Tigers have a great season, tough day at State
Geo at State
Geo led the Tigers at State

The tigers were hoping to have a go at top ranked Jesuit but it was not to be as injury, inexperience, and an off course error affected the outcome. Jesuit was superb as the Champions, Valencia went out with determination and effort but finished in 12th place. Of the top 10 athletes at the State Meet, 7 will return next year, a year faster, and with more experience at this level.

Geo and Talal led the team by placing 23rd and 35th. Angel Aguirre was our #3 runner in 73rd, followed by Josh Linen and Jose Gutierrez in 83rd and 96th place. Erik Miranda and Roman Pena were our #6 and #7 runner. Roman led at the mile, missed a turn, then was beset by a side stitch in the last mile, yikes! So, without our usual front runners, it was a tough day!

Though disappointed, this was the only real disappointment of an otherwise record breaking year. This group of athletes are the first CIF Champions since 1977, 2nd at Orange County Championships (best finish since 1986), are undefeated Empire League Champions (first time undefeated since joining the Empire League), and set a new team time record at Mt SAC (79:06) and most courses they competed on this season!

Tigers win CIF Division II Finals!
Geo last downhill
Geo hangs tough as our #2 runner!

Way to go Tigers! Congratulations on winning the first CIF Championship since 1977 and the first as a Division II team!  It was not an easy victory as the weather was harsh (hot, dry and dusty) and the team was not at full strength (missing Josh in the lineup). It makes the victory all the sweeter knowing our athletes overcame doubts and disappointments and prevailed by believing in each other and running with heart.

Roman Pena led the way with solid front running finishing in 6th place with a great time of 15:34 considering the high temperatures. Geo Popoca and Talal Khan regrouped near the end finishing together in 21st and 22nd place. Angel Aguirre had a tough time with the dust starting in the middle of the pack but hung in there, coming across the line in 46th place with freshman, Jose Gutierrez, not far behind in 49th place! Jose ran his Mt SAC pr today showing he is in great shape and ready for the State Meet. Erick Pacheco was our #6 runner and suffered a bit from too much "pasta power", still feeling a little full from the night before, lesson learned! Erik Miranda gave everything he had and finished near Erick, later joining the "hurl club" as evidence of an all out effort.

The team will travel to Fresno on the Friday after Thanksgiving to compete at the State Meet.

Click on the heading for complete results and check out the "photos" section for more pictures from the meet.

Thanks to all the Super Fans who came and cheered, it does make a big difference!

Tigers Advance to CIF Finals!
Talal Khan dyestat
Talal was our #2 man at CIF Prelims!

Our usual Top front runners struggled a little today but the rest of the team took up the slack and made sure the Tigers looked good moving on to the CIF Finals.

Roman ran in trainers and missed Josh up front but still ran a fine 15:49 to lead the team. Talal Khan tied his best effort at Mt SAC with a 16:00 time, Angel Aguirre was our #3 runner today with a 16:11 clocking, Geo also ran in trainers and looked very comfortable running 16:13, and Erik Miranda was the #5 guy in 16:22. Running varsity for the first time in his career, was sophomore, Erick Pacheco who did great with a 16:31 time as the #6 man, and Josh Linen was in the unusual position as #7 man in 16:45. He had an off day and will soon be back to form!

Thank you to all the parents and athletes who came to cheer, we will need everyone next week too!

Tigers go Undefeated in Empire League Competition!
JV start_2
The JV team takes off!

Roman Pena is coming into form at just the right time for the Tigers! His 15:01 win at the Empire League Finals led a sweep of the first four positions and helping the team run a 77:41 team time! Josh Linen was 2nd in 15:27, Talal Khan and Geovanni Popoca ran great together finishing in 3rd and 4th (15:37 and 15:40), Angel Aguirre was 7th as our 5th runner in 15:56. Erik Miranda ran to 12th place just before joining the "hurl club" (it was liver for breakfast that did him in) and freshman, Jose Gutierrez finished in 14th place running a fine 16:20.

