Minnesota Swimming

Heh VAC swimmers!

Just got back from the Men's Big 10 Championships in Minneapolis. Minnesota won in the most exciting swim meet I have ever seen. The meet came down to the last relay event. Indiana was ahead of Minnesota by 5 points. Minnesota had to win and Indiana had to take 3rd or worse. Minnesota beat Northwestern (including Bubholz and Grievers!) by about 2 feet in Big 10 record time and Indiana took 3rd! Minnesota won the meet by 3 points - 720 to 717. Wow! College swimming has its rewards.

VAC swimmer Neil Osten took 6th in 100 Fly, 9th in 50 Free and 11th in 100 Free plus finished 2nd in 2 sprint relays. He scored 28 individual and 34 relay points to help Minnesota. The meet saw several Big 10 records and 5 50 Free swims in less than 20 seconds!

Looking forward to the NCAA's at Minneapolis March 24 - 26. Hope to see you there. If you go, call the U of M ticket office and ask for Mike to get you tickets in Section 5 which is being held for Minnesota fans.

Hi, my name is Kim Wood and I am impressed on how well your team has progressed. My dad started up the Verona natatorium back in the old days and I swam with the club until our coach switched teams and we followed. Good luck to all your swimmers.

Please send my congratulations to Randy on his continued efforts in USS and on Neil Walkers success. It all started with Randy's nurturing and the solid foundation he laid with Neil. I remember Randy telling me his goal was to have a swimmer qualify for senior nationals. I also remember thinking that was a pipe dream. How wonderful wrong I was!

As Randy's assistant coach too many years ago to admit, I learned more about swimming than I had learned cumulatively when swimming for an olypic coach, a Big Ten collegiate coach and a top high school in Madison.

Alas, I had to teach Randy about proper political perspective and how to fish (at least for muskies).

It is great to see the VAC web page. Best of luck, hope our paths cross soon.
