Three members of the U14 Boys team traveled to St. Joseph’s University to interview three current Varsity Soccer stars and UDSC alumni on October 5, 2008. Captain Michael McInaw (Senior), Andrew Tursi (Senior) and Travis Gast (Junior) shared their memories of UDSC soccer as well experiences with future Hawks - Tim Chwal, Michael Connelly and Kyle Purvis. We began our questions with the team’s chances in the A-10 this year. Andrew Tursi (UDHS ’05) believes the team will have a “huge impact” on the Atlantic 10 conference this year and likes their chances to go far due to a “favorable schedule”. He also stated the team has a good group of guys that work hard and play well together. Travis Gast (UDHS ’06) is excited about playing with his friends and teammates who have been together since the second and third grade and is equally excited about the season. When we asked who was their favorite UDSC coach, the answer was simple, Michael’s father, former Temple University coach and current Assistant Coach for St. Joseph’s, Hugh McInaw. Andrew equates Hugh to a second Father who has encouraged and coached the boys all through UDSC soccer. When Michael was asked what it was like to have his father coach him, he smiled and said he liked his laidback style and knowledge of the game. Travis enthusiastically added that he credits a lot of his soccer success to Hugh. We asked each player to provide us with a college highlight moment. Travis immediately smiled and turned to his friends expecting them to remember. When none did, Travis described a 70 yard run against Drexel; received a cross and headed the ball in the goal. Andrew cited his seven goals that he scored his freshman year. Michael had to think a little bit longer and his teammate reminded him of a goal scored his freshman year on a direct kick. Michael explained that he went up for the ball and the goalie punched him in the face but he still was able to head the ball in for a goal. Kyle Purvis was curious to know about their Favorite Professional player and their favorite professional team: Andrew - Adrian Muto – Florentine Travis - Mark Messy - Liverpool Michael - Stephen Girard - Celtic We asked the three St. Joe’s stars what advice they would give to UDSC players. Michael advised to work hard and be in shape. Andrew encouraged the boys to play many sports in addition to soccer to avoid burnout and stay fresh on the field. Travis concluded with advice on how important it was to learn the strategy of the game. He stated soccer was as much a mental game and that being smart, understanding the nuisances and knowing where to go on the field is important for success. We finally asked the trio what happens after life at St. Joseph’s. Andrew, a Pharmaceutical Marketing major, has been hurt this season and hopes to be healthy to lead the team to the A-10 playoffs. He would love to be involved in the sport either through playing or coaching. Michael, a Finance major, is the quiet leader of the group. He quietly listens to his friends and teammates and agrees that soccer is in his blood and will not end after graduation. Travis, a Philosophy major, hopes to possibly prolong his career at the next level. He would even consider playing in Europe. He also plans to coach, play or referee. Please come out to support Michael, Andrew and Travis as they challenge the Temple Owls on October 25, 2008 at Temple’s Ambler
