Alex and Steven finish 2nd and 4th in their race at Brea Invite!
The Tigers practiced great race plans on Saturday at the Brea Invite by running a smart first mile, then passing many opposing runners throughout the second half of the race!  The efforts were rewarded with 1st place plaques for both the Frosh/Soph team and the Varsity team!

Jose won by a large margin and a fine time of 17:05 with Luis coming in next in 18:00. Alex Torres traded the lead with a Brea runner, finished with a wicked kick to challenge for the win. Michael Turner in freshman race at OCC!
What a spectacular day the Tigers had at Orange County Championships! The varsity team time set a record of 76:47! Josh Linen set a record and set himself up as among the top runners in the State with his 14:38 time, also a Valencia record for this course! Of the 50 Tiger runners who competed at OCC, 41 set new personal records for 3 miles! Four Valencia runners earned All County honors as one of the top 7 in their age group: Josh Linen #2 senior, Angel Aguirre #3 junior, Talal Khan #6 junior, and Jose Gutierrez #3 sophomore!

The freshman got thing going at 8:00 am and when the race was over, all 21 starters had recorded their best times ever! The freshman are really starting to race and challenge themselves. Steven Suarez led the team with a 17:47 time and 32nd place followed by Sean Krinik in 35th, and Kent Woodling in 38th, all breaking 18:00! Chris Meneses, Irvin Rubio, Diego Baiza, Josh Rangel, Emmanuel V-Cruess, and George Ngo all broke the 19:00 barrier! The freshman team finished in 8th of 27 teams in the large school division.

The sophomore were next up with Alex Torres having a big day breaking into the 16's for the first time! His 16:57 was good for 15th place. Daniel Aldama ran a PR 17:51 and is a big jump from his 19:06 PR of last year! Also running best times were: Paul Goslin, Jeremy White, Brian Tsu, Daniel Mika, Andrew Bishtawi and Thomas Dong. The sophomores were 11th of 27 teams in the large school division.

The Varsity Sweepstakes race was so exciting with Josh pushing the pace from the start, only TJ Sullivan from Trabuco Hills was able to respond. Josh created gaps on the hills, showing his strength, but it was not enough on this day as TJ outkicked him within sight of the finish line! CIF Finals in November should be equally exciting. Angel Aguirre shined brightly for the team placing 7th overall with a 15:18 best time! Angel looked especially strong on the last mile! Talal Khan placed 13th in 15:26, his PR; sophomore, Jose Gutierrez was sensational too, with 20th place and a 15:38 time! Erick Pacheco was amazing! He is so determined and has improved so much this year and he picked a good meet to let the county know how good our #5 guy is! Nick Hariri had a great day, running a 20 second PR, 16:23 as our #6 runner. Luis Avellaneda learned the dangers of not eating breakfast and running...sideaches! He was tough to battle through it and better races will follow!

The JV racers are a really committed group of runners, they all have stepped it up at practice to be ready to help at the varsity level and to be the best they can be. Top performers were Joe Perez in 27th with a 17:04 PR time, Saurin Gandhi, Brett Miller and Miguel Diaz, all earning medals for their efforts. Also running best times were: My Nguyen, Abraham Pina and Juan Juaregui.

Varsity wins race, Hot at Mt SAC!
Erick Pacheco up Poopout
Erick had another great Varsity race!

Hot, dry and dusty described the racing conditions at Mt SAC on Saturday! It was the toughest course the Tigers have raced on this year with three featured hills. Despite the challenges and 87 degree temps, the Tigers had some shining moments!

Congratulations to the Varsity team who won their Division I race, scoring 64 points. Our top three Tigers placed in the top 20, with Josh placing 3rd, Talal Khan 9th, Angel Aguirre 10th and Erick Pacheco 18th. Jose Gutierrez was 28th as the 5th scorer. The varsity opted to not compete in the sweepstakes division this weekend in favor of de-emphasizing this Invite and to continue to work on team goals without pressure. The varsity team also ran in their training shoes to help prevent injuries.

