Talal, Sean, Kelii, Tayyab: Empire League Champions!
Tayyab 3200
Tayyab Khan, Empire League Champ FS 3200!
Wow, what an Empire League Finals to remember! The Tigers won all of the open running events at the Varsity Boys level! Kelii Jackson won the 100 and 200 meters, Sean Krinik won the 400 with a breakthrough 49.98, Talal Khan won the 800 in a stunning 1:55.66 best time, Talal won the 1600 meters in a comfortable 4:22, and Talal also won the 3200 meters in 9:35! Woo-hoo!

There were so many wonderful highlights. Nadia Sandoval set a goal time, memorized her splits, hit them and ended up with a big 5:31 PR. She placed 4th but because of a drop, will get to advance to CIF in the 1600 meters!

Tayyab Khan is another of our Empire League Champions winning the FS 3200 meter event with panache, out running a strong, fresh Cypress competitor. Both runners ran to win, but Tayyab used his newly developed kick to seal the deal with a PR, 10:09 time! Tayyab also placed 3rd in the 1600 earlier in the meet with a huge best time, 4:40.

The boys varsity 1600 was tactically fun to watch as Talal took the race out in 62, many tried to follow except Luis Avellaneda who ran dead last the first lap. As runners failed to maintain the pace, Luis moved up through the pack and by the last lap, Talal kept the pace for the win, and Luis challenged for runner-up but finished 3rd and qualified for CIF!

The boys varsity 800 was another excited race to watch as the Cypress runner led for the first 300 meters, then Talal took over, going through the first 400 in 55, then fought off a challenge and kicked for the win in 1:55, a four second PR. Meanwhile, Sean Krinik, fresh off his win in the 400 meters, was working his was through the pack and with 100 meters to go unleashed a massive surge to move past the Cypress runner for second place and a impressive 1:57 clocking.

All four of the FS girls ran best times in the 1600 meters, slashing 10-20 seconds off their previous PR's! America Rojas led the group placing 8th followed by Sejal Patel, Mariam Fazil and Kelsey Hoskins. Sejal and America came back to compete in the 800 with equally successful results, Sejal finished 5th and America 8th, both running best times too.

The Boys FS 3200 was yet another highlight as each runner ran incredible times and improvements. Tayyab won, followed by Roman Gutierrez in 5th, followed by a stream of fast Tigers: Brad Cooke,J osh Rangel, Diego Baiza, Chase French, Ruben Aguilar, Michael Pope, and Steven Suarez. Most of the FS boys took 30 seconds off their previous best times. Michael Pope set two PR's in this race as he ran the first 1600 meters faster than his PR, and broke his 3200 top time as well!
Diego ran all three distance races and ran best times in each of the events.

The FS boy 800 was led by a determined Troy Czegledy who placed 4th with a big breakthrough time, a 2:07 and a 3 second PR. Diego was 6th and Matthew Vo, 7th, all runners running best times.

The boys varsity 3200 event was won by Talal, and Angel Aguirre will also be competing at CIF in this event by virtue of 3rd place! Jose Gutierrez continued his comeback with a fine 4th place, Erick Pacheco contributed a point with a 6th place, Luis hung on for 8th place in his third event of the day, and Alex Torres finished the season with his best race of the track season, a 10:22 and a 12th place!

Sean 400_1
Sean advances to Finals in the 400!

It took some pretty fast times to advance to the CIF Finals this year in the distance events but Talal was ready and qualified in both the 1600 meters and the 3200 meter runs! Sean Krinik ran personal best times in the 400 meters and the 800 meters and ended up qualifying in the 400 and is the 2nd alternate in the 800. They will compete next Saturday at Mt SAC.

Talal ran 4:18 to qualify in the 1600 meters leading for 2 laps to make sure the heat was fast enough to advance to Finals, it was a smart race. The 3200 meters was really fun to watch as Talal and three others formed an aliance to help keep the pace fast enough to match the first heat of the 3200. Talal qualified in 9:21, a personal best time.

Sean used his strong finishing kick to place 2nd in his heat of the 400 and advance to Finals with 49. best time. The 800 meters was challenging as it was run as a waterfall start with Sean on the inside lane! He was boxed in for most of the race, finished with an awesome kick, and finished second in his heat in 1:57. also a best time.

Nadia Sandoval gave it what she had, hung on as long as possible and ends her senior season at Prelims. Nadia had a great season and influenced the younger runners with her no fear, super competitive racing style.

Luis Avellaneda and Angel Aguirre also end their seasons at Prelims. Luis ran the 1600 meters and finished with a solid time and a big jump from last year. He gains experience and should be back next year! Angel Aguirre ran the 3200 meters and almost pulled it off, making all the right moves through 5 laps. Angel will be missed and put together an amazing four years as a Tiger distance runner!

Kelii Jackson, Brandi Straughter and Brian Berkeley competed and end their seasons by running best times in their events.

Talal wins Division II 1600 meters, CIF Champion!
Talal 9 mask

Congratulations to Talal Khan, CIF Champion in the 1600 meters for Division II! Talal did not let the 100 degree temperatures deter him from his goal of running to win this race. He took over the race going into the 3rd lap and never looked back. The Loyola runner challenged and briefly took the lead with 200 meters to go, but Talal responded with a fierce kick over the final 100 meters to earn the title with a 4:18 clocking! Talal came back later in the day to compete in the 3200 meters. He was very competitive until the weather and earlier effort took its toll leaving him in 5th place overall for Division II, a pretty good double.

Sean Krinik finished his stellar season competing and finishing 8th in the 400 meter finals, great sophomore year in track and cross country!

Talal ends season at State Meet Prelims!
Talal 8
Talal caps off great career at the State Meet

It was an amazing season for Talal Khan and it came to an end at the State Meet Prelims where he placed 8th in his heat. Talal led for 3 laps and it took its toll on the final lap but what a season...CIF Champion and our new school record holder!

German Fernandez and Christine Babcock ran National records at the State Meet Finals and that really sums up how strong the California runners are and how difficult it is to even make the California State Meet, so great job Talal and we wish you continued success at UC Riverside!
