Well, we thought the Fall season was over, but the girls laced their cleats up for one more time. VGC traveled to Baton Rouge, LA for the USSSA Louisiana Fall State Tournament.
Bracket play kicked off against a tough Cajun Crusher team. Velocity would explode for 6 runs in the second inning with a led off single from Brittney McCray, followed by hits from Erica Lewis, Taylor Chandler, Liz Zorich, and Emma Rae Castanedo. Brooke Barnes would end up the 2nd inning driving in the last two runs of the inning on a single up the middle. The ladies would score again in the top of fourth inning and take the win 7-4. Erica Lewis picked up the win allowing only one hit.
The night cap saw the ladies up against LA Explosion. The Velocity bats heated up in the 2nd as the girls put 2 runs on the board and followed up with 5 runs in the 3rd and another 3 runs in the 4th. Bishop and Castanedo would combine on the no hit shutout, pitching 4 innings and striking out 8 Explosion batters.VGC wins 10-0.
Sunday morning saw Velocity scheduled to play the 007’s. The girls would see the same pitcher that beat us earlier in the Fall in Hammond. Remember in our post, we stated that she was one of the best pitchers we had seen all Fall. The bats were on fire as the girls put 3 runs on the board the 1st inning behind hits from Barnes, Bishop, McCray, and Chandler. The girls would then push 6 runs across the plate in the 3rd with multiple hits from McCray, Chandler, McKinney, Powell, and Barnes, and Bishop. In the circle, Lewis dominated the 007 batters, giving up no hits in 3 innings of work. Bishop would close the game out facing 3 batters in the bottom of the 4th. VGC wins 9-0.
The championship game would find the Cajun Crushers coming back thru the loser’s bracket to challenge VGC for the LA Fall State Championship. The game remained scoreless till the top of the 3rd inning when Brooke Barnes started the inning with a single, followed by a triple from Bishop, and hits from McCray, and Lewis. Liz Zorich would then single to left field to load the bases. Emma then cleared the bases with a double to right center as VGC would score 6 runs in the inning. Powell would then start the 4th inning with a single. Barnes and Bishop would push her around to third and then a two-out single from McCray would score KP to end the inning. Lewis was on the mound and threw a complete game giving up only three hits and striking out 5 in four innings of work. VGC wins 7-1.
What a great way to end up the Fall Season. The girls finished the Fall with a record of 26-4. VGC played in six fall tournaments placing 1st in 4 tournaments and 2nd in the other two. We will now take a few weeks off and start back after the Thanksgiving holidays.
