You Make the Call!!!
Question: One out, runners on 2nd and 3rd base. The batter hits a ground ball to the third baseman, who gets the runner on 3rd in a rundown between home and 3rd base. The runner eludes the tag and returns to 3rd base safely. Meanwhile, the runner originally on 2nd is also standing on 3rd base. Both are tagged. Who is out?
a) The base runner originally on 3rd base
b) The base runner originally on 2nd base
c) Both runners
d) Neither runner, both are safe
Check back next Friday for the answer... and a new quiz question.
Here's the answer to last week's question:
Question: Tagging up on a ball hit to right centerfield, the runner on third base takes off for home when the ball hits the centerfielder's glove. The ball, however, jumps out of the centerfielder's glove and pops up in the air, but is caught by the rightfielder. When the ball is actually caught, the runner is already a third of the way to home plate and scores easily. The defense formally appeals that the runner left early. What's the call?
a) The batter is out on the catch and the runner is out on the appeal
b) The batter is out on the catch, the runner is called safe on the appeal, and the run counts
c) The batter is out on the catch, the ball is called dead, and the runner is sent back to third base
Answer: The answer is b) The batter is out on the catch, the runner is called safe on the appeal, and the run counts. According to the approved ruling for the definition of "a catch" (Rule 2.00) - runners may leave their bases the instant the first fielder touches the ball.

Baseball Sudoku
The principles for solving baseball sudoku puzzles are the same as those for traditional 9x9 sudoku puzzles, except that in baseball sudoku, the numbers 1 to 9 are replaced by the starting positions on a baseball lineup: P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF and RF. Nine boxes in a sudoku grid, nine players on a baseball field, hence baseball sudoku. As in classic sudoku, there is only one basic rule to remember: Each horizontal row, vertical column and 3x3 grid must contain every baseball position without repeating. It's that simple. No math is required. No baseball knowledge. Just pure logic. And because each baseball sudoku puzzle has only one solution, guessing will not be helpful.
