Ravens Beginning
The RAVENS were "hatched" in 1987 by Tom Overstreet. Our first year, the team played in the Continental Interstate Football League. That year, seven Raven players "went up" during the NFL strike. Five were part of the 1987 World Champion Washington Redskins, helping to win early season games that were instrumental in the Redskins trip to the Super Bowl. In 1988, the team joined the Mason-Dixon Football League (MDFL), and played for the League Championship, losing to the Hampton Pirates.
In November of 1988, Overstreet left the team to be closer to his business in the Hampton Roads area and the operation was turned over to Hal & Mary Lockhart.
Since that time, we have developed a philosophy that may be unique to our team. We do not recruit outside the Richmond area. All our recruiting is by word of mouth, done mostly by our players. We consult players about every aspect of our operation.
Each year we try to take a week-end educational trip. We have played the California Bears in Los Angeles, traveled to Canada to play the Toronto Raiders, and to Canton, Ohio where our players visited the NFL Hall of Fame and played the Northern Ohio Pride. In 1992, we hosted a Russian team - the Moscow Giants. In 1997, we toured the Carolina Panthers stadium and facilities and traveled on to Morganton, NC to play the Catawba Hornets.
