Thursday, July 2 Springfield's 9s take home hardware!
In a championship game befitting two unbeaten teams, the fans were treated to a great display of skill, coaching and execution. Springfield was playing out in front most of the night when things got really interesting in the top of the 4th inning. Trailing 7-3, TYA turned to fundamentals and put Springfield’s defense to the test with three consecutive, perfectly-placed bunts. All three bunters were safe and TYA was in business. By the end of the half inning, TYA was within 7-5 and Springfield came to bat looking to spread the gap. In its turn, Springfield managed to get runners to second and third with one out, but TYA’s young pitcher clamped down and got out of the inning. Springfield gave up another run and stalled on offense in the bottom of the fifth. They went to the field in the sixth inning with a slim, one-run lead. Two quick outs put TYA’s championship hopes on life support when a humpback liner was mishandled at third base. Their next batter poked one through the left side and, just like that, TYA had the go-ahead run on base with two down. Facing the same situation the night before, TYA buckled down and got the last out. Well, Springfield was watching after they’d won their semifinal game and they must’ve taken note because tonight’s game ended the same way. Springfield’s hurler reared back and delivered a strike he won’t soon forget. The batter swung, the catcher squeezed and Springfield held on, 7-6, to become WNLL’s 2009 9-Year-Old Tournament Champion!! In a game featuring two very well-coached teams, it was no surprise to see wonderful examples of sportsmanship following the game and during trophy presentations. SPRINGFIELD!!! Wednesday, July 1 9-Year-Old All-Star Tournament - Semifinals Friday, June 26 9-year-olds set to begin tournament tonight Wednesday, June 24 Upper Providence's 8-Year-Old All-Stars take home Championship
Upper Providence put its defense on the field first and had to feel good about that. Entering the game, UP had allowed a paltry 2.2 runs per contest. But Malvern came out fast and posted three runs for a quick lead that UP didn’t dent until the second inning. After two, Malvern turned to small ball. And do I mean small. Tiny even. UP was helpless as Malvern strung together about four consecutive batted balls that may not have traveled a combined 60 feet. Malvern’s good fortune led to a 5-run maximum inning that expanded its lead. But UP stayed calm, knowing there was a lot of baseball left to play. That fact didn’t deter Malvern – the 34 innings they played in this tournament were more than any other team – and they braced for the long haul. UP chipped away with a run here and a pair there and the next thing you knew, the game was heading to the 6th inning with Malvern’s lead down to one, 9-8. Malvern went down in the top of the inning without stretching its lead, so all the pressure fell to UP. They managed to knot the game up at 9-9 with just one out and then, with runners on first and third, they played a little small ball of their own. On a gentle bouncer back to the mound, the winning run scored and Upper Providence was WNLL’s 2009 8-Year-Old Tournament Champion!!
