10 & Under All Stars Take UGSI 1st Place Championship
The 10 & under All Star team traveled to Hobart, Indiana to participate in the UGSI Classic All Star Tournament on July 24-26, 2009.
Starting off the tournament on Friday night they were matched up aginst Lowell. The girls were excited and ready to play. This game was won with a 10-2 victory keeping them in the winners bracket. The next game was scheduled for 8am against Hobart who had just won the PJM Tournament the weekend prior.
The girls were once ready to play and the bats were hot, taking a victory over a very good team was rewarding to all. Final score of 10-1 over Hobart.
The next match was aginst Dyer late on Saturday. UT got the lead and maintained it until the final innings where they got a tough lost of 8-7 sending UT into the loosers bracket.
The 10U girls were good at keeping their spirits high and knowing they could take the loosers bracket, but knew it could be a long day doing it. They would have to face all the teams that they had just sent to the loosers bracket again. They played Lowell again and won 14-5. The next game was Hobart and they won 11-1.
UT would now face the same team that had sent them into the loosers bracket earlier. UT jumped early and took the lead never looking back beating Dyer after a very good game 8-3.
This win against Dyer sent them to the championship game against the undefeated Portage All Star team. UT had not played Portage yet this year and was looking forward to the match up. UT knew they would have to beat Portage twice if they wanted the 1st Place title of UGSI All Star Champions.
Portage won the flip and took home team adavantage. This did not scare the girls and they were ready to play. They jumped on the board immediately and racked up 8 runs in the 6 innings giving up none. UT won the first game 8-0 over Portage.
Now UT was in the "what if" game and UT knew they would have to really dig deep to play their 5th game that day. This is when you saw the girls mature and come together as a team. They knew they were only 1 game away and in 90 minutes it would all be over. This game stayed very close with Portage battling UT for the first 3 innings. All of a sudden you saw the UT bats explode and run after run was pushed in giving UT the victory after 6 innings.
The final score was 11-7 with Union Township taking the title of 2009 UGSI 1st Place Champions
Great Job Girls and everyone is very proud of you!!

UT Nets Another 1st Place Victory at Mary Conner
Union Township sent 3 teams to compete in some pretty intense competition at this years 10U Mary Conner. A total of 21 teams had entered the tournament which was hosted in Cedar Lake, Indiana this year. The UT girls were all excited to represent UT after the 8U and 12U girls had done so well the weekend prior.
The competition was strong and each UT team did their part in wearing down the opposing teams. In the end, one UT team stayed in the winners bracket and represented UT as a whole in the championship game on Sunday.
Hamady's Tasers came out on Friday night to play Lowell. As they warmed up in the field Jessie Orlich sprained her ankle and was rushed to the emergency room. She would not be able to play the rest of the tournament, but was definately there in her spirit. She came to the games on Saturday and Sunday to cheer her team on to victory. Hamady thought the odds would be stacked against his team as Delaney Subart boarded a plane for Florida and Orlich was out injured. This left the team with only 8 players and they had to make the call to the 8U division. Moving players Lyric Green and Serena Wagner up to play in 10U tournament.
Saturday morning kicked off at 8am against St. John. They would win and win big keeping the momentum moving forward with another game on Saturday against Cedar Lake.
Gianna Hamady and Trinity Evans pitched their hearts out with strikeout after strikeout. These two pitchers would compliment each other by throwing 3 shutout games and 2 no hitters. They only gave up a total of 5 runs the whole tournament between the two of them.
Kadie Spoor would become the utility player and play any position that was needed to win. Angelise Vukin caught over twenty innings in the heat and had several clutch hits to drive in runs. Brittney Ittersagen's defensive glove was on with key outs at 1st base and 3rd base and with a bat that was smoking as well. Ellie Joll pulled out of her two game slump and was on fire with the bat and stole base after base. Gabby Gilliana had several nice hits throughout the weekend and scored 3 times. Kailee Rootkie came to the Mary Conner without a hit all year and ended up hitting the ball 7 times and scoring the winning run against Lowell. Serena Wagner stole several bases and had a shot out to the outfield off a 10U pitcher. Lyric Green our youngest girl stole several bases throughout the tournament and pinched ran for the catcher on several occasions. During the championship game with runners on, Green smashed a line drive to center field which gave her a RBI.
By the look in each girls eyes after that win, one could tell that they were very satisfied with the victory at the Mary Conner and also the victory with themselves after they put in so much time and effort like they have done this year.
St John Storm would end up taking home 2nd Place which was hard fought for them The girls appeared to be exhausted, but were still a class act all the way to the end.

Union Township Sweeps the 8U Mary Conner
Last weekend Union Township sent two of its 8U teams to the Mary Conner in St. John and they came back home with 1st place and 2nd place. This was a great job and we are very proud of both teams. Below is short story from Coach Coto:
Edmond's 8U Firecrackers won 1st place in the MC classic going undeafted all weekend. The only close game was against Jenn Greens 8U team (another UT team) who got 2nd place in the tournament. Pitching by Serenia and Paige. All girls from both teams worked hard and had a great time. Kenny and Jeff and fun driving from St. John with the 8us to Griffith with the 12Us.