Erick Pacheco ran with courage and panache leading the frosh soph to victory in a very close one with Orange Lutheran. Erick won the race in 16:21, Juan Valadez was 4th in 16:42, Brett Miller 10th, Alex Torres 11th and Eduardo Casio with another big PR came in 12th. Luis Avellaneda, Raj Patel, Noah Davisson, Jordan Lo, Jose Catalan, and Juan Juaregui all ran Personal Records to end their season.

The JV race was a battle between Nick Hariri and a Cypress runner from start to finish with Nick taking it in the end running 16:55 (I think it was the shaved legs that gave him the advantage). Adrian Meza stepped up and finished 3rd, Brian Sturgis 4th, Christian Franco 5th, and Saurin Gandhi 6th for a low score of 19 points.  Sammy Vazquez, Omar Arellano, Adnan Aldwir, and Chris White ran season best times.

Most Impressive PR: Roman Pena, Raj Patel, Sammy Vazquez
Biggest Surprise: FS victory over Orange Lutheran

Adrian, Christian and Brian help the JV's to 1st place.

The Varsity boys started the team out right by running the fastest team time by a Valencia team in its history, 79:06 with an impressive 43 second gap between 1st and 5th runner! That effort was the fastest Division II team time of the day. Josh Linen and Roman Pena continue to front run for the Tigers, finishing 1st and 2nd in the race in 15:26 and 15:32 unchallenged. Geovanni Popoca was 12th in 15:59, Talal Khan 14th in 16:00 and Angel Aguirre finished as our #5 runner in 16:09. Erik Miranda was solid in 38th, 16:30 and freshman, Jose Gutierrez made his high school varsity debut in 66th place and a fine 16:57!

The JV boys were equally impressive as the JV Division II Sweepstakes winners with a team time of 86:39. Nick Hariri led the team with a 2nd place, 16:55 effort followed by Christian Franco in 4th, 16:58; Brian Sturgis 5th, 17:07; Adrian Meza 9th, 17:33; and Igancio Lopez in 19th, 18:06. Saurin Gandhi and an improving, Gerardo Macias rounded out the top 7. Gerardo ran his best time of the year and Sammy Vazquez and Omar Arellano ran all time Personal Records this race!

The freshman placed 4th and were led by Paul Goslin who finished in 16th place (18:28) followed closely by Luis Avellaneda in 18th place (18:34). The team was missing Jose Gutierrez who raced Varsity and Alex Torres who had a family committment to attend. Many freshman stepped up though, and 7 Personal Records were set(!): Eduardo Casio, #3 runner this race 18:37; Daniel Aldama, #4 runner 19:04; Noah Davisson #5 runner for the team 19:23; Jeremy White; Brian Tsu; Jesus Ventura and Jose Catalan.

Erick Pacheco placed 3rd for the sophomores with a brilliant 16:51 effort! Brett Miller was 16th with a strong 17:33 run, Anthony Hernandez was our #3 runner this race and placed 63rd, Raj Patel ran a season best time as the #4 runner as did My Nguyen as our #5 runner. The team placed 6th. Juan Jauregui also ran a personal record at Mt SAC in this race!

Tigers win Empire League Challenge!
JV on start line
JV racers on start line, finish 1st at League Challenge

The tigers won the Challenge meet at all levels, FS, JV and Varsity in pretty adverse running conditions. The temperature at the Empire League Challenge was 98 degrees and the humidity 7%, very dry and windy. Our athletes are tough when the going gets tough!

The varsity race was pretty amazing with 5 Tiger athletes leading in the first mile. Josh Linen then separated from the pack and led all the way to the finish despite a late charge by teammate, Roman Pena. Josh finished in 15:41 and Roman in 15:43, great times considering the weather. Talal Khan continues to get stronger each week and was our #3 runner in 16:04 and Geovanni Popoca was solid as #4 finisher in 16:09. Angel Aguirre really stepped up and out kicked two rivals in the last 100 meters or so to finish 6th overall and stop the scoring at 16 points! Christian Franco was our 6th man, he finished in 11th place. Erik Miranda did not finish due to an asthma condition but he will be fine by Orange County Championships.

