A look back at the growth of UVC
UVC was founded in December of 2000. This club was created by Ricky Schultz in an effort to provide both players and coaches another option for club volleyball in the Orlando area. The first season started in January of 2001 with a mere fifteen players trying out. With these players two teams were formed. A fifteen and under team coached by Keri Schultz and Elizabeth Cross and a sixteen and under team coached by Ricky Schultz. As the word got out later in the season several more players were added to our rosters.
Our first summer camp was held at our parent sponsor, the Osceola YMCA. This was a three-day camp held June 22-24 and consisted of 20 girls. With a camp staff consisting of three coaches we were able to provide a great deal of individual instruction. This was thought to be a success because we were able to enhance these players? skills and open up the possibilities in volleyball for many new players.
By December of 2001 the word had spread about Ultimate Volleyball Club. We had a great turn out for the parents meeting and try-outs for our 2002 club season. This year we grew to three teams and five coaches. With a total of thirty-one girls, we were able to form a fourteen?s, sixteen?s and a seventeen?s team. This season proved to be very successful with the sixteen?s team winning three tournaments and the seventeen?s team placing second in the AAU Regionals in Jacksonville.
We also held two sessions of Wednesday night instructional league during the 2002 season. This league was designed for beginners to intermediate level players and offered instruction and training in all aspects of the game. The first session ran from January to March and consisted of 23 athletes, both male and female. The second session ran from March to May and consisted of 21 athletes, both male and female.
After having our first summer camp in the Kissimmee area, the following year we decided to have it here in Orlando at our regular practice facility. Our 2002 summer camp was held at Southwest Middle School from June 21-23. We again were able to reach more athletes and had a wonderful turn out. Twenty-nine girls and boys spent three days with us learning the skills of volleyball and having lots of fun.
The 2003 club season proved to be our greatest success yet. This year we became incorporated, forming our own non-profit organization without the sponsorship of the YMCA. We were able to expand yet again with a total of 4 teams and 7 coaches. Our 14 Navy, 16 Navy and 16 Travel teams played in many AAU tournaments throughout the Central Florida area while our 18 Travel team played in both AAU and USAV, which is a higher level of competition. This season was our first year with high school seniors and we are very proud to announce that several members of our 18?s team have gone on to play volleyball in college. Along with our club teams we continued to provide many new players with an opportunity to learn the game through our instructional league and summer camp.
As we enter the 2004 club season we hope to continue our success. This year we are planning to add a 12 & under team to go along with our 14 & under, 16 & under, 16 Travel and 18 Travel teams. Both the 16 Travel and 18 Travel teams will be playing in USAV tournaments this year. Our coaching staff is also expanding with the addition of several college players. With their experience they will be able to help provide our players with the skills and knowledge that it takes to play at the college level.
At Ultimate Volleyball Club we are committed to developing self-confidence, motivation and teamwork among young athletes through the sport of volleyball and expect to do nothing less. Good luck to all of our past, present and future volleyball athletes, may your volleyball experiences be as rewarding as our own!
