| Reader and Manuel |
Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel is taking "a good, hard look" at versatile Senator Miles Reader as a means to possibly improve the team's bench flexibility, sources say.
Manuel and Reader were seen kibitzing around the Deptford area this past weekend, huddled in converation, which prompted the rumor mill to fire up.
"Chooch is getting a little older, and so are some of the other guys," Manuel said upon being asked about the meeting. "And this Reader guy, like I said, is old, but he can still get after it. We like him as a backup catcher, fifth outfielder, and utility infielder, too. Since he can do so many different things, we can keep one less bench player and add a pitcher."
From his position, Reader same less sure about making such a move.
"I like Charlie, and of course, the Phillies have a very nice club," Reader said. "But I'm coming from a team that has won championships two of the past three years, and I KNOW I have a starting job with the Senators. So the Phillies are going to have to make me one hell of an offer if I'm going anywhere."
Reached at his Thursday bowling session at Cross Key Lanes, Senator GM Nick Frese didn't seem too concered about the development.
"I'm sure the Phillies want Miles," Frese said, "But I just don't see him leaving the Senators. We pay the guy a LOT of money, and the Phillies are already up against the luxury tax. But hey, if they wanna throw $5 million or so at him, they can have him."
Stay tuned.
