Tigers start season against El Dorado!

The frosh soph milers got the season going for the Tigers in style against El Dorado by placing in the first 5 positions! Paul Goslin was the winner, followed by Karin Zoldana, Daniel Aldama, Steven Suarez and Diego Baiza. Great efforts by all with some really improved runners from fall cross country like Ruben Aguilar, Roman Gutierrez and Josh Rangel. Kent Woodling, Alex Torres and George Ngo swept the scoring positions in the frosh/soph 800 meter run!

The girls faced good competition with Sarah Garcia placing 3rd in 5:59 for the varsity runners. Gema Macias won the frosh/soph race with a good start of the season time. Lauren Maserjian and Emily Israel begin the season with great times in the 800 meter run, with Lauren placing 3rd in 2:44. Alyssa Lees took off and never looked back, winning the frosh/soph 800, a great event for her!

Varsity boys stretched their legs getting ready for Mile Mania the next day at Brea. Jose Gutierrez looked strong and relaxed leading Talal Khan and the pack through the four laps. Talal won with Jose placing 2nd. Josh Linen, Erick Pacheco and Angel Aguirre took care of business in the varsity 800 meter run, placing 1st through 3rd.

A very good first meet, it was a non-scoring meet but we looked preeeeety good!

Tigers run like Maniacs at Mile Mania!
Twenty Valencia milers enjoyed perfect running conditions at Brea's Mile Mania, running under the stadium lights in the evening calm against enthusiastic competitors from Whittier, Foothill, and Brea.

The Frosh/Soph "A" team of Jose Gutierrez, Alex Torres, Kent Woodling, and Paul Goslin won their race in an exciting finishing duel with Foothill. Leadoff runner, Jose Gutierrez, smiling most of the race, ran a solo 4:45 giving the Tigers a big lead. Alex Torres ran a personal best time of 5:09 as 2nd leg, and freshman, Kent Woodling ran a fine 5:16 time for his first mile of his high school career! Anchor runner Paul in 5:01, was so tough and outkicked his rival, crossing the line with a 3 second advantage.

The Frosh/Soph "B" team was led by freshman Steven Suarez, running 5:13 as the second leg. Karin Zoldana led off in 5:19, Diego Baiza was 3rd leg in 5:29, his best time, and Daniel Aldama anchored with a 5:24, good for 4th place!

The Frosh/Soph "C" team was highlighted by some surprising improved runners, Josh Rangel and Ruben Aguilar. Ruben has gotten so strong since cross country with a lot of work this past winter, running his leg in 5:26 as the anchor. Josh Rangel led off in 5:29, his best time, with fellow freshman, Chris Meneses at 5:36 and George Ngo running 3rd leg in 5:44.

The Varsity race, an hour later at 7:30, was very exciting with the Tiger team taking most of the race to catch a very strong Brea squad. Josh Linen led off with a 4:32, 5 seconds behind Brea's Yanochek, Erick Pacheco took the next leg, running a personal best 4:46 and closing the gap a little. Angel Aguirre closed the gap a bit as well with his 4:45 but it took Talal Khan as anchor to catch Brea's 4th runner at the end of the 1st lap, then he bided his time before unleashing his kick with 300 meters to go finishing with a fine, 4:28.

The Varsity "B" team was led by two outstanding senior efforts from lead off runner, Joe Perez running his personal best 5:03 and Nick Hariri as anchor giving everything he had in the stretch to pass one more runner! It was a sight! Miguel Diaz and My Nguyen ran solid as the number 2 and 3 runners. It was My's first mile ever and he ran a 5:24, not bad at all!

Valencia wins 3 events at Earl Engman Relays!
April Wong
April Wong runs a great 800 meter leg in 4 x 800 relay
The Tigers won the Division II 4 x 800 Relay, the Distance Medley and the High Jump relay at the Earl Engman Relays!

Carter Griffin led the high jump team with an amazing 6'6" clearance of the bar! He later barely missed 6'8" and then, ran the Distance Medley Relay, a bit tired and dehydrated, still ran a 53 second 400 meters!

The girls Distance Medley started the day for the team and was highlighted by Sarah Garcia's 5:58 in such strong winds! It is great having Emily Israel back and she looked solid in her 800 meter leg as did Lauren Maserjian in the 400 and Gema Macias in the 1200 meter run. The girls placed 5th!

The 4 x 800 team was led by lead off runner, Josh Linen who ran a 2:03 on a blustery track all alone. A much stronger track athlete this year, Jose Gutierrez was second leg and ran a personal best 2:08 unchallenged. Angel Aguirre as the third leg, posted a 2:10 and Talal Khan, running on tired legs, anchored in 2:11 for the win.

The frosh/soph boys of Kent Woodling, Diego Baiza, Alex Torres adn Steven Suarez, put in a good effort in their 4 x 800, gaining valuable race experience.

The girls 4 x 800 team was led by the efforts of April Wong who surprised herself by finishing with an impressive 2:49! Sarah Garcia, Gema Macias and Sharon Colin combined with April to make it an exciting race.

