Information on The New PIAA Weight Control Guidelines
Follow the Link above for detailed information on the PIAA new "weight certification" policy!
Once Wrestlers are certified, the PIAA computer program will monitor their weight weekly and only allow a certain percentage of body-fat loss! This new policy makes it tougher for Wrestlers, but safer.
Wrestlers must have clear goals coming into the season and manage their weight correctly. Due to the new ruling, Coach Matz recommends that all wrestlers be within 5 lbs of their desired weight by November 13th(first practice).
Wrestlers are reminded to be certified where they will be most effective in the post-season. They must come into certifications physically fit, close to desired weight (within five lbs.) and sufficiently hydrated (all will be tested)!
If Wrestlers have specific questions, they are encouraged to talk to the Coaches.

The Tiger’s Impress in a 39-24 Clawing of the UHS Indians
It was a night of momentum swings as the Rising Sun Tigers invaded the Unionville gym last night to signal the start of the 06/07 wrestling season for both clubs. Starting at 152lbs., the Tigers pounced early and often reeling off wins in the first 6 matches and building an early 27-0 lead.
Coach Matz’s grapplers appeared to have some early season nerves and a little shock at the Tigers quick start. It took the much anticipated and newest member of the Tribe, freshman Joe Bonaduce, to settle the Indians with an impressive pin at 103 lbs! From there the wheel house of the Indians line-up took over as the U’s battled their way back wining the next 5 bouts. The run culminated with Nick Fischer’s hard fought 3-0 win that brought the Indians within 3 point of leveling the match.
But …the Tiger had a wheel house answer of their own with 2 Maryland State Qualifiers and Matt Jackson, a Maryland State Champion wrestling in the last three bouts of the evening. The Tigers ran the table spoiling the Indians home opener which included the christening of a much needed new wrestling mat.
Click on the link above to view the individual box scores! Coach Matz will attempt to get his grapplers back to hunting W’s this Saturday as both the JV’s and Varsity compete in West Chester East’s Viking Invitational.
Visit the albums section of the web site in a few days to view photo’s of last night’s action.

Bonaduce Is Brilliant As The Indians Capture The WC East Invitational
The great thing about wrestling is that every season is a new beginning…a fresh start if you would …..where everything is possible. And so it is with 2006/07 edition of UHS Indians Wrestling. Great promise…exciting potential…high expectation! So, when the Tribe stubbed a toe in their opener against a Rising Sun … the faithful all held their collective breath for a moment. Did they warrant the preseason hype….was this a premonition or just early season jitters and a less than full lineup? Well Coach Matz and his young grapplers answered any doubts from fans and potential foes with a stunning Team Victory in this past weekend’s West Chester East Invitational. In a tough field of 12 area schools, the Indians dominated with three Individual Champions (Joe Bonaduce @103, Ethan Bunting @ 119 and Anthony DiMarco @ 160) plus three silver medalists (Chris Carney @ 112, Nick Fischer @ 130 and Jesse Picard @ 140). The U’s also added a Bronze medalist with Andrew Smith @ 125. In the highlight final of the tournament, Unionville freshman, Joe Bonaduce captured Outstanding Wrestler Honors and firmly announced his arrival onto the District 1 wrestling scène with a brilliant 9-6 win over the District’s Pre-season # 2 and last years State Medalist, Seth Ecker from Pottstown.
The U’s look to continue to build on this success as they travel to Rustin for a Wed night tangle with the Golden Knights. The following evening they travel a few miles further up 202 to hook up with perennial D1 powerhouse, Conestoga. Please come out and show your support!

The Indians War Party Raids The Pioneers For A 35-22 Win!
It’s been ten long years since Unionville last tasted victory over Conestoga in wrestling. During that time, the perennial District 1 South power has pretty much had their way with the Indians. So when Unionville entered the Pioneers gym last night, the home town crowd was expecting business as usual. As Conestoga and a number of teams in the District have or will soon discover there is no business as usual with this club!
In a gritty performance from top to bottom, the Indians battled Conestoga from the outset with Sr. Captain Andrew Smith putting Unionville on the board 1st with a 12-4 major decision. The Pioneers struck back quickly as State Qualifier, Jack Chidester pinned to put the home team in front 6-3. However the Unionville Coaches performed a “take down” of their own when they bumped Nick Fischer and their next three wrestlers (Alex Robillard, Jesse Picard and Grady Stevens) up a weight class to take advantage of the match ups. The strategy worked to perfection as Fischer pinned at 135 and the Indians won four of the next five bouts in building a 20-9 cushion. From there the match swung back and forth until Joe Bonaduce pinned and Chris Carney and Ethan Bunting closed the door with hard fought decisions.
The win over Conestoga completed a two day virtuoso performance by the U’s as they had impressed in a 63 -15 win over W.C. Rustin the night prior. Coach Matz travels his Indians to Sun Valley, next Tuesday evening for a dual meet with the Vanguards. Your support would be welcomed.

