Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Sign-In: It is very important that you sign in when you show up for your shift so that your hours will be accounted for. Please find one of the concession stand employees to help you sign-in.
  • Workstations: There will be two workstations this year for volunteers to help out with. One of those will involve helping the concession employee handle and prepare food, the other will be working at one of the concession windows helping to serve customers and handle money. (Each volunteer will be asked to stay at one window in the stand, unless otherwise directed.) The concession stand employee will be assigning you to your workstation.

    • Food Preparer/Handler: The first step required of the volunteer is to wash hands thoroughly, and then gloves need to be put on. You, the volunteer, has the option to cook the brats and hamburgers on the grill or help with the food inside the concession stand. Your duties will include getting the food necessary to fill the orders taken by the volunteers working at the windows, and helping to ensure that there continues to be enough prepared food. (The concession stand employee will help you to learn how each item is served and prepared.)
    • Grilling: The first step required of the volunteer is to wash hands thoroughly. Gloves will need to be worn while placing the raw hamburger meat and the pre-cooked brats onto the grill and then they may be removed. The concession employee will have the grill started and ready to go for the volunteer to cook on if the volunteer chooses to grill. The volunteer will be given a plate or two with all the items that will need to be grilled. There will be a meat thermometer provided for the hamburger patties and the brats are all pre-cooked and will need to be completely browned before they will be served.
    • Windows: The first step required of the volunteer is to wash hands thoroughly. Then we ask that the volunteer familiarize themselves with some of the products, prices, and where they are kept to help make the concession stand more efficient. A volunteer will be assigned to one window and will be asked to please stay at the window assigned to you until your shift has been completed. The duties at the windows include: taking customer orders, handling money, getting any items ordered that do not have to be taken care of by the food preparer (drinks, candy, chips, ice cream, and popcorn).
  •  Clean-up and Restocking: Restocking should be done throughout the night. The candy, chips, and drinks are all very popular items that the concession staff will need volunteer help to restock. If there is a slow period of time during your volunteer shift you may be asked to restock, in which case the concession employee will help you find all the products that need to be replenished. If you are working the closing volunteer shift you will may be asked to help wash dishes, restock, sweep floors, empty trash, break down boxes, clean food machines, etc. Please ask the concession staff what you can help with.

Concessions FAQ

 1. What is the 2009 requirement for working in the concession stand?

There is a requirement to work 4 hours in the concession stand for each registered player in their family unless the buyout of $75/player is paid.

2. I am a coach. Is my family required to volunteer in the concession stand?

No. In 2009, the Board of Directors approved that head coaches will be given credit for volunteer time served for their child on the team they are coaching. Team Parents are also given credit for volunteer time served for their child on the team they are the team parent.

3. What if I don’t want to work during my son/daughter’s game?

Generally, parents will NOT be scheduled to work during their child’s games. The VLL Board has carefully reviewed past scheduling and determined this policy is necessary in order to provide the best possible service at the concession stand. Team parents will be provided with several dates for parents to choose from to work in concessions. One date will be staffed entirely by your team. An alternate date (generally a Saturday) will be staffed by your division, and the remaining dates (generally holidays and other special days) are open to everyone. If you are scheduled to work when your child (or your other children) is scheduled to play, you are expected to remain inside the concession stand for your entire shift.

4. How is the scheduling being done?

We are using Volunteerspot.com.  More information to follow.

5. Do I have to work one four hour shift or can I work two hour shifts?

From a scheduling standpoint, it is preferred that you work one four hour shift per player, however your volunteer commitment can be scheduled as two 2-hour shifts. It is also possible for two adults in a family to split one four hour shift.

6. I have a responsible 16-year-old. Can he/she volunteer in my place?

No, due to liability reasons, only adult volunteers, 18 years and older, will be allowed in the concession stand.

7. Can I bring my children with me when I help in the concession stand?

No, due to liability reasons, only adult volunteers, 18 years and older, will be allowed in the concession stand.

8. Can I have free food while I’m helping in the concession stand?

No, we want to maximize our profits in the concession stand so please pay for any food or drink. Volunteers may not eat while serving customers.

9. What if something comes up and I can’t work the shift I signed up for?

We really depend on parent volunteers so if you can’t work, it is your responsibility to find a substitute. You can ask your team parent for assistance, if necessary. Emergency absences should be called in advance to Theresa Bull, Concessions Volunteer Coordinator, at

10. What will my duties be when I volunteer in the concession stand?

You will be asked to sell packaged food items (soda, ice cream, slushies, chips, candy) and take money/give change. The employee(s) working will take care of hot foods such as hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, grilled foods, etc. You will be asked to help stock or help clean up if your shift is near closing time. There will be at least one employee present during all shifts and they will fill you in on the details.

11. What if I am supposed to work and the game is rained out or rescheduled?

Please plan on working when the game is rescheduled, which is usually the first Saturday afternoon following the rainout. If that is not possible, contact Theresa Bull, Concessions Volunteer Coordinator, at

12. Can I still select the buyout option?

Yes, please submit a $75 check made out to Verona Little League. You can mail it to the VLL P.O. Box, drop it off at the concession stand, or give to your team parent.