The boys Distance Medley team won their race behind determined running from lead off 1200 runner, Angel Aguirre; speedy Carter Griffin in the 400; Talal Khan in the 800; and a very strong Josh Linen in the 1600. Angel gave the team the lead and they were never really challenged the rest of the race.

The tough and durable Joe Perez, Nick Hariri, Miguel Diaz and My Nguyen waited around all day to run their Distance Medley and rallied to put in some gutsy efforts. It was My's first 400 meter run, he did great, and Nick ran a 5:07 1600 meters to bring the baton home!

That was a lot of racing in three days, whew! Great job everyone, lets get back to work and put some more "money in the bank"!

Nadia Sandoval, Sarah Garcia and Arlin Sandoval worked together in the girls varsity 1600 to take the 1st through 3rd positions. This race was Nadia's first time under 6:00, a 5:54, good job! Gema Macias and Alyssa Lees went 1-2 for the frosh/soph girls.

The Varsity race was won by Josh Linen who was a busy guy, winning the 1600, the 800, the 3200 and running a leg on the 4x400 relay! 2nd place in the 1600 was Jose Gutierrez.

The 800 meter races featured repeat winners, Josh, Paul and Nadia. Paul ran a PR in his effort, as did Arlin, Gema Macias (2nd FS girl), Alyssa, and Marilu Grismer. Karin Zoldana, and Kent Woodling placed 2nd and 3rd for the frohs/soph boys. Angel Aguirre and Talal Khan were 2nd and 3rd for the varsity boys. April Wong PR'd placing 3rd for the varsity girls!

Talal Khan also had a challenging day as he ran and placed 2nd in the 400 meter run, came back to place in the 800, then anchored the 4 x 400 team!

Jose Gutierrez placed behind Josh in the varsity 3200 meter run, Alex Torres won the frosh/soph race and Arlin and Lauren Maserjian scored points for the varsity girls by placing 1st and 2nd.

Many 4x400 teams were put together, it made for exciting races! The frosh/soph team of Paul Goslin, Brian Tsu, Jeremy White and Karin Zoldana placed 1st.

Josh 2
Josh solos for a 9:28 at Trabuco Hills!

Josh Linen ran a strong solo effort, leading from the end of the first lap through the finish to record a win and a personal record, 9:28.37. The warm temperatures and breeze on the back stretch were factors in the race as well as an unaggressive field of runners. Great racing by Josh, there is a lot left untapped in that event for him!

Earlier, (much earlier :), the same day, 31 runners showed up for an amazing day of training on the trails of Fullerton. An all time high number of athletes chose the Varsity route including many motivated freshman. Most runners improved their training times over the distance. Freshman and first timers on the long varsity route were: Paul Goslin, Kent Woodling, Steven Suarez, Diego Baiza, Ruben Aguilar, and Roman Gutierrez. Varsity leaders were: Jose Gutierrez, Angel Aguirre, Talal Khan, Erick Pacheco, and joined by Alex Torres, Luis Avellaneda, Miguel Diaz, Joe Perez all going long.

Tigers 10th at Arcadia 4 x Mile
The Arcadia Invite 4 x Mile event did not go as well as we had hoped but valuable race experience was gained and lessons learned, so the evening was a success!

Talal Khan led off the Tigers with a 4:27.8 time and put the team in 4th place. The first leg was won by a Carlemont runner in 4:21. Sophomore, Jose Gutierrez was second leg taking off in a blazing 63 second first lap, he paid for it later, but still emerged with a PR, 4:37.6 mile and put the team in 11th place.  Angel Aguirre ran 4:38.3 as the third leg and left Josh with a lot of work to do as the anchor as the team dropped to 16th place after Angel's race and dropped an additional two spots when Josh stumbled in the crowded exchange zone. It was fun watching Josh move up all the way to 10th place by the end of his 4 laps, running 4:26.5 as the anchor!

Erick Pacheco led off with a 4:43 personal record clocking, handing off to Paul Goslin who ran a good leg while not feeling his best. Karin Zoldana raced well not letting any team go by him and giving the baton to Joe Perez who took advantage of this opportunity to run his PR by 6 seconds! The team took 7th in their heat.

The girls 4 x 1600 relay team beat their time from last year by 48 seconds with 3 of 4 of the girls running best times! Nadia Sandoval led off with a 5:43 PR (and gets her cell phone back ...) and let Sarah take over. Sarah ran a solid effort and handed off to April Wong who ran her PR, 5:46! Arlin Sandoval ran negative splits to run her best time and bring the baton home in 11th place.

Angel Aguirre suffered from a poor handoff and a bit of wind as did anchor, Jose Gutierrez but both runners hung to help the team to a solid result.

Josh at State Meet

Congratulations to Josh Linen on a phenomenal track season, and a great career at Valencia High School! He leaves as the new school record holder in the 3200 meter run and as a CIF Champion!

Josh placed 14th at the State Meet in Sacramento in the 3200 meter run. He did not run his best time, fighting a cold for two weeks, so 14th of 31 runners was awesome.

We hope to see Josh this summer on our runs and we look forward to watching him at Chico State next year!
