The season starts early for UHS wrestling!
On Tuesday, December 4 at 6:30, the UHS Indians meet Pennsbury at home for our first home meet of the 2007-2008 season. Come join us and cheer on the team as they wrestle the 2006-07 #3 team in district 1.
Get Coach Matz’s perspectives and expectation for the coming season in the initial 2007/2008 edition of the Coach’s Clipboard!Follow the link above or the main menu to download your copy.
Also, hoping to see everyone mat side to cheer on the U’s as they take on the District 1 powerhouse, Pennsbury Falcons this Tuesday night at UHS.
Pennsbury was just too strong for the Unionville Indians as they fell 44-18 in the first match of the season. It was a tough step to take early in the season though the team had some bright moments. Zach Lawson (160) started the evening with a hard-fought 10-6 decision. Wins from the Indians also came from Colin Ely (189), Chris Carney (119), Zander Adams (125) and Nick Fischer (145). Strong matches by Joey Bonaduce (130) and Mason Popham (135) and debuts of new members of the Indians' lineup were highlights.
Click on the link above to view the individual box scores. You can read more about the match at the link below for Nate Heckenberger's write up in Wednesday Dec. 5 Daily Local.
As Coach Matz approached his 7th varsity wrestling campaign, he had to have been thinking about what an easy job he had.Nine returning starters, 4 or 5 arguably with the ability to knock on Hershey’s door, add to the mix a PJW State Title holder in Mason Popham and “on paper” the expectations were off the charts.Well, as they say, life can change in a New York minute as varsity starters Grady Stevens, Jacob Popham and Ben Holloway as well as promising newcomer Tony South were all lost to extended injury and maybe the season!
So, heading into the always tough West Chester East Invitational there were a number of holes in the line up and some real questions as to how the Indians would hold up in the face of adversity.Coach Matz’s veteran squad answered the questions and then some as 7 out of a reduced team of 10 wrestlers made the finals. By the time the last whistle blew, the U’s had crowned 5 champions, 2 silver medalists and a 4th place finisher on the way to their 2nd team title in as many years.
Congratulations go out to gold medalist’s Zander Adams (125), Mason Popham (130), Nick Fischer (145), Alex Robillard (152) and Colin Ely (189) as well as some outstanding silver medal performances from Joe Bonaduce (135) and Chris Carney (119); both wrestling state qualifiers in the finals. Nick Tracey also added to the team totals with a 4th place finish.
A specials note of congratulations to Colin Ely as he was awarded Outstanding Wrestlers honors in pinning his way through the tournament!

Lastly, the Indians will have little time to savor this one as they travel south to Maryland to tangle with state champion Rising Sun High School this coming Tuesday night with a 6:00pm start time. The Tigers are led by 2 time state title holder, Matt Jackson and this one promises to be one you don’t want to miss!

Catch Indians in Action - New Photo Albums Added!
Clink on the photo albums link on the main menu to view some great action shots from the recent dual meet with Pennsbury and last weekends West Chester East Invitational Tournament. As always many thanks to Keith Ely for capturing some great moments.
It’s rare that realization
lives-up to expectation but that was exactly what happened at the Rising Sun
Gym last night. The Indians and Tigers
squared off for what appeared, on paper, to be a battle of evenly matched intrastate
rivals.With neither side disappointing and
both teams using the pin as their principle weapon, it was a wire to wire horse
race with a photo finish!
Mason Popham (130 lbs.) and Joe
Bonaduce (135 lbs.) got the U’s out of the gate quickly with a major decision and a quick
pin.It took a highlight performance
from Matt Jackson, Rising Sun’s 2-time State Champion to get the Cats on the board with a
narrow 4-2 win over Nick Fischer. From
there Alex Robillard (152 lbs.) got the Indians back to their winning ways only
to be countered by Dan Cox‘s pin at 160lbs.All told there were 8 matches decided by pin with both teams recording 4
apiece.
It all came down to the final
match and with the U’s needing a pin from Zander Adams (125 lbs.) to take home the
“W”.Having his opponent on his back for
much of the match he was not able to get the tap out and had to settle for a
major decision.
