Danbury Barons Announce 2008 All-Stars
The Danbury Barons are proud to announce their All-Star selections for the 2008 season:
Tyler Collins
Outfield
Bats: Right Throws: Right
College: University of Connecticut-Avery Point
After a fantastic rookie campaign, Tyler Collins has been named to the All-Star team in his first WRWBL season. The young outfielder led or was tied for the team lead in hits (31), doubles (5), triples (3), home runs (3) and stolen bases (15) this season, batting at a .360 clip. Collins was one of only two players to play in every Barons game this season, and did not make an error the entire year while spending time at all three outfield positions, and the statistics show why he is a leading contender for WRWBL Rookie of the Year in 2008. Tyler plays his college baseball at UCONN-Avery Point, where he will be a sophomore this upcoming year.
Gary Dunn
Outfield
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
College: University of Connecticut
Gary Dunn makes his third consecutive All-Star appearance after having another outstanding season as the leadoff hitter and centerfielder for the Danbury Barons in 2008. While a coaching commitment hindered his availability at times, when in the lineup Dunn was a force, batting at .308 with 2 homers and an incredible .550 on-base percentage. He also did not make an error while playing centerfield for most of the season. Gary played college baseball for the University of Connecticut.
Brent Morris
Pitcher
Bats: Left Throws: Left
College: Muhlenberg College
In his third year with the Barons, Brent Morris has earned his first All-Star selection. After two years of primarily coming out of the bullpen, Morris stepped up when the team needed it in 2008, leading the league in wins with 7 while posting a respectable 3.70 ERA. The young lefty won’t overpower batters with his stuff, but his ability to change speeds and get the big outs when needed are what led him to his best season to date in the orange and black. Brent plays his collegiate baseball at Muhlenberg College, where he will be a senior this upcoming year.
Tommy Thulin
Outfield
Bats: Right Throws: Right
College: University of Connecticut
Pro: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Organization
In his fourth year with the Barons, Tommy Thulin has earned his 3rd All-Star nomination after another excellent season. Despite stepping up and managing the team on the field, Thulin remained one of the league’s most dangerous hitters, hitting .378 and leading the team in RBI with 27 and runs with 22. Thulin also did whatever the team needed defensively in 2008, logging time at 6 out of 9 positions and fielding a very respectable .967 in 60 overall chances. Tommy played college baseball at the University of Connecticut and also spent time in the Angels organization.
Lou Vernagallo
Third Base
Bats: Left Throws: Right
College: Long Island University-Brooklyn
Pro: Northern League
Lou Vernagallo makes his 4th straight All-Star appearance for the Danbury Barons after being selected twice as a Yonkers Yankee. After a slow start (by his standards) to the 2008 season, Sweet Lou went on a tear to close the season, and ended with a .357 average with 25 hits in only 20 games played. Lou also struck out only 4 times in 70 at bats, a feat impressive in itself. Vernagallo’s veteran leadership on a team of young players goes beyond any numerical statistic, as his experience and knowledge of the league helped newer players become successful as the season wore on. Lou played his collegiate baseball at LIU-Brooklyn and also spent time in the Northern League after college.
The 2008 WRWBL All-Star Game will be played on August 24th at Pace University, with a time to be announced. Please join the Barons after the game as Tommy Gergley and Mat Terrillion will be inducted into the WRWBL Hall of Fame!

Tommy Gergley and Mat Terrillion Elected to WRWBL Hall of Fame
Tommy Gergley and Mat Terrillion Elected to WRWBL Hall of Fame
Longtime Barons Tommy Gergley and Mat Terrillion, two main cogs of the dominant Barons teams of the beginning of the decade, have been elected to the WRWBL Hall of Fame, the league announced Friday. Gergley and Terrillion will be inducted at the All-Star Game festivities on Sunday, August 24th at Pace University.
Tommy Gergley, who was a member of the Barons from the formation of the franchise in 2000 through 2006, when the team won its third WRWBL Championship, holds almost every offensive record in Danbury Barons history. Gergley holds team records for hits, doubles, triples, runs scored, RBI and walks, is second in homeruns, third in slugging percentage and fifth in overall batting average. The numbers don’t even begin to show why Gergley was so valuable to the Barons, however. His overall leadership as the #1 catcher and his handling of the young Baron pitchers over the year was nothing short of incredible, and most importantly there was never a member of the team who had a bad word to say about a great guy. Gergley’s number 5 was retired by the team at the end of his career in 2006, and it is only fitting that by the numbers, the greatest Baron in team history will now take his rightful place in the WRWBL Hall of Fame.
Mat Terrillion, another original Baron who retired after the 2006 season, was one of the most fiery players in league history. His intensity, both in centerfield and on the mound as the team closer, is unmatched, and it showed in the results of his play. Terrillion won a record five consecutive Gold Gloves for his play in centerfield, recording over 50 assists and often baiting runners into challenging his arm, only to make them pay for what always turned out to be a poor decision. On the mound, his 17 saves are both a team and league record, and the number would have been much higher had the Barons not been such an offensive powerhouse throughout their dominant years. All that anyone needs to know about “Matty T” came in the 2006 playoffs, when after a freak injury rendered him unable to throw a baseball, he went against doctors orders and played throughout the WRWBL playoffs, and his presence certainly played a factor in helping the Barons win their 3rd WRWBL Cup in a hard fought 5 game series against the New City Outlaws.
Tommy and Mat join Justin Scali (2004), Troy Lehrer (2005), Chris Neill (2007) and Vinny Carlucci (2007) as members of the WRWBL Hall of Fame. Please join the Danbury Barons past and present in congratulating Tommy Gergley and Mat Terrillion on their election into the WRWBL Hall of Fame.
