham, Westford and Belmont. Each Waltham wrestler was able to wrestle between 3- 6 matches for the day. Two fourth grade newcomers, John Corbett, and Joseph Lindano had an outstanding day of wrestling as they were both victorious in most of their match ups. Returning wrestlers Laban Christenson, Michael Gaudet, Trevor Martin, Brendan Lydon, Charlie O’Donnell and Brandon Alteri all wrestled well in their first action of the year. First year 8th grade wrestlers Chris Alvarez, Nick Rogers also were impressive in their matches. The coaches all were very satisfied with the days result, and look forward to watching the team progress through the season.
The Waltham Youth Wrestling Team participates in the Big East Youth Wrestling League. The Big East League is comprised of over 65 youth wrestling teams in the state of Massachusetts. During the Month of January the team will wrestle in Saturday meets against other area youth teams. These meets build towards the end of the season tournaments that start off with the Big East Regional Tournament, and followed by the Big East Championships. All 65 teams will be in attendance at the Championship tournament. Top wrestlers in these meets can qualify for the Mass State, and New England Championships.
Next Meet: Saturday January 17, 2009 @ Waltham BGC 9:30 AM. Meet at the BGC @ 8:30 AM
Teams that will be attending are Dedham, Wayland, and Belmont.
