Cookie Crunch! Jan. 10, 2010
"Cookie Crunch 2010" is our townwide cookie kickoff celebration at Great Hall on January 10, 2010, from 1 to 3:30 pm. Waltham Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to attend an afternoon of fun activities to help get this year's cookie season off to a great start. Girls will have a variety of stations to rotate through, playing a Cookie Trivia game, making Thank you cards for their customers and posters for their booth sales, running a pretend booth sale, and best of all, eating ice cream topped with crushed Girl Scout cookies. The cost is $3 for registered Girl Scouts. Leaders: You don't need to come as a troop, but we'd like a headcount (by Jan 4) of the number of girls from your troop who will be attending. The flyer and permission slip are available below. Please spread the word and help make this event a big success!

Annual Square Dance: Feb. 6, 2010
This year's annual Father-Daughter Square Dance will be held on Feb. 6, 2010, in Our Lady's Auditorium on Trapelo Road. This is one of our best-attended townwide events every year. Every girl should have a partner (if not her father then another caring adult). The dance starts promptly at 7 pm, so plan to get there a little early to check in. The cost is $5 per person and the proceeds go towards our Waltham Girl Scout Scholarship (given each year to a high school graduating Girl Scout). Bring a snack. Cold drinks will be provided. Western attire is encouraged! See the handout below:

Notes from Sept. 22 Leaders Mtg
Here's a recap of our first Leaders Meeting of the year, held on Sept. 22 at Cedar Hill. (Email Mary Ellen Smith if you have any questions about any of this mersmith62@hotmail.com):
~~~
We outlined our plans for townwide events for the year, open to Waltham GS of all ages (unless otherwise noted):
  • Annual Square Dance (Feb 6, at Our Lady's auditorium)
  • Winter Encampment (for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors: held on a Fri/Sat in Feb; date TBA)
  • Girl Scout Sunday (March 7; Science theme; run by Cadette Troop 71810)
  • Bridging and Awards Ceremony (held in May/June)
We talked about new townwide events:
  • Brownie Try-it workshop on a Sunday in Nov (run by Cadette Troop 71834 & Senior Troop 71815: "GirlSports" and one other Try-it TBA; for Brownies and 1st gr Daisies)
  • a Cookie Kickoff night in Jan (possibly an ice cream social-type thing with crushed cookies on top, possibly a recipe-with-cookies type affair, all Waltham GS and families; still lots to talk about with this one; we just brainstormed)
There were a lot of new leaders. Plympton has 4 troops now. The new leaders asked a lot of questions about everything, which was great.
 ~~~
We passed around a draft of this year's Troop Directory (and it's been emailed to leaders who couldn't make it to this meeting). We hope to have a final Troop Directory to hand out to everyone at our Oct. 14 Leaders Mtg.
~~~
QSP magazine sales and candy/candle sales are under way. This is a great way to earn money for your troop treasury early in the Girl Scout year. Beverly Buckley handed out packets/order forms for everyone. Call her if you want to participate (781-891-8247). Due back to her by Oct 23. All orders will be input online by the girl's themselves (or their parents). Contact Mary Ellen Smith with questions about the online order forms (mersmith62@hotmail.com).
~~~
Holly Williams, leader of Senior Troop 71815, is our new town registrar. Call her/email her with questions (hwilliams56@gmail.com or 781-647-0147). Early bird patches aren't in yet.
~~~
Kristin Perez, a Brownie leader at Plympton, is our new town Cookie Chairwoman. She will be contacting all leaders as we get closer to cookie season (which begins with training for Troop Cookie Managers on Nov. 30).
~~~
We had light refreshments and we shared some ideas (and supplies!) for several button crafts.
~~~
Check out the menu at the left for Service Team contacts, an updated Links page, ideas for service projects, and the Calendar for all scheduled events. See below for a list of all the Leaders Mtgs scheduled for the year.
Training for New and Experienced Leaders and Volunteers
New leaders need to take the following training:
(1) GSUSA online orientation
(2) GSEM Orientation (run by Debbie Seale for new Waltham leaders)
(3) Leadership Essentials
(4) Age-Appropriate Level Training (for leaders of Daisies, Brownies, etc.)
All experienced leaders are required to take the Leadership Essentials training this year. This training program will get everyone up to date on the new "Girl Scout Leadership Experience" that is being rolled out by GSUSA and GSEM. Brownies at the Try-it Workshop at Stonehurst
PaineEstate.E017
Jennifer Meader, the Director of Education at Stonehurst (the Robert Treat Paine Estate), hosted a Brownie Try-it workshop on Sept 15 and according to the handful of girls and leaders who were there, it was a lot of fun. The workshop began outdoors on "Whale Rock" (or "Glacier Rock") with Jennifer pointing out characteristics of the landscape and how that was incorporated into the design of the house. The girls then had a tour of the inside of the mansion, studied a floor plan, and created a truss similar to the iron truss that holds up a major part of the house. The workshop concluded with a trip up the servants' staircase all the way to the attic!
Click here for a link to their website: Stonehurst, the Robert Treat Paine Estate or contact Jennifer Meader (781-314-3290) for more information. Click on Locations on the menu at left for a map. Click on Photo Albums to see pictures from the workshop.
