New Season, New Team
This year the Heels return just over half the players from last season and have some new talent to showcase.
After a disappointing showing in 2011, the team hopes to rebound and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. This is a tall challenge considering the depth of the NCBA Mid-Atlantic South region. Reigning World Series Champion ECU is ranked preseason #1, and traditional rival NC State is ranked preseason #7.
Still, the Heels feel confident about their chances to visit Columbus in May, and look forward to competing all season.

End of Season Wrap-Up
After an exceptionally disappointing weekend against conference rival NC State, the Heels were officially knocked out of playoff contention. Michael Velten, in his last career start, pitched the game of his life, throwing an 11 inning complete game with 11 K's and only 2 ER. Sadly, the Heels could not put any offense together and lost. The Heels still had a rain delayed series with Elon to wrap the season up, and were swept. It is important to note, however, that the series was during exams, had no implications whatsoever, and only 9 players were on the Tar Heel roster. Thanks for supporting us this year!

The Momentum Continues
The Tar Heels travelled to Wake Forest for a series this weekend. Despite cold weather, the Heels continued with their offensive onslaught winning a mercy-ruled game one, 12 - 1. The second game saw even more offensive production from Tar Heel bats, and was won 17 - 6*. The Sunday game was cancelled (to be rescheduled, possibly) due to heavy rains Saturday night. Elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic South Conference, NC State took at least 2 games from ECU, meaning the Tar Heels will need to win out (including a showdown series sweep of NC State in the last weekend of the regular season) to get to the post-season. A Much Needed Sweep
The Heels came out of their multi-week offensive slump with a vengeance against UNCC this weekend. The bats woke up quickly in Saturday's game (W 14 - 9) and didn't stop there, posting 26 more runs on Sunday (W 11-1, W 15-4).
The games Sunday were both ended after only 5 innings due to the 10 run mercy rule. Most notably, Dillon Cockrell hit a walk-off grand slam to win the first Sunday game. Justin Keever also hit 2 HR's in the 2nd game, after pitching a 1 hitter in the first game.

Two Disappointing Weeks
The Tar Heels have had a couple rough weeks on the road. JMU swept the Heels in 3 poorly played games on the 19th and 20th, while the perennial conference-contender ECU took another 3 this past weekend. While it is early in the season to talk playoff implications, the Heels will likely have to win out to be a serious contender in the Mid-Atlantic South Conference. Up next, the Tar Heels will face UNC-Charlotte at home (Nothern High School in Durham). Check back for (hopefully better) updates!

Coastal Carolina Series
Though losing the first game of the season 14-3, UNC rebounded quickly with a hard fought 5-3 victory the same day, and an equally impressive 9-4 win on Sunday. Unfortunately, due to a mix-up with the UNC Office of the Registrar, the NCBA did not have the team's academic eligibility forms, and UNC was forced to forfeit both wins in the series and has been placed on probation by the league. The score statistics from the first game (CCU 13 UNC 4) will count. The next series will be March 19-20 at James Madison University. STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES!
