QSP magazine orders due!
It's that time of year again. QSP magazine orders are due to Bev Buckley by Oct 27 at the latest. In the giant white envelope that was handed out back in September, you need to return to Bev all the magazine order forms, the "Troop Report" form (with a summary of all the orders, prizes, money due), and one check from your troop for the total order (minus 20%) made out to "Waltham Service Unit." This year, we are able to input our troop's information directly into a database, which you can access here: http://gsorders.ashdonfarms.com/  Once you get there, you will need to log in. Please contact either Mary Ellen Smith (mersmith62@hotmail.com) or Kase Wilson at the Council office (617-482-1078 x. 206) for more information on logging in and to make sure your troop is listed in the Waltham SU database.

New GSC for 2007-2008
Holly Santangelo, our Girl Scout Coordinator (GSC) for the past 5 years (and for the past two years co-GSC with Peg Juppe), announced at our Leaders Dinner last week that we will have a new GSC for next year -- Elizabeth Bowling from Troop 1815. Thanks, Elizabeth, for volunteering! And thank you, Holly, for all your years of hard work helping to run our Service Unit!

News from Year End Leaders' Dinner
We had a great time at our year end Leaders Dinner at the Piccadilly Pub on Thursday, May 31. Here are the highlights:

*Holly Santangelo announced that Elizabeth Bowling will be our new GSC and Peg Juppe will work with her this year as co-GSC.
*We gave Holly a gift certificate to Russo's for being our GSC for the past 5 years.
*Bev Buckley will continue as our QSP chairwoman next year. Bev will also be our co-treasurer next year, along with Peg Juppe.
*Mary Ellen Smith will continue as the Service Unit's secretary.
*Andrea Baron is looking to train a new Town Cookie Chairperson for next year.
*Andrea Baron received a 10-yr pin (for 10 years of being in Girl Scouts as both a girl and a leader). Andrea also received a green leaf for completing 10 hrs of training this year. (The leaves go on your Owl pin. You get a green leaf for every 10 hrs of training. Once you complete 50 hrs, you turn in your green leaves for a silver leaf.)
*Tammy Graham received her Owl pin for completing Orientation, Basic Leadership, and Brownie Leader training.

Troop 1834 Goes on a Whale Watch Cruise
Salt's Tail
Troop 1834 recently went on a whale watch cruise and saw seven different humpback whales. The girls are working on the "Council's Own" Oceanography Junior badge and Cadette Interest Project (click here for more info). They went with a whale watch company out of Gloucester, Capt. Bill and Sons, who happens to offer a Girl Scout rate for the cruises ($15 a person). For more info on the humpback whales who return year after year to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, click here. It was a beautiful day and a great experience! Brownies Bear Gifts at Children's Hospital in Waltham
Troop 1850 recently donated bears that they made at Build-a-Bear to the radiology department at Children's Hospital in Waltham. What a wonderful service project and a great use of some of the troop's cookie money! Hospital emergency departments are also a great place to donate bears. May 26: Flags on Graves at Calvary Cemetery
If you're interested in helping place flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day, we're meeting at the High Street entrance to Calvary Cemetery on Saturday morning at 10 am. Just show up! The local veterans from Waltham will be there with plenty of flags. It usually takes about an hour to get all the flags out. (Click on "Locations" on the menu at the left for a map to the cemetery. Click on "Albums" for more pictures.)

Cookies for Troops Overseas
Cookies at Hanscom 1
Back in March, Andrea delivered 55 cases of Girl Scout cookies to Hanscom AFB, where volunteers from the base were putting together care packages that were sent to soldiers overseas. The room was filled with volunteers from the base who packed more than 700 boxes filled with candy, books, personal supplies, pens, paper, and of course, Girl Scout Cookies. Thanks to all of Patriots Trail we were able to bring close to 300 cases of cookies (3600 boxes) to Hanscom to distribute overseas. Andrea also shipped 20 other cases of cookies to soldiers from Waltham Girl Scouts. Here are some of Andrea's picture from Hanscom.