Kent Woodling, a super hard worker, led our freshman to a 5th place finish in their Division I race! We had some great scoring packs with Kent in 14th, Sean Krinik in 21st, Steven Suarez in 22nd, and Diego Baiza in 27th. Irvin Rubio and Josh Rangel worked together finishing in 45th and 48th place. George Ngo and Henry Marquez finished together in 50th and 51st place with Bryan Escalante was within sight of the pair as he finished in 59th place. There were 161 runners in this race!

The sophomore race was highlighted by a ninth place finish by Alex Torres and a fine run by Paul Goslin who finished in 27th place. Jeremy White also was strong in 56th place as was Brian Tsu in 80th place. There were 191 runners in this race!

The JV runners were really inspiring as they had to wait around all day for their event and as usual gave their best efforts! Miguel Diaz and Joe Perez finished together to lead the group in 21st and 22nd place, Saurin in 34th, Brett Miller in 61st and My Nguyen in 70th place. A pleasant surprise was newcomer, Freddie Lopez who made Mt SAC his first cross country race and finished right behind My!

Athlete of the Meet: Kent Woodling, dedication and hard work pays off, our only medal winner in the freshman race!

Varsity and JV Boys win Empire League Championships!

It was a beautiful fall day with good competition at Irvine Park for the Empire League Finals, leading to league titles for the Varsity and the JV teams!

The Varsity team won its 4th straight Empire League Championship behind the front running of Josh Linen, Talal Khan, Angel Aguirre, and Jose Gutierrez who finished in the first four positions in the race. Josh Linen earned the League MVP by virtue of his victory and he, Talal, Angel and Jose all earned 1st team All-League honors. Erick Pacheco experienced some gastro-intestinal distress (too much peanut butter before racing) but hung on for 11th place to round out the scoring. Nick Hariri was the 6th runner in 16th place followed by Luis Avellaneda in 18th.

The JV was very exciting with Joe Perez, featuring his new flamboyant, aerodynamic hairdo, taking the lead in the second mile and never looking back! He broke into the 16's for the first time, 16:54 with the win. Miguel Diaz was 4th with another solid race, Brett Miller was very tough in 6th place, Saurin Gandhi was 7th and newcomer, Freddie Lopez was our #5 runner in 8th place. Recording PR's in this race were: Joe, Freddie, My Nguyen, Trevor Macauley, Adnan Aldwir, Jesse Escalante, and Juan Jauregui.

The frosh/soph race was very close with Cypress, the eventual Champions. Alex Torres, the winner of the League Challenge, positioned himself well but it was not enough on this day as he finished 4th. Paul Goslin ran his personal record time, 17:13, good for 8th place and a great breakthrough race for him! The freshman did their best to contribute as they scored 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th place for the Tigers. Kent Woodlings 17:26 placed him 10th place in the race, followed by Sean Krinik in 11th and Steven Suarez in 12th. Daniel Aldama was the 6th Tiger and 14th in the race, and Diego Baiza was our final scorer in 15th place.

Running PR's in the Frosh/Soph race were: Paul, Kent, Sean, Steven, Diego, George Ngo, Connor McCullough, Bryan Escalante, Ruben Aguilar, Daniel Mika, Mathias Riegg, Roman Gutierrez, Thomas Dong and Shawn Fadakar.

Athlete of the Meet: Joe Perez, winning with panache!

Tigers Advance to CIF Finals!
Talal and Angel up Reservoir
Talal and Angel place 8th and 9th!
The Tigers ran one of their best races of the season as a team posting a 40 second 1-5 gap and advancing to the CIF Finals as a heat winner! Six of the seven runners ran Mt SAC personal records and the All-time Team time record nearly went down with the 79:09 clocking, the record is 79:06!

