Travel A 3 West Haven 2
After 5 games in less than 36 hours, West Hartford Travel A was set to face Little League District 4 heavyweight West Haven in West Haven. The sun was going down, lights were on, a cool Long Island Sound breeze was in their faces but all those comforts on a hot Summer evening could not cure tired legs and arms from the 5 previous games. West Haven was loaded with many quality hitters and starting pitcher Nick Price, a hard throwing 65 mph submariner with a good change and curve. If you're an old time baseball person, this was a classic small ball, pitchers duel.
West Hartford would start John Roberts in an attempt to keep the game close in the early innings. West Haven struck first with an unearned run. West Hartford tied it up in top of the 3rd at 1-1. A walk to Dylan Robinson and a perfect sac bunt by Jack Martin that advanced the speedy Robinson to 3rd and beat the throw and the shortstop covering the bag. West Hartford pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 4th on back-to-back doubles by Brendon Rossmeisl and Roberts scoring Rossmeisl. Glynn Baron’s two out line drive single to center was enough to score Roberts with the 3rd run giving West Hartford a 3-1 lead. West Haven pushed a run across in the 5th to get closer on a chalk line double down the right field line. Roberts struck out the next batter to get out of a 2nd & 3rd jam in the 5th keeping the score at 3-2. Roberts night was done on the mound (5 IP, 1 hit, 9 K's).
With pitching short in the 6th inning of West Hartford’s 6th game in 36 hours, Walter Hansen took the ball. Hansen struck out the lead off batter, got the #2 hitter to pop-up to Charlie Fisher at 1st base and struck out the #3 hitter to end the game.
