Getting Ready |
|
First of all, it's a game. . .
Think about it. You get to throw heavy object and hit things. Great stress reliever and a chance to be with friends every week.
Joking and playing around
are fine. But when the person who bowls ahead of you gets up to bowl, start thinking about getting ready. This is where you decide if you are going to make any adjustments, rather than up on the lane.
On the approach
As you move up to the ball return, be thinking about what you've decided to do. When you step up onto the approach, it's all bowling for the next 20 or so seconds, not much time out of your fun. Look at your mark and the pocket as you move up to get your ball.
Setting up
Use the fan to dry your hands. Pick up the ball with both hands from the return, then get your towel and wipe the oil off. Put the towel back and move to your starting location before setting your feet and putting your fingers in the ball. At this point, your throwing hand and the ball are dry and you haven't been forcing your fingers to carry the weight of the ball before you throw it.
Before you go
You are set up and have the ball in position, so take a normal breath and let it out to relax yourself while you look at your mark again and visualize the ball moving over your mark and into the pocket. As you see the ball hit the pocket, start your delivery. This is not the time to be deciding where to throw the ball.
Breath, relax, visualize and go.
The delivery
The key to bowling is that you are not consciously guiding the ball to the target. The whole idea of finding the correct mark, the right place to stand, the correct hand position and the correct movements to maintain balance is done ahead of time so you can walk to the line with the ball swinging at the end of your arm and it releases at the correct time to hit the pocket. Everything else has been done.