The Indians “Bump Up” to Handle Sun Valley, 35-25
They say the TEST for any good team is to find a way to win when you’re not at your best!
So when Coach Matz’s grapplers entered the Vanguards gym on Tuesday evening, it must have felt like they were walking into the SAT's with a broken #2 pencil and a busted calculator. Injury and illness caused the U’s to forfeit three weight classes (-18 pts) and cover a 4th by “bumping up” FIVE wrestlers to face heavier Sun Valley opponents.
Alex Robillard, wrestling up at 140lbs, set the tone for the evening with a hard fought 6-5 decision. However, after a dramatic pin by Grady Stevens at 145lbs, the forfeits began to mount. Jake Popham, Ben Holloway and a newcomer to the varsity lineup, freshman, Zander Adams all tallied victories to keep the Indians within striking distance but, when Chris Carney got to the mat for the 119 lb. bout he was staring down a heavier SV opponent and a 22-25 deficit! Carney delivered a gritty 11-5 decision to level the match at 25 all. From there the Captains (Ethan Bunting, Andrew Smith and Nick Fischer) also wrestling up, took control to close the door on the Vanguards and provide the U’s with a passing grade of “W”.
After a well deserved Holiday mini-break, Coach Matz’s squad swings back into action on Wed, the 27th at the Trojan Invitational in Pottstown.
We look forward to seeing everyone matside as the Indians attempt to build on their early season success.

The Indians Impress withTournament Win #2 at Pottstown!
There’s no question that the Unionville Indians came into Pottstown’s Trojan Invitational on a wrestling high & expecting to take home some hardware. However, no one could have predicted the magnitude of the U’s victory. With five schools competing in a dual meet format, the Indians crowned individual champions in 7 of 14 weight classes and the team went undefeated to take home the Champions trophy for their third consecutive year.
Highlights included; Chris Carney’s triumphant excursion up to the 125 weight class, winning 2nd place and Nick Fisher snatching Outstanding Wrestler honors. Up and down the line up Coach Matz’s gladiators appeared confident and looking to sharpen their skills, instead of settling for easy pins. Follow the link above for all the results. Also, check out the Photo's section for some great shots from Pottstown and the recent win at Sun Valley.
The Indians return to action at home next Thursday, the 4th to face Great Valley, currently ranked #6 in D1 and the pre-season favorite to win the SCCL. It is sure to be a barnburner as arguably the two most impactful teams in the league grapple for the early lead in the chase for the title.
Everyone in the UHS Wrestling Community is asked to turn out and bring your Indians pride!

Defense mechanism: Great Valley opens bid for SCCL repeat with win over Unionville
By: NATE HECKENBERGER Special to the Local News
01/05/2007
UNIONVILLE -- With a gym thick with tension and a lineup full of good matchups, it seemed fitting that Great Valley secured victory thanks to a grappler who didn't even wrestle the past two seasons.

Indians Get Back On Track with a Strong 2nd Place Finish at the Devil Duals
Over the weekend, the Indians took some of the sting out of the recent loss to Great Valley placing a very respectable second at the 12-Team Devil Duals at Avon Grove High School.
Coach Matz’s grapplers impressed with wins over Glen Mills (59-13), Coatesville (60-16), Wilson (50-24) and LaSalle (34-30).
In the Championship Match, the Tribe took current D1 #9 ranked Springfield-Delco to the wire (even with a few starters out of the line up) before surrendering 33-30. The result continues to underscore the U’s consideration at one of the Districts Top 10 programs.