Girl Scout Science Sunday (March 2008)
Girl Scout Science Sunday
Girl Scout Science Sunday was a great success! We had 78 girls attend the event, which featured 6 hands-on science stations:
  • Float My Boat: Make a tinfoil boat with pennies as cargo
  • Eat Like a Bird: How do birds' beaks affect what they eat?
  • Stack 'em Up: Make a tall, strong tower of cups
  • Set It Straight: Balance a simple seesaw on a fulcrum with pennies as weights
  • Acids and Bases: Test simple liquids
  • I'm All Thumbs: Fun without using opposable thumbs
Special thanks to all the leaders who helped organize and run this event: Kathy Carey and Dawn Costorf (Float My Boat station), Fiona Pilette and Cindy Babstock (Eat Like a Bird), Elizabeth Bowling and Holly Williams (Stack 'em Up), Patty Campbell and Tammy Graham (Set It Straight), Rose Miller and Bobby Pellant (I'm All Thumbs), and Kathy Lindsay and Colleen McCretton (Acids & Bases). Thanks also to Lisa Thomas for creating the passport and  registering everyone, Judy Bisson for ordering the patches and getting all our paperwork done, and Peg Juppe for organizing the venue and running the overall event. The link to the origami website can be found here www.origami-club.com/en/ (and under Links, on the menu at left). Click on "Photo Albums" on the menu for more pictures.
Winter Encampment 2008
Quilling
Winter Encampment 2008 was a lot of fun! The Juniors earned four badges -- Frosty Fun, Art in 3D, United We Stand, and Dance. The Cadettes earned two badges -- American Patriotism and Paperworks. Thanks to Mayor Jeanette McCarthy for stopping by Friday night and talking to us about her life in government service. We learned a lot about how to handle the American flag, how to fold the flag, and how to retire the flag. The hand-sewn 34-star flag from 1861 was awesome. We also learned the history of the Star Spangled Banner. We saw lots of animal tracks in the snow throughout our stay at Cedar Hill and had fun "painting" in the snow with spray bottles. The S'mores on the campfire were fun to make and eat. The Cadettes learned how to "quill" paper and create designs (photo at left). And we all learned a whole lot of origami! Click on Photo Albums on the menu to see some pictures. If you have pictures you'd like to share, send them to mersmith62@hotmail.com. Thanks to everyone for all the planning that went into making Encampment a success!
Registration Information for Troop Leaders for Fall 2008
Every leader should have received an Early Bird registration packet last spring. If you didn't, please contact Kathy Carey at zenakahlo@aol.com or 781-647-3310. Here are Kathy's step-by-step instructions for completing registration. (Note: The date for Early Bird registration has long since passed, but you can still get your registrations to Kathy so that we can get everything in order for the Fall.) In your packet you will find the following:
  • Pink Slip: When our area Council consolidated, it changed its umbrella Bank of America bank account.  You must deposit your early bird dues into the NEW bank account.  The deposit slip in your envelope is for this new account.  Please discard any old deposit slips you may have.
  • Purple Spring Registration Instruction Sheets: This is a step-by-step explanation of how you should complete early bird registration.  There is also a helpful check list on the back of these sheets to ensure you've filed all the necessary paperwork.  If you have ANY questions about what you need to do, please email me at zenakahlo@aol.com or call me at 781.647.3310.
  • Yellow Early Bird Sheet: This sheet outlines the incentives to registering girls early.  It also has a section that you should complete indicating the number of girls you are registering. The deadline for this has passed.
  • Orange Bank Account Policy Sheet: Due to consolidation of several Girl Scout Councils into the new Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEM) , Troop bank accounts need to be opened or changed to be affiliated with the new umbrella account.  The orange sheet goes into detail about how you should open a new account or change your old account to the new system.  If you have any questions about Troop bank accounts, please call Jessica Numann at the Waltham GSEM office at 781.893.6113 X237.
  • White Certificate of Exemption Sheet: This documentation is necessary to open or change your bank account.  Please bring it to the bank with you.
  • Bank of America Deposit Slip: Registration dues and Family Partnership contributions should be deposited into the umbrella Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts account using the enclosed deposit slip.  Some Troops prefer to deposit the money they receive into their own accounts and then write one Troop check for the total amount received to be deposited into the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts account.  Either way works, but please return the deposit slip to me showing you have deposited all monies received.  Remember, the deposit should equal the number of girl and adult registrations at $10 each plus any Family Partnership donations.
  • Green Family Meeting Outline Sheet: Some Troop leaders like to hold a Family Meeting at the end of the scouting year to go over with parents what is expected of them and the girls for the next scouting season and how they can participate in Early Bird registration.
  • Membership dues summary: This is a cover form for the girl and adult registration forms you return.  Please fill out this form completely.  Your numbers should match -- if for instance you had 5 girls register early there should be a deposit slip showing $50 was deposited into the Eastern Massachusetts Girl Scout account (plus any donations to Family Partnership).  This information on where and what day of the week you will be meeting is very helpful to me when trying to register new girls in the fall.
  • Prepinted Girl and Adult Registration Forms: Any parent or girl who was registered as of February should have a preprinted form in your Troop's packet.  Parents should review these forms for any changes or corrections and return them to you immediately.  If you need blank forms, please let me know and I will put them in the bin on my front steps.