12U Coto faces Griffith Morton for the Second Time
Union Township sent Coto's 12U Bearcats to Mary Conner in Griffith this past weekend to face off with their opponent Griffith Morton on Saturday morning. With the 8U playing in St John, I (Jack Hamady) was asked to assist Coach Rich Aytes during Saturdays Tournament while Coto and Edmond were with the 8U girls. This was a pleasure to work with these girls again and you can see the perserverance of each and everyone of these girls. A great bunch of girls and I wish them the best.
Coto's Bearcats were faced against Morton for the second weekend which they had lost the championship game to at the UT Spring Fling. The girls came out and jumped on them with a lead and kept the lead until the final inning where Morton scored and sent Coto's 12U to the loosers bracket. These girls never gave up and kept going all day Saturday, which continued into Sunday as well. The stage was set again with Coto's 12U and Morton's team in the chanmpionship game.
On a side note, the UT girls had the will that they would get a win against Griffith Morton soon or later. The next day (Monday) during regular season play they finally got their win!!
Great job girls!!
Here is a short story from Coach Coto:
Well this weekend was the best. Coto's 12 U bearcats got second in the MC classic. Pitching by Robyn Coto and Kayla Aytes both girls were outstanding. Both girls pitched about 15 innings each only giving up a few runs per game. This is their second tournament placement in 2 weeks. They also got 2nd in the Spring Fling Last week. The Bearcats lost the 1st game on Saturday then won the next 5 to play the Griffith Morton team who beat them last week out of first place.

1st Annual Union Township Spring Fling
UT hosts their 1st Spring Fling this weekend May 29-31, 2009.
10 & Under
The 10U kicked off the tournament on Friday night hosting teams from Griffith, Lake Ridge and Valparaiso. The brackets were up with 8 teams in the 10U bracket with Union Township having three of their own teams competing for the Spring Fling Title.
As the games progressed Union Township was represented well in the 10U class with all three of their teams. Fields, Hamady and Loretto would all end up playing each other by the end of the tournament. All three of these teams looked very strong as they played and would end up taking two of the three titles in the end. Hamady's Tasers played Loretto's Lightning for third place on Sunday afternoon. It was a very good game all the way to the end and Loretto would end up sending Hamady's Tasers home early with their only loss and a 3rd place title.
This would set up the championship game with Valparaiso Phoenix, who won the loosers bracket and Loretto's Lightning who did not have a loss yet.
In the end Loretto's Lightning would prevail and take the championship game beating Valparaiso's Phoenix receiving the 1st place trophy and the Phoenix getting 2nd place.
12 & Under
The 12U division had teams from Crown Point, Griffith, Morton and Union Township. UT had Coto's Bearcats and Gallaghers Vikings competing as well.
12U kicked off the games on Saturday morning with Union Township fighting all the way to Sunday afternnon where Gallagher's Vikings were finally elliminated after a great showing. Coto's Bearcats would continue on to the championship game with no losses.
UT girls stood by watching Griffith and Crown Point battling the whole time. At the end of a great game, Crown Point was awarded 3rd place after a tough loss, which sent Griffith off to the championship game against Coto's undefeated Bearcats.
Griffith still had their momentum from last game scoring several runs against the Bearcats. Coto's Bearcats continued to play good defense and scored some runs as well, but were unable to catch up in the end. They continued to fight all the way to the last inning with a deliberate pickle on 3rd base which scored Emily Edmond. In the end the Bearcats were unable to score enough runs with the clock running out.
Both of these teams had a enjoyable Sunday playing the game that they love with great weather.
Griffith won the 12U Division 1st Anual Spring Fling with Coto's Bearcats receiving 2nd Place.
I would like to thank everyone who participated and all that helped all weekend.
We had several parents and board members that did a fantastic job keeping this event moving the way that it did. Jeff Coto who organized the event and his wife Kim Coto who ran the concessions did a excellent job. Kenny Edmond, Rich Aytes, Matt Wagner and Christy Subart did a great job on the fields and keeping them up throughout the tournament.
Also, thanks to Jim Brocksmith our Umpire in Charge and all his great staff who umpired all weekend with great consistent calls.
Thanks again Jeff for giving these girls the oportunity to play a regular season tournament preparing them for the furure tournaments.
I look forward to seeing everyone throughout the year!

Union Township nets 3 victories in opener against Schererville
8U
Schererville invites Jen Szymanski's 8U Team (Advanced Communications) to Stephens Park to play the first game of the year. Jen's team leads Union Township to their first victory of the season. The girls played very tough and ended with a 4-1 victory against their opponent.
10U
Hamady's 10U (Custom Dosing) were also invited for opening day in Schererville. The girls had a lot of butterflies, but soon lost them as they punched in run after run. Getting a quick start, lead off batter Gianna Hamady (2-2) started the game with a hit which rattled the pitcher. Kadie Spoor advanced Hamady with a sacrifice to third base. Custom Dosing was unable to score that inning stranding a runnner on third. They returned in the second inning with Angelise Vukin (1-1) starting off with a hit and stealing two bases. Delaney Subart (1-2) came up to bat for her first time in the 10 & under division. Standing in the batters box with confidence Subart smashed a hit and scored Vukin to put them on the board first. This kept the momentum moving forward. Ellie Joll (1-1) who has never played organized softball had her first hit driving in two runs.
Trinity Evans started the game pitching facing 8 and striking out 6 in two innings. Gianna Hamady relieved Evans in the third inning facing 8 and striking out 6. Only one hit was given up to Schererville throughout the four innings which was a great start for both pitchers.
In the end Hamady's (Custom Dosing) won 14-0.
12U
Coto brought his 12U Danish Maid Butter to Schererville as well. Slipping past his oponent with ease. Mikala Plank hit a triple, with Emily Edmond and Hanna Houghtaling having doubles. JoJo had a single with a bunt which put a total of 17 runs on the board.
As for the pitching it was shared by all three pitchers who displayed great talent. Robin Coto pitched along with Hanna Houghtaling during the game. Kayla Aytes pitched her first game in the 12U division facing three and sitting down all three with strikeouts.
This led them to a 17-7 Victory
