Travel A Beats Little League 4-1 in Hungerford Tournament

In a much anticipated matchup and in front of one of the largest Wolcott Park crowds, West Hartford Youth Baseball Travel A All Stars defeated the West Hartford Little League All Stars 4-1. The two teams met at home plate before the game and players and coaches shook hands before the start of the game. John Roberts started on the mound for Travel A and Travis Busch started for Little League.

In the top of the 1st inning, Max Vogel-Freedman led off the game for the Little League with a bunt single and moved to 2nd base on a passed ball. He was stranded at 2nd with a strikeout of Ty Hollens, a popup to the pitcher by Doug Horan and a groundout to short by Reid Collins to end the inning. Travel A struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the first. Dylan Robinson led off the game with a line drive double and moved to 3rd base on the throw after a ground out to shortstop. John Roberts then doubled into right field to score Robinson for a 1-0 lead but was left at second base on a ground out and strikeout by Brendon Rossmeisl and Glynn Baron. Little League tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 2nd. After a ground out by Calab LaRosa, Dan Nunes had an infield single and moved around the bases on 2 wild pitches and a passed ball to even the score at 1.

In the bottom on the 2nd inning, Jake Karas singled with 2 outs and scored from 1st on a long double to right field by Bobby Marconi. Little League made a pitching change with 2 outs in the 2nd and removed Busch and replaced him with LaRosa. LaRosa struck out Brendan Smith to end the 2nd inning. In the top of the 3rd, Nick Orlowski walked to open the inning and with a 2-0 count to Vogel-Freedman, Rossmeisl relieved Roberts on the mound for the Youth All Stars. Rossmeisl struck out Vogel-Freedman for the 1st out, Hollens was hit by a pitch putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Horan flew out to left field for the 2nd out of the inning and Collins grounded out to short on a very close play at 1st base to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Robinson walked to lead off the inning, Conner Smedberg grounded into a fielder choice forcing Robinson at 2nd and Roberts got on by an error from the the shortstop Horan. Rossmeisl then tripled on a strange play on a hard hit ball to short that kicked off the shortstop and went all the way to the wall in centerfield scoring Smedberg and Roberts to make it 4-1. Baron followed with a bunt single and on the throw to first, Rossmeisl broke for home plate and was thrown out at the plate by an alert Busch for the 2nd out. Baron was then thrown out attempting to steal 2nd base for the 3rd out by Vogel-Freedman. Little League did not threaten to score in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings and did not put a runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game with Rossmeisl in control on the mound with a very good fast ball and sharp curve.

At the plate for Travel A, Robinson led the attack with a double and single scoring once. Rossmeisl tripled with 2 RBI and Marconi and Roberts doubled with 1 RBI each. Karas and Baron had 1 hit each with Karas scoring one run. Roberts pitched 2 innings allowing 2 infield singles with 3 K’s and Rossmeisl pitched 4 innings allowing only 1 hit with 3 K’s.

Rotary Wins President's Cup

Rotary beat Schatz & Nobel 4-2 on Wednesday night to win the President's Cup.  Here are highlights from the game:

The President's Cup final lived up to its advanced billing as Rotary and Schatz & Nobel battled for six innings right down to the last out.  Rotary scored first in the top of the 1st inning on a walk to Glynn Baron, a double from Connor Smedburg, and a passed ball.  Rotary added another run in the top of the 4th inning on a lead off single from Baron and an RBI double from Smedburg to take a 2-0 lead. Schatz & Nobel rallied to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th inning when Jonathan Greenfield hit a towering home run over the left centerfield fence to score him and Christian Martinez who led off the inning with a walk.  Rotary then loaded the bases in the top of the 6th inning. After Baron doubled, Smedburg was intentionally walked and Ryan Bell walked.  Nick Adams then hit a hard ground ball to first and an errant throw home allowed both Baron and Smedburg to score to put Rotary ahead 4-2. Schatz & Nobel would not go down quietly though.  Down to their last at-bat, Greenfield singled, Matt Luther was hit by a pitch, and Chris Butler walked to load the bases with just one out.  However, Smedburg was up to the task and got a pop-up to Baron at shortstop and a strikeout to end the game.  For Rotary, Drew Mendes (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's) and Smedburg (3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's) pitched a tremendous game.  Baron (2 for 3, 3 runs, double) and Smedburg (2 for 2, 2 doubles, run, RBI) had four of Rotary's five hits.  Nick Adams had the other hit.  For Schatz & Nobel, Andy Monos pitched three strong innings allowing only one run on two hits.  Jonathan Zelinger pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th to keep Schatz close.  Jonathan Greenfield (3 for 3, home run, 2 RBI's) was the hitting star for Schatz.  Kyle Cabral and Zelinger had the other two Schatz hits.  Butler (3B) and Martinez (CF) made several nice plays in the field.
