Great Start to Season at Laguna Hills Invite!
Jake Brad Ivan
Freshman, Jake, Brad and Ivan all have great races!
Congratulations to 3 Tigers who ran personal bests at the Laguna Hills Invitational to start the 2007 season: Roman Gutierrez, Ruben Aguilar and Daniel McGuigan! The team finished 6th overall against very tough teams at this early season challenge.

The freshman race was highlighted by a 2nd place finish by Tayyab Khan, 4th place by Troy Czegledy, 19th place Brad Cooke and our final medal winner, Jake Perez in 34th place. The freshman were all very smart racers, starting conservatively, then passing runners throughout the race.

The sophomores were led by much improved, Roman Gutierrez who finished 6th. The sophomore group as a whole was much stronger than last year as evidenced by top 20 finishes by Roman, Sean Krinik in 10th, Kent Woodling in 14th, and Steven Suarez in 17th. Ruben Aguilar and Diego Baiza also took home hardware!

Jose Gutierrez was our top junior who dueled for the win with the number 1 runner from Dana Hills. Jose was the Tigers top finisher of the day in 15:59 and placed 2nd! Alex Torres was 20th, Luis Avellaneda 26th and Paul Goslin was 27th for a nice pack.

The seniors were led by Angel Aguirre in 5th place running 16:15, followed by Talal Khan in 6th at 16:18 and Erick Pacheco in 16:42, good for 19th place.

It was a very good first meet featuring smart racing, strong finishes and great team support!

Tigers Place 1st at Sunny Hills Invite!
Ivan Hernandez water
Ivan Hernandez in freshman race!
The "Sunny Hills Invite" could have been named the "Muddy Hills Invite"! The rain, mud, water crossings, slips and slides made for memorable racing, no doubt! It was also a great meet for the Tigers, with 26 runners improving their times from the Laguna Hills Invite, 12 runners recording all time personal records (PRs) and 9 freshman running in their first race!

The seniors got things rolling with Angel Aguirre and Talal Khan placing 3rd and 4th with fine 15:36 clockings, top Tiger times. Erick Pacheco placed 10th to help the Tigers with a scoring time. Ivan Cisneros, Jesse Escalante, Juan Jauregui and Omar Hernandez all improved over a minute from the first race to record PR's!

The freshman race featured the worst weather of the day, rain, slippery mud and water crossings!  Tayyab Khan placed 5th, Troy Czegledy was 8th and Brad Cooke was 21st, all taking home medals. All 16 freshman emerged with smiles and a unique race experience!

The juniors had the slowest race conditions of the day with the mud becoming very thick, slick and sticky. Jose Gutierrez avenged a defeat by placing 1st this year and beating the runner who outran him last year! Luis Avellaneda stepped up this week, placing 10th and Alex Torres placed 13th.

The sophomores continue to develop as a class and individually. Last year, our highest placing in the freshman race was 25th, this year, our top sophomores placed 6th, Roman Gutierrez and 7th, Sean Krinik! Running PR's were: Roman, Sean, Steven Suarez, Diego Baiza, Ruben Aguilar, Josh Rangel, Bryan Escalante, Marcus Carline, Daniel McGuigan and Jackson Keller.

Tigers win at Brea Invite!
FS with Award
It was the perfect morning to run Saturday at the Brea Invite, cool, sunny and a challenging 5k course! The Tigers seized the day, and were rewarded with a Varsity 1st place and a 2nd place for the FS team. Congratulations to Talal Khan who was named the "Male Athlete of the Meet" by recording the fastest time of the day!

Freshman, Troy Czegledy got the team started on the right track by winning the FS Race #1 with a huge personal record (after converting the 5k time to 3 miles)! Ruben Aguilar, Bryan Escalante and Josh Rangel also finished in the top ten, also all running PR's. Brad Cooke, Jake Perez, Daniel Diaz, Jesus Escobar, Moises Gonzalez, Calvin Ferniza, Victor Varela and Patrick Simpelo also improved their best times in a tough race featuring 220 runners!

Kent Woodling had a great day, finishing 3rd in Race #3 with Diego Baiza in 6th place, and Tayyab Khan stepping up to run with the "Big Boys" finishing in 9th place. Sean Krinik had a breakout day as our top FS runner of the day with his 3rd place performance in the competitive Race 5, all #1 and #2 runners from all teams. Our top 5 FS runners of Sean, Kent, Diego, Steven Suarez and Troy combined for 2nd place, 15 seconds behind Brea.

The Varsity #1 and #2 runners of Talal Khan and Angel Aguirre were stellar with strong competition, finishing in 1st and 5th place. Jose Gutierrez won the #3-5 runners race easily with Erick Pacheco coming in 3rd and Luis Avellaneda in 12th place. The final race of the day featured Alex Torres running to 7th place and Jesse Escalante running a PR! The top five Varsity runners of Talal Khan, Angel Aguirre, Jose Gutierrez, Erick Pacheco and Luis Avellaneda combined to triumph over a very good, Vista Murrietta team and the team time was 1 minute faster than last year! Woo-hoo!

FS pack at League Challenge

The Tigers continue to show improvement and to begin their quest to win the Empire League Championship with a fine showing on a warm afternoon at Irvine Regional Park. The Frosh/Soph scored only 16 points and were led by race winnner, Tayyab Khan in a personal record, 17:09. Steven Suarez, Troy Czegledy, Kent Woodling and Diego rounded out the top 5 scorers. 22 frosh/soph runners ran best times in this event!