The JV race was just as successful with Nick Hariri taking off after about 400 meters and never looking back, he won the race by 40 seconds over 2nd place! Brian Sturgis was 3rd overall, followed by Adrian Meza in 4th, Ignacio Lopez in 5th, Saurin Gandhi in 6th, and Miguel Diaz in 7th. Miguel beat Joe so Joe had to shave his legs, he only cut himself once. Omar Reyes, Pedro Soto, Christian Montanez, and Omar Arellano all ran season best times, unexpected results there!

The Frosh/Soph team prevailed over good competition from Orange Lutheran and Cypress. Jose Gutierrez won the race with a "will to win" effort within sight of the finish over an Lutheran runner who had beat him at the Fall Classic. Erick Pacheco was 4th overall, Juan Valadez 5th, Brett Miller 7th, and Alex Torres in 11th. Anthony Hernandez, Chris Savinon, Jesse Escalante, and Juan Juaregui had especially standout performances.

Athlete of the Meet: Jose Gutierrez (FS winner), Nick Hariri (JV winner), Angel Aguirre (#5 runner for varsity)
Most Impressive PR: Omar Reyes, Christian Montanez, Miguel Diaz

Congratulations to this years group of Tigers who placed first at the Sunny Hills Invite for the first time since we have attended the meet! Our top 5 runners contributing to the 80:30 team time were: Roman, Josh Linen 15:55, Geovanni Popoca 16:14, Talal Khan 16:15, and Angel Aguirre 16:29. The course was tough as it was hilly and on wet, dense grass but still 9 athletes ran personal records.

Roman, Geovanni Popoca and Erik Miranda finished 1st, 3rd and 5th in the senior race. Martin Nguyen and David Stack ran PR's in the senior race while Adrian Meza, Ignacio Lopez, and Craig Wojciak all improved their times from last week.

Alex Torres improved his time again this week to 18:42 to earn 11th place in the freshman race. Personal records were run by Jose, Alex, Jeremy White and Brian Tsu in the freshman race. Ian Chen and Deep Kahlon challenged each other the whole race and sprinted in with Deep edging Ian at the end! Angelo Lopez finished his first race with a smile.

The juniors were led by Josh Linen's 15:55 performance to win his race and run the second fastest time of the day for the Tigers. Miguel Diaz, Chris White improved their times from last week while Adnan Aldwir ran a PR along with Brian Sturgis.

The last race of the day was an exciting showdown with between a pack of 5 runners emerging after the mile. Tigers finish 2nd Overall at Laguna Hills Invite!
Josh uphill all alone
Josh is all alone on mile 2
Great weather and great racing for the Tigers at the Laguna Hills Invite.

The freshman placed 3rd with a highlight of Jose Gutierrez leading after the first mile but tragically, missing a key turn and running an additional half mile or so. We know he is fast and will show his true form next week! He still battled back to earn 28th place and a medal! Alex Torres finished 9th, the top freshman with his best time. Paul was 12th, Noah 20th, Jeremy 36th and Daniel 40th to all earn medals. Good effort to Deep and Brian in their first races!

The sophomore race was really exciting with Talal Khan, Angel Aguirre and Erick Pacheco leading the race at the mile. Talal and Angel went on to place 1st and 2nd with Erick a strong 6th place. Brett Miller and Trevor Macauley also earned medals in the sophomore race. Jordan Lo recorded his All Time Personal Best time in this, his first race of the season! Matt Grismer improved 5 minutes over last year at this same event!

The juniors were led by Josh Linen who ran in the lead alone most of the race and finished with an impressive 15:57 time. Nick Hariri was 10th to help the juniors to 2nd place as a team. Brian Sturgis was a wonderful surprise as he is new to the team, but clearly a fine athlete, placing 17th in 17:51 in his first race ever! Saurin Gandhi and Joe Perez also took home medals. Sammy Vazquez ran a PR to start his season.

The seniors finished 2nd place in the team competition and featured a battle between a Newport Harbor racer, Geo and Roman. In the end, Geo finished 2nd and Roman 3rd with Geo running the 2nd fastest time of the meet! Erik was solid in 13th, and Christian Franco and Cameron Chubbuck earning medals for the efforts.

The Novice boys did great in their first race with Adnan leading the pack of our finishers: Sithu Zaw, Martin Nguyen and David Stack. We also learned that no one should follow Martin in races...