Out With the Old and In With the New as the Indians Defeat Oxford, 32-31
The dictionary defines Tradition as; "a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting". Well, when it comes to wrestling, Unionville has had a tradition of getting beaten by the Oxford Hornets. It has been 8 long years since the Indians tasted victory over the Maroon and White.
So when Coach Matz and his Grapplers entered the beautiful new and spacious Oxford Area High School Gymnasium for the 1st time on Wednesday night, they did so with the goal of starting a new tradition to go along with the new surroundings.
The match kicked off at 160lbs and in spite of a solid performance from Colin Ely at 171 lbs, by the time the heavier weights were through the U’s found themselves in a very traditional 19-6 hole and there was nothing new about the way they were feeling.
That’s when the Tribe’s freshman sensation, Joey Bonaduce stepped onto the mat to face a very tough opponent in Oxford's Cory Brennan at 103 lbs.. Joe had no interest in a history lesson or old traditions as he decked Brennan sparking an Indians rally that saw the U’s win 5 of the next 6 bouts. The rally included a win by Zander Adams at 112 and because of an injury to Jesse Picard, Chris Carney, Ethan Bunting, Andrew Smith and Alex Robillard all wrestled up a weight class while securing wins and building a 32-22 bulge for the Tribe.
There were more than a few anxious moments in the last two bouts of the night but, a very determined Grady Stevens, wrestling with a severely sprained ankle, fought off his back to not give up a pin, to secure Unionville's long awaited victory and quite possibly that New Tradition Coach Matz is looking for.
The U’s are back at work this weekend when they compete in the Bill Fretz Duals at Perkiomen Valley High School. Check the away locations off the main menu for directions….hope to see you matside!

The Tribe Grabs 2nd Place Honors at the Bill Fretz Duals
UHS Grapplers had another strong weekend performance with a 2nd place finish in the Bill Fretz Duals at Perkiomen Valley High School. The U’s bowed to a tough Mt. Union team from District 6 in the championship final, 34-27.
Prior to their narrow loss, the Indians were most impressive in their march to the finals dispatching of long time SCCL rival Avon Grove (49-12), Academy Park (62-15), Marple Newtown (67-12) and the host Perkiomen Valley Vikings (55-12) along the way.
The nicked-up Varsity line up will enjoy a much needed and well deserved week off before returning to the mat this Saturday for the always tough Kennett Invitational at Kennett High School. Wrestling is expected get underway at 9:00am.
Come out and support your Indians!

Unionville Rules at the Kennett Invitational
It was a dominating performance as the Unionville Indians captured their 3rd tournament team title of the season at Saturday’s Kennett Invitational. The Tribe placed 11 wrestlers in the Championship round with the finals taking on the look of a dual meet tournament.
In the highlight match of the afternoon, Unionville Sr. Captain, Andrew Smith upset District 1, # 3 ranked, Eric Daniels from Pottstown, 9-7 in a match that saw several lead changes and came down to the final seconds.
When the final whistle had blown, the U’s crowned 7 champions (Joe Bonaduce-103, Andrew Smith-125, Nick Fischer-130, Alex Robillard-135, Jesse Picard-140, Anthony DiMarco-160 and Colin Ely-171). In addition, there were 4 members of Coach Matz’s crew who took home sliver medal honors (Zander Adams-112, Ethan Bunting-119, Jake Popham-189 and Ben Holloway-215).
The coaching staff is expecting these results to set the tone for a very busy wrestling week ahead as the Indians return to Reynolds Gymnasium on Wed night for their league match up with Kennett as well as facing a stern test at this coming weekends Octorara Invitational Tournament.
The Indians are also hoping to squeeze in a trip to their 1st ever District Duals. If chosen, the U’s will also be in action on Thursday evening against a to be named opponent up at Council Rock South or Pottstown. Please check back here on Monday evening for more information.

The Patriots Show Unionville an Early Exit at the District Duals, 39-16
It was a full house at Pottstown High School last night for round one of the annual District Team Championships. All the usual D1 wrestling powerhouses were present and accounted for. The newcomer to the ball was the Unionville Indians and along with their invitation came dreams of a shot at entry into the State Team Championship in Hershey. Unfortunately, the Great Valley Patriots came to the dance with a few dreams of their own as they had answers to all of the questions the U’s posed from the onset.
Just as in their league dual meet, the match played to the Patriots strength starting in the middle weights (130lbs) and wining the coin toss. The Indians were never able to mount any serious challenge, as Great Valley reeled off wins in 8 of the first 10 weight classes contested.
Coach Matz’ wrestlers will be back on the mat and looking one more time to even the score with Great Valley as both teams are headed to this weekends Tournament at Octorara High School.