Alex Torres won the JV race, leading the entire way! Paul Goslin sprinted in to pass all but Alex, Ivan Cisneros was 5th, Jess Escalante 7th and My Nguyen was 10th to lead the JV team to victory. Jesse and Juan Jauregui ran PR's in this race!

The varsity featured breakthrough runs by Sean Krinik and Luis Avellanda to really tighten up the pack at the right time in the season! Jose Gutierrez, Talal Khan and Angel Aguirre took care of business up front, placing 1-3 with Sean kicking it in for 8th place and Luis placing 10th for the Tigers.

Connor McCullough mile 1
Connor McCullough gets stronger every week!
The 2007 Orange County Championship day began on a dark, rainy morning bus ride to Irvine Park. It was awesome seeing everyone there on time, enthusiastically ready to go despite dismal conditions! The Tigers were rewarded with many highlights to the day, despite the disappointment of a rain shortened course.

The Varsity team finished 3rd in the Sweepstakes race in a very close battle with eventual winner, Dana Hills and Trabuco Hills. Talal Khan ran to win and pushed the pace from the start and finished with a great time and 3rd place overall! Jose Gutierrez made top 10 and earned All-County honors as did Talal for the seniors. Angel Aguirre was 19th, and Erick Pacheco is ba-a-a-a-ck finishing in 23rd place. Luis Avellanda was forced off course early on but fought back to finish up as our 5th scorer in 47th place. The way he was moving, he just needed a little more real estate to catch the Dana Hills and Trabuco Hills #5 runners! Sean Krinik and Alex Torres contributed to the varsity showing as our #6 and 7 runners.

The freshman were 8th place out of 25 teams in the Large School division with Tayyab Khan placing a strong 3rd and Troy Czegledy 10th. Breakthrough runs were made by Jesus Escobar, Jordan Steyer, Jordan DeHaven, Daniel Diaz, Calvin Ferniza and Victor Varela.

The sophomore team was led by Diego Baiza in 13th place and the team was 5th of 22 teams! Kent Woodling was 14th in the race followed by Steven Suarez in 26th, Roman Gutierrez in 34th and Ruben Aguilar in 36th. Big breakthrough runs were made by Diego, Marcus Carline, and Mathias Riegg.

Despite an asthma attack, Paul Goslin still led the JV team, followed closely by Ivan Cisneros with My Nguyen, Jesse Escalante and Juan Jauregui rounding out the scoring. The JV team did a great job taking times and helping all day before the raced at 11:30, what a fine group of young men!

Jordan, Jesus, Manny Moises, Kevin Huang and Calvin Ferniza all ran personal bests!

Alex Torres made a big breakthrough evidenced by his 14th place and a PR of 16:18 as did Paul Goslin, 20th place and a PR 16:39.

Roman Gutierrez is the 2007 Frosh/Soph League Champion! He ran a personal record, 16:36 which is amazing since his best 2006 time was 21:39! The Tigers went 1st through 8th in this event. The JV team placed 1st at the Challenge meet and 2nd at the Finals to a very strong Cypress team, good for 1st overall. Ivan Cisneros led the Tigers with his 5th place showing, running a PR for his efforts! Also running best times were: Josh, Bryan, Connor, Juan Jauregui, Brian Tsu, and Omar Hernandez.

Paul Alex Luis Valley Loop
Paul Alex and Luis on the Valley Loop

Valencia won their Prelim heat and advance to the CIF Finals to fight for the top 7 spots next week!

Talal Khan once again led the team with a unstressed 2nd place finish. Angel Aguirre, Erick Pacheco and Jose Gutierrez all finished in the top 20 with Luis Avellaneda in 21st. Luis had a great day, running his best time at Mt SAC and really closing the 1-5 team time gap (:43 seconds this week). Erick Pacheco looks really sharp and ready to go, and Angel is getting more and more comfortable with faster paces. Alex Torrres and Paul Goslin stepped up, took a chance to help the team with aggressive mile splits!

The team took care of business this week and with a few strategic adjustments and our usual "Champions run their best when it counts" philosophy, we hope to return to Fresno and the State Championship! This is a really special group of athletes who have had their share of weirdness this season (fire, wind, smoke, rain!), but have kept their eyes on our goal and have been deterred by nothing thus far!

Jose runs tough at CIF Finals!

Woo-hoo, back to the State Meet at Woodward Park in Fresno, pack your bags! The Tigers finished 5th at CIF Finals Division I, set a school record for the Mt SAC course team time, and make it to the State Meet for the 8th year in a row!

Talal Khan placed 15th to lead the team followed by stepped up performances by Angel Aguirre, Erick Pacheco, Jose Gutierrez and Luis Avellaneda. Our top 5 combined for a record setting team time of 78:20, breaking the previous record of 79:06! Angel, Erick, Jose and Luis all set personal records for Mt SAC as well. Our challenge was to run a smart first mile, then make a statement on mile 3 passing as many runners as possible, which was brilliantly executed!

We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to run at the State Meet, it is a great course for us and an honor to represent our school and the Southern Section. Let's have a great short week of practice, then off to Fresno!