The team was once again led by great front running from Josh Linen placing 3rd in 15:23. Angel Aguirre has been solid as a rock the entire season and had another fine run placing 8th in 15:47, followed by Talal Khan in 9th place, who is rounding into form and ready for a stellar November. Erick Pacheco always runs a tough Mt SAC and really put together a fantastic performance as our #4 runner at 16:03. Jose Gutierrez was right behind Erick in 18th place and is getting the hang of the downhills. Jose is one of the few runners who prefers uphills to downhills!

Nick Hariri placed 47th as our 6th runner and Luis Avellaneda, a sophomore, continues to gain experience for next year. He improved his Mt SAC time by 1:30 from last year!

CIF Finals on Saturday will determine which of the 7 teams of the 16 will advance to the State Meet in Fresno. The best is yet to come for this team!

Tigers Qualify for State Meet, 6th in Division I!
Luis on Airstrip
Luis ties his PR at CIF Finals!
Pack your bags for Fresno, the Tigers are running at the State Meet for the  7th year in a row (6 years with teams, one year with an individual)! This year is very special as it is the first year Valencia has competed in Division I, the toughest Division in the most competitive Section in the entire state!

The team was led by the 9th place effort by Josh Linen with his best Mt SAC time, 15:18 which ranks him 3rd on the All-Time list for that course! Talal Khan and Angel Aguirre finished together with fine clockings of 15:47, good for 29th and 30th place. Erick Pacheco continues to improve and was a scant 4 seconds back from Angel and Talal, 15:51 and 39th place. Jose Gutierrez had an uncharacteristic off-day finishing in 79th place. He is not fond of Mt SAC and will be happy next week on the undulating terrain of Woodward Park in Fresno! Luis Avellaneda tied his personal record, 16:52 and placed 100th, great development and improvement from this sophomore!

Our best is yet to be! It will be exciting to go against the very same teams from the Southern Section and improve on our 6th place showing. There will be additional strong teams from other sections like Davis and Madera to challenge the Tigers as well.

Thank you to all the "Superfans" and parents who came out to support the Tigers!

Tigers run to 8th place in Division I at State Meet!
Talal mile 2
Talal runs a PR at State, 35th place!
The 2006 Tigers prove to be the best in Valencia history! The team placed 8th in Division I at the State Meet with the fastest team time for the school by nearly 2 minutes. This year featured the strongest field of 23 teams at the State Meet and the Tigers rose to the occasion with their best race of the season when it counted!

Senior, Josh Linen finished his cross country season with a fine 15:33 clocking and 13th place in a very talented field averaging 5:03 per mile on the 5K course! Josh may have run faster at Orange County Championships, but this was his best race with the deepest group of runners and challenging 5k course. He ran with the Big Boys right from the gun and finished with the best of the best!

Talal Khan ran a personal record 15:56 (15:24, 3 mile time) in his best race of the year placing 35th! That makes him a top ten returner in Division I for next year. Angel Aguirre and Erick Pacheco finished in 58th and 59th place with Erick also running his best race of the year, 16:12 5K or 15:39 3 mile equivalent! Sophomore, Jose Gutierrez was our fifth scorer in 81st place and a 16:25 time (15:51, 3 mile). His time is just a little faster than Josh at the same age! Woo-hoo!

Sophomores, Luis Avellaneda and Alex Torres ran as our #6 and 7 runners with Luis running a personal record 17:13 5K or 16:39 3 mile, a PR by about 20 seconds for him! Alex tied his season best time in his debut into the top 7! It looks like we ran out of season for some of our runners as they are still improving!

Thanks to all the Superfans who made the trip up to cheer and learn the course (see pictures) and to all the parents who drove and helped: Mr. Ed Garcia, the Linens, Mr. Dennis McGuigan, Mrs. Donna McCullough and Mr. Goslin! It would appear our future is bright with so much support and enthusiasm from the younger runners and parents!
