UTS 2006 Organizational Chart
Take a look at the new organizational chart for UTS, complete with ten board positions.

2006 Fall UTS Org chart

New UTS Organizational Chart

Friday, August 25

UTS Is Ready For A Brand New Board
We are just a couple of weeks away from having a brand new board. Hmmm, that reminds me of a James Brown song from the 70’s. The new board will have ten positions instead of the seven it has had since inception. This will help to more equally distribute the workload of running this league now that it has grown to its current gianormous (pronounced “Jye nor muss”) size. Fortunately for this program, we have plenty of terrific energetic volunteers ready to pitch in and get the job done. Of course, I think this is the case with most leagues, but often we fail to realize that if we would only open our arms to accepting the help, many people would step up and take a hunk of the responsibility. Unwittingly, we often deny access simply because we fail to let people know what we need help with.
Most of us like to help out. We want to be a part of the process. Often, we just do not know where we fit in, where we can be the most help, or where to start. I can identify with this, as I think we all can. However, give someone a job to do with a clear goal and some help to get them started and they will run with it.

To that end, the old board created the structure for the new board along with an organizational chart to help define the roles. To further assist the successful transition, some of the key board members have agreed to stay on if nominated and elected. In particular, Treasurer Gene Guernsey has agreed to stay on one more year if the masses invite him back. Gene has done a rock solid job over the last two years and the new board will not have to be concerned about this key position for another year. Mike Galt may be persuaded to take a position other than president if needed, and a couple of us will continue providing services regardless of board status. One does not have to be a board member to have a big impact on the program as Jodi Mitchell (photo day and trophies) and Danielle Helfrich (uniforms) did this year. All we had to do was ask and these two volunteers were happy to champion those projects. Plus, they did a fantastic job! Speaking for myself, I would rather stay off of this new board, but I would happily continue providing the same services (website, e-mail/mail communications, database management, registration process, and 6U director) I have been providing if the new board would like me to. It is my understanding that others, like Mark Becker feels the same way and is planning to stay on as the UIC regardless of board status. Galt and I will continue to attend the various meetings with CrossTown and UGSI for a while, accompanying the new board members until they feel comfortable.

The reason I and some of the other sitting members would like to move off of this new board is simple. There are plenty of very energetic, imaginative, and industrious people that are interested in board positions. Even better, most of them are parents of some of our youngest players and this is a great situation for obvious reasons. Our organization will benefit tremendously from this “fresh blood” and I look for them to continue the success we’ve had over the last couple of years. Further, I look for them to do things that we hadn’t even thought about. It is my opinion that this program is just getting started and these new custodians will be the ones to guide it to its maturity.

Their biggest challenge will be to ensure that the organization stays true to its mission while it grows up. I’ll have more on that topic on another day. I’ll see you around the (Fall) ballpark…
