Assistant Coach Brian Whelan hired by Red Sox
Brian Whelan, part of the Wentworth baseball coaching staff since the fall of 2000, has been named Latin Education Coordinator for the Boston Red Sox. He will work with their players on language and cultural issues, as well as support the Minor League and International Scouting coordinators. He will be based at the Red Sox training complex in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Whelan, is a native of the Bronx, but attended Brookline (MA) high school with Wentworth coaches Tom Randolph and Paul Hannigan. He graduated from UMass-Boston in 1996, where he set several hitting records while playing shortstop. A self-taught fluent speaker of Spanish, has also worked since 1999 for Major League Baseball International, serving as an envoy. He has coached, instructed, and promoted the game in this capacity in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
Coach Whelan will be missed by the Wentworth coaches and players, but we wish him well in professional baseball.
