Field Specifications
If your local league is looking to update, or build new, your fields
here are the guidelines from Little League.
The responsibility for the upkeep of the fields at a local Little
League program belongs to the local league board of directors. In many
areas, the local league has an agreement with a municipality to
maintain the fields.
Generally, the distance between basepaths on fields for 12-year-olds
and below in baseball and in all divisions of softball is 60 feet. A
local Little League board of directors may opt to use a 50-foot diamond
in the Tee Ball divisions. The distance in all divisions of baseball
for 13-year-olds and up is 90 feet, with a local league option to
shorten the distance to 75 feet for Junior League Baseball regular
season play.
The pitching distance for divisions of baseball for 12-year-olds and
below is 46 feet. The pitching distance for the divisions of softball
from the Major Division up to Big League is 40 feet, and 35 feet for
Minor League. Pitching distance for divisions of baseball for
13-year-olds and up is 60 feet, 6 inches, with a local league option to
shorten the distance to 54 feet for Junior League Baseball regular
season play.
Distance from the back of home plate to the outfield fence is a local
league option, but the following distances are recommended: baseball,
12-year-olds and below, 200 feet; baseball, 13-year-olds and up, 300
feet; girls softball, all divisions, 200 feet; boys softball, Senior
League and below, 200 feet; boys softball, Big League, 250 feet.
All dugouts must be protected by a fence or screen.
Lights, if used, must meet the minimum standards required by Little
League. Standards are published in the Operating Manual.
Selection of fields for Tournament Play is solely the responsibility of
the District Administrator(s) for levels below regional.
