Westview Boys Soccer: Alumni News
Saturday, November 24Brendan McWalters 2007 Rookie of the Year!
Brendan McWalters was selected as 2007 Rookie of the Year for the Whittier College men's soccer team. A first-year player, McWalters joined Seminara as a part of the men's defense. He came to Whittier to play both soccer and lacrosse. This season, McWalters played 90 minutes of every soccer game. Coach Paul G. Walmesy had this to say about McWalters: "He played left full back and central defender. Once we moved him to central defense, her really stepped up and performed magnificently. As a freshman, to be given the responsibility of playing central defender is a huge challenge. Brendan was as solid as a rock, great in the air, fierce in tackles and an all around committed player."
Another Westview alumni, Joey Gelaro ('06) was selected as 2006 Rookie of the Year for Whittier College.

1ST ANNUAL WESTVIEW BOYS ALUMNI GAME
Our first “official” Alumni game on Wed night was a great experience for all the players involved. This year’s Varsity team turned up thinking that they were going to be scrimmaging a high school team from L.A., only to find that they were going to be playing the Alumni. The first half ended 1-0 to the current Varsity team (with Brian Robinson scoring the goal); however, after hitting the posts a few times, the Alumni managed to score 3 goals (Erik Pavlics, Joey Gelaro, and Greg Piechota) to finish the game with the win. I know that the current Varsity team was really excited about seeing many of their buddies from last year, and how impressed they were that many of the Alumni “still have it”. I would like to make the Alumni game a regular occurrence, with 5:00pm every December 20 as the time and date. - Coach Martin Coughlin

Gelaro '10 Finishes with Hat Trick
Joey Gelaro '10 provided all the offense the Poets would need by registering his first collegiate hat trick and Whittier beat La Sierra University 3-2 at Donald Graham Field on September 14.
The Poets improve their record to 2-1, beating La Sierra (1-3 overall) for the second time in as many games. Whittier won their last meeting 4-1 at La Sierra on September 8.
The Golden Eagles struck first, scoring in the seventh minute. The Poets evened the score thirty minutes later when Gelaro scored his first collegiate goal on a rebound from a Dan Roe '08 shot that caromed of the post. The score was 1-1 at the half.
Whittier started the second half scoring in the 60th minute. Ronnie Beal '10 beat a La Sierra defender and sent a perfect ball from the end line and through the box that found Gelaro's left foot for his second goal of the day. Gelaro completed the hat trick in the 77th minute on a free kick from 25 yards that beat the LSU goalkeeper. The Golden Eagles added one more in the 81st minute, but it wasn't enough as the Poets defense held on for the 3-2 victory.