The Indians will be back on the
mat this coming Wednesday evening at home when they host the Vanguard’s from Sun Valley. After
that the Tribe will take a much need holiday break and look to get a number of
wrestlers healthy and back to their winning ways.
Get Coach Matz's perspectives on the Indians start to the '07/'08 season, his expectations and outlook as his wrestlers head into the heart of their schedule. Click on the link above or select "Coach's Clipboard" on the main menu to download your copy.
Wednesday night’s loss to the
Vangard’s closed out a very difficult December and start to the ‘07/’08 wrestling
season for the Indians. From the opening whistle,
it was not the U’s night as Sun
Valley got on the board
early with an unexpected late 3rd period pin at 140lbs and a
decision at 152lbs. It was a hole that the Tribe never climbed out of as Coach
Matz’s wrestlers gave up 5 pins and a forfeit.
Brighter notes came from sophomores
Joe Bonaduce and Zander Adams as well as freshman, Mason Popham closing out the
evening strong with 2 pins and a major decision.
The Indians are looking
forward to a much needed holiday break and will attempt to get some injured
wrestlers back in the line up as they look to turn things around at the Avon
Grove, Devil Duals on January 5th.
Mason Popham, Nick Fischer and Colin Ely were undefeated at Saturday's (Jan 5) Devil Duals. The Unionville Indians placed 5th, out of 12 teams, winning 3 of 5 dual meets. Wins were against Avon Grove, Wyomissing and Oxford. The losses were to Bonner and Lasalle.
The weather wasn't the only thing heating up on Tuesday as the Unionville Indians showed their strength over Octorara with a 48-27 victory. Unionville never gave up its lead and the evening provided several interesting matchups as the team captured its first league win of the season.
Follow the link above for a complete summary of the meet in Nate Heckenberger's write up in the January 9 Daily Local. Catch all the box scores by clicking on the link below.
The Indians on the physical mend and the comeback trail took bronze medal honors at this weekend’s Bill Fretz Duals at PerkiomenValleyHigh School. The U’s battled two-time winner MountUnion and the host PV Vikings to the wire in close matches that could have gone either way.Coach Matz’s crew leveled their records at .500 for the season with solid wins over Upper Dublin, Marple Newtown and Pottsgrove.
Standout performances were delivered by Joe Bonaduce, Mason Popham and Nick Fischer as all recorded perfect 5-0 records for the day.
The U’s are looking to move into the black as they host cross town rival Kennett on Wednesday night and then take the short ride up 202 to Conestoga and the tough 5-Star Duals on Friday evening and Saturday.
Coach Matz discusses some important milestones in UHS Wrestling history in the most recent edition of "The Coach's Clipboard". Follow the link above to download your copy today.
The Blue Daemons started
quickly with a pin at 103, but the Indians got back on track with equal speed courtesy
Evan Brady’s pin at 112 and a forfeit at 119.Kennett’s regional qualifier, Kyle Bove tightened things up a bit with a
major decision at 125 but from there it was all Unionville as the Blue Daemons
were outgunned in the middle weights and the Tribe ran off 5 straight W’s
without an answer from their cross town rivals.
The final tally had the U’s
taking 10 of 14 bouts on the way to their second conference win in as many
tries.
Coach Matz’s wrestlers are
back on the mat this Friday night and Saturday at the Conestoga 5-Star
Challenge.The Indians will face some
stiff competition as they take on District
3 powerhouse Red Lion, Strath Haven and Norristown on Friday night.
Heading to this weekend’s 5
Star Challenge at Conestoga, the Indians mojo appeared to be on the upswing
with an unblemished conference record and going12-4 since getting a
few people back in the line up.Well, a flu bug or
two and some less than inspired wrestling grabbed the air from
the Tribe’s sails as they were 2-5 for the weekend with their only wins coming
at the hands of Strath Haven and WC Henderson.
The bright spots were Mason
Popham, Alex Robillard, Nick Fischer and Colin Ely as all recorded unblemished
7-0 records for their weekends work.
The U’s will be looking to
regroup as they make the final push to the conference title and the post
season.