Unionville Wrestlers Capture 2nd Place Honors at Octorara
The Indians captured 4 championship medals; Joe Bonaduce (103), Chris Carney (112), Nick Fischer (130) and Anthony DiMarco (160) on there way to a strong second place finish at this weekends round-robin tournament at Octorara Area High School. In addition, to our Champions, Coach Matz’ Grapplers took home silver medals with Ethan Bunting (119) and Alex Robillard (135) as well as 3rd place honors were awarded to Jesse Picard (140) and Grady Stevens (145).
The U’s will look to tighten their hold on 2nd place in the SCCL standings as they host Octorara for Senior Recognition Night in a dual meet this Wed, the 31st . Things are expected to get underway at 6:30pm.
So come out and help us celebrate the many accomplishments of our talented Senior Class; Lexi Crampton (Mgr.), Catherine Funari (Mgr.), Ethan Bunting, Andrew Smith, Jesse Picard, DJ Letier, Nick Bracciante, Bryan Stevens and Anthony DiMarco. See you mat side!

Seniors Shine as the Indians Thrash Octorara, 53-16
It was a night to recognize and honor the many accomplishments of Unionville’s Senior Managers and Wrestlers as well as their Parents. The class of 2007; Lexi Crampton (Mgr.), Catherine Funari (Mgr.), Ethan Bunting, Andrew Smith, Jesse Picard, DJ Letier, Nick Bracciante, Bryan Stevens and Anthony DiMarco will all be fondly missed next year.
In fitting form, all seniors in the line up won their matches over their Octorara opponents on the way to an impressive Indians victory.
Coach Matz will attempt to get his U's healthy and tuned up for the post season with dual meets at Garnet Valley on Thursday evening and a Saturday morning clash at Coatesville.

The Indians End The Regular Season on a High Note!
Coach Matz’s wrestlers closed out their regular season with two dominating wins this past week over Garnet Valley (42-20) and Coatesville (69-9). The win over the GV Jaguars assured the U’s sole position of second place in this the final season of SCCL. In addition, the Indians will finish the year ranked # 3 in Southern Chester County behind Downingtown West and Great Valley and # 9 overall in District One.
While the Tribe has achieved a number of the team goals they had set for themselves at the start of the season, there is still plenty of wrestling ahead as the Indians head into the post season and travel the road to Hershey and the State Championships. The battle toughened U’s will take the 1st steps in that journey at the Section 4 tournament this Saturday at Great Valley High School.
As is usually the case, success brings with it heighten expectations of even more success. And so it with this team; they will compete in arguably one of the toughest Sections in the District but Coach Matz and his staff have some lofty expectations that this group will be wrestling for several weeks to come.

Unionville Takes 5th Place Honors at the Section IV Tournament
It’s often said, that making it out of the sectional tournament is a more difficult challange than surviving district’s and getting to regional's. This year, in arguably the toughest section in District 1, with 5 of the District’s top 10 teams represented that statement never seemed truer.
Coach Matz’s U’s knew it would be a challenging day but with solid performances up and down the lineup the Indians exited this gauntlet with 7 wrestlers moving on to next weeks District Tournament at Spring Ford. Congratulations go out to silver medalists Joe Bonaduce(103) and Nick Fischer(130), Bronze medalists Jacob Popham (189) and Ben Holloway (215) and 4th place finishers Andrew Smith(125), Anthony DiMarco (160) and Colin Ely(171). As a team, the Tribe finished in a very respectable 5th place, only 0.5 points behind Spring Ford.

Three Indians Advance to Regionals
At the beginning of the season the Coaching Staff certainly had some elevated expectations for the 2006/2007 edition of Indians wrestling. Coach’s Matz and Szewczyk were looking for 25 Dual Meet wins; they expected 8 wrestlers to make it Districts, with 4 advancing to Regionals and at least one wrestler heading on to the States Tournament in Hershey.
Well this group of young men continue to step high over that raised bar of expectation. The Tribe ended year with 25 Dual Meet wins (25-5) with 7 wrestlers competing in last weekends District Tournament at Spring-Fords High School. UHS placed 8th out of 20 schools and narrowly missed that goal of 4 with 3 U’s headed on to the Regional Tournament this coming weekend at Norristown.
Congratulations go out to Nick Fischer (130), Joe Bonaduce (103) and Andrew Smith (125) as they battled with the District elite and placed 2nd, 3rd & 4th in their respective weight classes. Honorable mention also goes out to Jacob Popham (189) who narrowly missed filling that 4th spot with a 5th place overall finish.
With one more ticket to punch on an already outstanding season, the Tribe will look to have multiple wrestlers take the trip to Chocolate town for the 1st time in school history.

The Coaching Staff recognized the achievements of an outstanding senior class, our district & regional qualifiers as well as the entire team.
As we put the wraps on this edition of Indians wrestling, special thanks go out to the entire UHS Team, the Coaches, Managers and all the fans for your support!