Unionville is back in action
this Wednesday evening with an all important conference match up with the WC
Rustin, Golden Knights!Hope all make
the short drive up Rt 926 for the 6:30pm start.
Sunday, January 20
Fischer Capturers His 100th!
Congratulations and Kudo’s go to Nick Fischer as his career win count reached 100 after his second match on Friday evening in a winning effort against Strath Haven. After an unblemished 7-0 weekend (24-1 overall this year), his career win total sits at 105 and counting.
Nick is only the second wrestler in Unionville history to reach this lofty plateau; the other being 3 time PIAA qualifier and two time Division II All American, Zack Leather.Needless to say Nick has reached some rarified heights with more to come as his focus turns towards the conference title, the post season and a possible trip to Hershey. WAY TO GO NICK!
Last night’s league match up
between the Indians and the Golden Knights offered a little bit of
everything.There were exciting match ups,
dramatic pins, lead changes and several momentum swings but, when all the wrestling was done and all the accounting
completed; the score stood knotted at 33 with both teams capturing 8 wins. In the end, Rustin grabbed the bonus point
and the "W" by virtue of one additional pin.
Coach Martz’s wrestler’s
will be looking to take the sting out of this one and get ready for the post
season when they return to the mat this Saturday at the Octorara
Invitational.Wrestling is due to get
underway at 9:00am!
At Saturday's Octorara Tournament, 8 school's wrestlers competed for individual titles within their weight classes. Unionvilles's Colin Ely and Nick Fischer captured gold,,each winning all 3 of their matches. They faced tough competition in their final matches, yet dominated their opponents, both from John Carroll High School. Second place finishes came from Chris Carney, Joe Bonaduce and Mason Popham, each also facing tough competition in their final matches. Alex Robillard and Zach Lawson won their final matches in the battle for third place. Dan Connon, Ben Holloway and Kris Walls also won their final match of the day.
The Indians now look ahead to their final home meet of the year on Wednesday, at 6:30 PM, against Oxford. Look for potential strong match ups at 130 - Mason Popham, and 189 - Colin Ely. This is also Senior Recognition night and the team will highlight the contributions and 4 years of wrestling by the seniors - Chris Carney, Colin Ely, Nick Fischer and Ben Holloway. Come join us for a special evening.
Read Coach Matz's comments regarding his four seniors and their unique contributions to the UHS wrestling program. Also, catch his thoughts on tonight's match with the Oxford Hornets in this special Senior Night Edition of the Coach's clipboard!
The evening started with a grand salute to the 4 seniors - Ben Holloway, Colin Ely, Nick Fischer and Chris Carney. Coach Matz highlighted each of their high school wrestling careers, plans for the future and advice to their teammates. The evening only got better with a Unionville victory over Oxford with a score of 45-28. Zach Lawson at 152 had a key pin and Kris Walls sealed the big win with a decision at 285. Nick Fischer, Ben Holloway and Chris Carney also wrestled well for the Indians. Highly anticipated matchups at 130 and 189 were not to be as wrestlers were moved around the line-up.
The team gets a rest from competition this weekend and looks ahead to the meet against rival Great Valley next Wednesday.
The Patriots took the Ches-Mont, American Divsion wrestling title last evening with a definitive, 51-21 win over Unionville. For the details, follow the link below to read Nate Heckenberger's feature article in the Daily Local.

Nick Does Us Proud At Chocolatetown
In arguably the best wrestling state in the country, the PIAA Championships in Hershey showcase some of the finest wrestling talent in the nation. Many Pennsylvania state qualifiers and champions go on to storied college careers that have included numerous NCAA champions, All Americans and Olympians.
So, when Nick Fisher made his 1st trip to the "Big Dance", last week, it would have been easy to get lost in the moment or intimated by the competition. Well, for those that know Nick they are keenly aware that is not in his nature….quit isn’t in his vocabulary! In a very respectable accounting Nick won his 1st match in convincing fashion. He then moved on to two very close losses, narrowly missing medal honors in a heart breaking 3-2 decision.
On behalf of parents, teachers, coaches and the entire UHS student body ….congratulations Nick for a fantastic season and a great run up to Hershey. You certainly did us proud!
